NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday accused the BJP of attempting to mislead women voters and warned them against sharing bank details, alleging it could lead to financial fraud.Addressing a public rally, Banerjee claimed that BJP workers may approach households posing as representatives of the West Bengal or Trinamool Congress (TMC) government and ask for bank account details under the pretext of providing financial benefits.“Mothers and sisters, stay alert, the BJP people will come to your homes in the name of the West Bengal government, in the name of the TMC government, and ask for your bank account number, saying they’ll give you money. Don’t give them your account number, even by mistake; they’ll take away the money from your Lakshmi Bhandar. This is their trick,” she said.She has repeatedly highlighted the state government’s Lakshmi Bhandar scheme, claiming it has benefited women, and cautioning voters against BJP promises. She earlier said, “Women have benefited. BJP will give some money before the polls, but close it after.” The scheme was rolled out in 2021 to provide financial assistance to women from economically weaker sections of society. Under the scheme women of age between 25 to 60 years are provided Rs 1,200 every month to women SC/ST households and Rs 1,000 per month to other beneficiaries are provided.The chief minister also criticised the Congress, alleging a lack of coordination on electoral issues.“We had told the Congress several times that we should go to the Election Commission together to protest, but you didn’t go. Today, you’ll field candidates and win elections, but you won’t stand with the people in their difficult times,” she said.Banerjee further alleged that large sums of money is being circulated during elections, urging voters to remain vigilant.Earlier, the CM in an election rally in Purulia, had alleged that if BJP would interfere with Bengal’s food culture, including consumption of fish and meat, if voted to power.Addressing the gathering, she had said, “BJP says can’t eat fish, meat, eggs; they don’t believe in any religion; they resort to riots; Adivasis are exploited, women attacked in BJP-ruled states.”Her remarks align with the TMC’s campaign narrative portraying the BJP as disconnected from Bengal’s cultural practices.Escalating her criticism, Banerjee also targeted the BJP leadership, referring to Union home minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks. “A big BJP leader has unleashed his ‘chargesheet’ against TMC; a ‘chargesheet’ should be filed against them. NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader K Annamalai on Saturday clarified that he was not denied a ticket for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, stating that he himself had chosen not to contest and would instead focus on campaigning for the party and its allies.”I had already informed the core committee in writing that I would not be contesting in any constituency. Therefore, it is not that I was denied a ticket the truth is that I chose not to contest the election,” Annamalai told reporters at Chennai airport. The clarification comes a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its first list of 27 candidates for the April 23 assembly polls, with Annamalai’s absence drawing attention across political circles. Annamalai said he would take on a broader organisational role during the elections while campaigning for BJP across multiple states.”… In this election, my role is to campaign for candidates across Tamil Nadu. Right now, the party has given me the responsibility to campaign in Puducherry and Kerala till the 7th (April). From the 7th to the 23rd, I have to campaign for all BJP and NDA candidates across Tamil Nadu. That is the responsibility given by the party to me. I’ll be fulfilling that responsibility,” he said.He also expressed gratitude to the party leadership for accepting his decision.”When I did not express any interest in contesting, how could the leadership allocate me a ticket? If I had decided to contest, it wouldn’t have mattered which constituency I could have contested from anywhere. I am grateful to the BJP leadership for respecting my decision and giving me the opportunity to campaign in support of the NDA alliance candidates,” he added.However, there were reports that Annamalai had conveyed to the party national leadership his “extreme” displeasure over the constituencies allocated for the national party by the AIADMK.Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran termed Annamalai’s absence from candidate list a leadership call.”This is a decision from the high command…,” Nagendran said, expressing confidence in the party’s candidates. “All the 27 candidates will surely win this time.”Despite not contesting, Annamalai remains central to the BJP’s campaign strategy. