On the occasion of this year’s journey, I extend my heartiest wishes to all of you, the devotees of Shiva.”He described the Amarnath Yatra as one of the most enduring symbols of India’s spiritual heritage and cultural unity.”This pilgrimage to seek the blessings of Baba Amarnath is an eternal chapter in India’s tradition of spiritual journeys. Every year, lakhs of devotees from across the world who follow Sanatan culture reach Jammu and Kashmir to participate in this pilgrimage. People coming from different regions, speaking different languages, and practising diverse traditions complete this journey with a shared resolve to seek the blessings of Mahadev,” he said.PM thanks security forces, administration and volunteersThe Prime Minister also acknowledged the efforts of thousands of personnel working behind the scenes to ensure the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage.He thanked the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Security Force (BSF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), healthcare workers, civil administration, sanitation workers and volunteers for their contribution.”During these two months, a wonderful manifestation of ‘Unity in Diversity’ of India is witnessed at the sacred abode of Baba Barfani,” he said.Five ‘Sankalps’ for pilgrimsIn his letter, PM Modi urged devotees to observe five resolutions during this year’s pilgrimage.The first was maintaining cleanliness throughout the journey.”First Resolve: Let us follow the rules of cleanliness during the Amarnath Yatra…”The second focused on following official instructions and safety guidelines.”Second Resolve: Let us follow all orders of the administration, traffic rules, and safety directives with complete dedication.”PM Modi also advised pilgrims to remain cautious while travelling through mountainous terrain, particularly in view of slippery paths and changing weather conditions.Another key appeal was to support the local economy under the Centre’s “Vocal for Local” initiative.”With the spirit of ‘Vocal for Local’, let us spend at least 10 percent of our travel expenses on purchasing local products. This will provide a boost to the livelihood of the families and youth of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.PM Modi also encouraged devotees to participate in the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign by gifting a sapling after completing the pilgrimage, which concludes on Raksha Bandhan.Concluding his message, the Prime Minister urged pilgrims to carry the values of the Yatra into their daily lives.”With the sentiment of ‘Nation First’, let us honestly fulfill our duties throughout the year and make an active contribution toward building a ‘Viksit Bharat’.”He later reiterated the message on social media, saying the Amarnath Yatra remains an eternal symbol of India’s spiritual traditions and cultural unity and expressed hope that the pilgrimage would be safe and auspicious for all devotees.Second batch leaves Jammu under tight securityPM Modi’s message coincided with the departure of the second batch of pilgrims from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on Friday morning.Authorities deployed a full security cover for the convoy as pilgrims began their journey towards the holy cave shrine.The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board’s Yatri Niwas at Chanderkote in Ramban district was illuminated with tricolour lights to welcome pilgrims.Several devotees praised the arrangements made by the administration.”The arrangements here are very good. I am grateful for the arrangements of the Indian government. The Yatri Niwas, illuminated with tricolour lights, is grand and full of facilities. The pilgrims are not facing any difficulty,” a pilgrim from Rajasthan said.The Ramban district administration has also put in place round-the-clock sanitation and cleanliness measures to ensure hygienic conditions at transit facilities.A day earlier, Jammu and Kashmir lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch of over 4,800 pilgrims from Bhagwati Nagar in a convoy of 259 vehicles.”Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is a sacred path where devotion meets spiritual awakening. May this holy pilgrimage bring immense joy and divine peace to all,” Sinha had said.Technology-driven security shield along pilgrimage routesThis year’s Yatra is taking place under one of the most extensive security deployments in recent years.The Indian Army, working alongside the CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies, has established a technology-driven aerial security network across both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes.The security grid includes the Integrated Drone Detection and Interceptor System (IDDIS), deployed again after its successful use during last year’s pilgrimage. The system combines electronic jamming capabilities with laser-based interception to detect and neutralise hostile drones.The Army has also deployed the Low Level Lightweight Radar (LLLR) for the first time during the Amarnath Yatra. Designed to detect low-flying aerial threats, including drones, the radar can identify targets at distances ranging from 20 to 50 kilometres.L-70 and ZU anti-aircraft guns have been positioned at key locations to provide close-range air defence, while surveillance drones operated by various security agencies are conducting regular sorties over nearly 100 transit camps established along the pilgrimage routes.The enhanced deployment follows a comprehensive review of security arrangements after last year’s terror attack on tourists in the Pahalgam region and reflects heightened efforts to safeguard one of India’s largest annual religious pilgrimages.The 2026 Amarnath Yatra will continue until August 28, with devotees travelling to the holy cave shrine through the traditional 48-km Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district.Get the latest India news and live updates. May this holy pilgrimage bring immense joy and divine peace to all,” Sinha had said.Technology-driven security shield along pilgrimage routesThis year’s Yatra is taking place under one of the most extensive security deployments in recent years.The Indian Army, working alongside the CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies, has established a technology-driven aerial security network across both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes.The security grid includes the Integrated Drone Detection and Interceptor System (IDDIS), deployed again after its successful use during last year’s pilgrimage. The system combines electronic jamming capabilities with laser-based interception to detect and neutralise hostile drones.The Army has also deployed the Low Level Lightweight Radar (LLLR) for the first time during the Amarnath Yatra. BENGALURU: Artificial Intelligence has helped scientists unlock a century of the Sun’s history by analysing hand-drawn observations from the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, turning fragile paper records into a valuable digital archive that could improve understanding of long-term solar activity and future space weather.In a study published in The Astrophysical Journal, researchers led by Dibya Kirti Mishra of the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (Aries) along with the collaborators from Isro’s Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, USA and Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), used machine learning to