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya said his popularity would benefit the party across the state.”Annamalai is the most popular leader of the BJP, not just in Tamil Nadu, but he commands a large following all over the country. He has been given the responsibility of campaigning for all the candidates in Tamil Nadu. I am extremely confident that Annamalai’s popularity and his campaign all across Tamil Nadu will translate into victory for the BJP candidates all across the state,” Surya said.The BJP’s candidate list includes senior leaders such as Tamilisai Soundararajan from Mylapore, Vanathi Srinivasan from Coimbatore North, and Union minister L Murugan from Avinashi.Annamalai, a former IPS officer known as “Singham”, had earlier served as the Tamil Nadu BJP president before being replaced by Nagendran. He played a key role in expanding the party’s presence in the state and led outreach initiatives such as the “En Mann, En Makkal” yatra.The BJP is contesting the elections as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led in the state by the AIADMK. Under the alliance arrangement, the AIADMK will contest 169 of the 234 seats, while the BJP will contest 27 seats alongside other allies.Tamil Nadu will go to polls in a single phase on April 23, with counting scheduled for May 4. The main contest is expected between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the NDA, with actor-turned-politician Vijay also entering the fray.Why the move may work for BJPAnnamalai is freed from constituency-level responsibilities, allowing him to campaign extensively across multiple regions. His role as a star campaigner strengthens BJP’s outreach across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.This also helps BJP to push for a stable alliance with AIADMK. It allowed the party to project a unified command and avoid internal contradictions during elections.What might go against BJPAnnamalai’s absence from the ballot could demoralise grassroots workers who viewed him as a key leader. BJP risks weakening its independent “third force” narrative in Tamil Nadu politics.His aggressive campaign style, which attracted younger voters, may not fully translate without him contesting. The move may create confusion among voters regarding the party’s leadership direction in the state.It could be perceived as BJP conceding space to AIADMK within the alliance structure. In Puducherry’s assembly elections, attention is turning not just to the political fight, but also to the wealth of the candidates. Many of those contesting are “crorepatis,” with some declaring very high personal assets, making finances a key talking point in the polls.Out of the 291 candidates analysed by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), as many as 119, or 41%, have declared assets exceeding Rs 1 crore, underlining the growing presence of wealth in electoral politics. The total declared assets of all candidates stand at Rs 2,099 crore, with an average of Rs 7.21 crore per candidate. Party-wise trends also highlight the concentration of wealth. Among major parties, all 16 candidates from the All India NR Congress and all 10 BJP candidates analysed are crorepatis. Similarly, 11 out of 12 DMK candidates and 17 out of 21 Congress candidates have declared assets above Rs 1 crore.The analysis also shows that wealth among candidates has increased compared to previous elections. In 2021, only 23% of candidates were crorepatis, a figure that has now risen to 41% in 2026.Richest candidatesAt the very top of the wealth ladder is Jose Charles Martin, contesting from Kamaraj Nagar. Martin, who founded the Latchiya Jananayaka Katchi (LJK), has total declared assets amounting to Rs 6,09,09,25,584. His wealth includes movable assets worth Rs 3,39,34,93,484 and immovable assets valued at Rs 2,69,74,32,100.He is followed by Puducherry BJP president VP Ramalingam from Raj Bhavan constituency, who has declared assets worth Rs 1,15,62,29,179. Home minister A Namassivayam, also from the BJP and contesting from Mannadipet, ranks third with assets totalling Rs 85,46,14,473. Beyond the top three, several other candidates also feature prominently among the wealthiest. G Nehru alias Couppoussamy of Neyam Makkal Kazhagam has declared assets worth Rs 77,00,50,328, while BJP’s GNS Rajasekaran has assets totalling Rs 68,33,78,507. A Johnkumar from the BJP follows with Rs 59,78,13,050.Candidates from the All India NR Congress also appear among the wealthiest, including PV Aroumougame with Rs 50,58,16,200 and former Puducherry assembly speaker VP Sivakolundhu with Rs 49,91,94,993. Independent candidate Omsakthisekar has declared assets worth Rs 44,46,38,294, while PRN Thirumurugan has Rs 37,22,53,000.Down the spectrumAt the other end of the spectrum, the data reveals stark contrasts. Three candidates, MP Simon Raj from Thirunallar, R Sundarraj from Mannadipet, and A Velu from Nettapakkam (SC), have declared zero assets.Among those with the lowest declared assets, Sutham Sundarrajan, an Independent candidate from Mudaliarpet, has declared assets of just Rs 300. L Manivannan from Ariankuppam follows with Rs 2,000, while S Amutha from Orleampeth has declared Rs 7,618.The distribution of wealth among candidates further reflects this divide. While 62 candidates (21%) have assets of Rs 5 crore and above, another 63 candidates (22%) have assets below Rs 10 lakh. A significant number, 79 candidates (27%), fall in the Rs 10 lakh to Rs 50 lakh range, while 64 candidates (22%) have assets between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 2 crore.Puducherry assembly elections 2026Over 9.4 lakh voters will determine the fate of the 294 candidates when polling takes place on April 9. Counting of votes in the Union territory will be held on May 4, along with Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.The Puducherry legislative assembly has 33 seats, of which elections are conducted for 30.