analyse daily solar drawings made at the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KoSO) between 1916 and 2007.The work demonstrates how historical observations, once considered difficult to analyse systematically, can now be transformed into reliable scientific data. Aries and IIA are autonomous institutes of the department of science and technology (DST).For more than a century, scientists have studied the Sun’s magnetic activity, which waxes and wanes in roughly 11-year cycles. These cycles drive sunspots, solar flares and eruptions that can interfere with satellites, navigation systems, radio communications and power grids on Earth. While modern telescopes provide precise digital observations, records from earlier decades are often incomplete or inconsistent, making it difficult to understand how the Sun has behaved over long periods.KoSO, one of the world’s oldest solar observatories, has maintained an exceptional archive of daily “suncharts” from 1904 to 2022. “Before digital imaging became commonplace, astronomers carefully sketched features such as sunspots, plages, filaments and prominences onto standard grids. Although scientifically valuable, differences in drawing styles, ageing paper and varying scan quality have made these records challenging to analyse using conventional methods,” DST said.To overcome these hurdles, researchers employed a supervised machine learning model known as “U-Net”. The system first identified the Sun’s disc in each scanned drawing, accurately determining its centre, size and orientation. It then detected and mapped bright magnetic regions known as plages across nine solar cycles spanning 1916 to 2007.Plages are bright patches in the Sun’s atmosphere associated with strong magnetic fields. Because they closely reflect the Sun’s magnetic activity, scientists regard them as one of the most reliable indicators of long-term changes. Extracting them from historical records helps bridge the gap between early observations and the continuous measurements available in the space age.The AI-generated data allowed the team to construct a classic “butterfly diagram”, which shows how solar activity migrates from higher latitudes towards the equator during each solar cycle. “They also found that the plage areas identified from the drawings closely matched measurements obtained from KoSO’s Ca II K full-disc images, confirming that the century-old sketches provide dependable scientific information,” DST said.Researchers say such long-term records are essential for comparing the strength and structure of different solar cycles, reconstructing past changes in the Sun’s magnetic influence and improving models of long-term space weather.Get the latest India news and live updates. The entire regular teaching staff of two Delhi govt schools – one at Bhalswa and another near GTB Nagar – has been deployed for booth-level officer (BLO) duties during the peak period of the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, citing manpower requirements for data handling, administrative work and BLO-related responsibilities, a school official said.According to the official, the Bhalswa school has around 1,200 students and approximately 20 regular teachers, all of whom have been assigned SIR work, leaving only 15 guest teachers to conduct classes across 22 sections.’Election duties important, but they shouldn’t come at cost of education’In the school near GTB Nagar, the official said 22 teachers have been put on BLO duty and asked how the entire regular teaching staff can be picked up for non-academic work.”It will be very difficult to teach students till Oct. Academic loss is inevitable,” the school official said.TOI reached out to the principals of both schools but received no response.Educators said the large-scale deployment could significantly disrupt classroom teaching, forcing students to bear the brunt of the staff’s absence. They argued that election-related assignments should be distributed more evenly across schools so that no single institution loses a substantial portion of its teaching staff.”If teachers have to be deployed, authorities should take a maximum of two teachers from a school. Many schools have not been asked to send even one teacher. The deployment should be distributed equally so that both election work and school education can continue,” the official argued.TOI accessed an office order for manpower requirement pertaining to nine teachers of the Bhalswa school, signed by the sub-divisional magistrate/electoral registration officer (SDM/ERO) of Badli. It states that volunteers may be required to perform full-time election duties at Voter Centres or ERO offices, including data entry, form scrutiny, clerical work and BLO-related tasks under SIR, even after normal office hours or under specific instructions, if directed by the Election Commission. Their responsibilities include verifying Forms 6 and 8, assisting in the preparation of the draft electoral roll and any other election-related work assigned by the ERO or AERO.The order added that any negligence, delay, absence or non-compliance of instructions in connection with SIR 2026 shall be viewed seriously and action shall be taken as per applicable rules.On his part, Delhi education minister Ashish Sood said govt will ensure that neither the SIR exercise nor students’ education suffer. “If by chance such anomalies have come up in some schools, we will rectify them. We have stated that teachers will be paid for election work so that they get relief and the process goes on smoothly. Even after that, if we find any problems in the system, we will work towards improving these.”Calling the SIR exercise a national responsibility, he added, “We will also take into consideration the representation sent by the govt schoolteachers and address their concerns. Education will not suffer.”Earlier in the week, Govt School Teachers’ Association (GSTA) had written to the Delhi govt stating that the prolonged deployment of teachers for election work would leave schools short-staffed during a crucial academic period. “A substantial number of trained teachers have been deployed as BLOs and BLO supervisors for the SIR exercise. Consequently, the absence of thousands of teachers from schools is likely to adversely affect the education of lakhs of students. Such academic loss cannot be adequately compensated at a later stage,” general secretary Ajay Veer Yadav wrote in the letter.The association had urged the Delhi govt to immediately appoint guest teachers against vacancies created by SIR duties to ensure regular classes continue uninterrupted, particularly for students of Classes X and XII preparing for board examinations. According to the association, the election-related assignments are expected to continue till Oct 7, making it difficult for schools to make up for the resulting academic loss later.Education activist and lawyer Ashok Agarwal said the large-scale deployment of teachers for election work had been a long-standing concern and had previously been challenged in court, though existing rules continue to permit it. “Election duties are important but these should not come at the cost of children’s education. If teachers have to be deployed, the burden should be shared across schools,” he said.Teachers say lesson planning becomes difficult when schedules are unpredictable and many teachers admit to feeling a sense of guilt about the impact on their students, even when these decisions are beyond their control.
