PM Modi NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday interacted with government secretaries at Seva Teerth and reviewed key governance priorities, with discussions focusing on deregulation and reforms to improve ‘ease of doing business’ and ‘ease of living’, and promote ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance). According to PTI, the officials made detailed presentations on the functioning of their ministries, highlighting the progress achieved in various reform measures and citizen-centric initiatives.The prime minister has already set the goal of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047, when the country marks 100 years of Independence. Kalyan Banerjee (File photo) NEW DELHI: Kalyan Banerjee of the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday announced that it would move court after Kolkata Police rejected its application to hold the annual July 21 Martyrs’ Day (Shahid Diwas) rally.He told reporters that the faction was discussing an alternative venue instead of the usual Esplanade site but asserted that the programme date would remain unchanged.In addition to rejecting applications from both Trinamool factions, police have imposed a 60-day ban on gatherings across parts of central Kolkata, including the traditional venue of the then-undivided TMC’s annual Martyrs’ Day rally, citing intelligence inputs about possible violent demonstrations that could disrupt public order.The restrictions will come into effect on July 2 and remain in force till August 30 unless withdrawn earlier.”The application we submitted for July 21 has been rejected. We are deliberating on our next course of action and where to hold the meeting, but the date will remain unchanged. We will challenge this in court. It is undemocratic. Such actions are impermissible,” Banerjee said.”The current chief minister is afraid to listen to the opposition. He wants to shut down all democratic protests and rallies. But we will fight back — both in the political arena and in the courts,” he added, referring to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, a former Trinamool member.Earlier, the Mamata Banerjee faction had sought permission from the Kolkata Police Commissioner to organise the Shahid Diwas programme in front of Victoria House at Esplanade and requested approval for arrangements from July 19 to July 21, saying it wished to continue the longstanding tradition under the leadership of the former West Bengal chief minister, who founded the TMC in January 1998 after leaving the Congress.The undivided TMC had been observing Shahid Diwas in memory of the 13 Youth Congress workers who were killed after police opened fire on a Mamata Banerjee-led protest march under the state’s Left Front government on July 21, 1993, in Kolkata.This will be the first Martyrs’ Day since the Trinamool lost the assembly elections in April, ending its 15-year rule in West Bengal and triggering a split in the party.(With ANI inputs)Get the latest India news and live updates. Accused Roshan Suvarna (right) and victim Mayank Lohar NEW DELHI: The Government Railway Police (GRP) have recovered the knife allegedly used in the murder of a man by a co-passenger on a Mumbai local train, officials said on Tuesday.According to police, a viral video of the incident played a key role in the recovery of the alleged murder weapon.A restaurant manager in Borivali approached the police after watching the clip and informed them that one of his employees had found a knife in an alley near platforms 2 and 3 of Borivali railway station.Unaware of its possible connection to the crime, the employee took the knife to the restaurant’s staff room and kept it in a cardboard box. Officers later recovered it and concluded that it was the weapon used in the stabbing.Earlier, the accused, Roshan Suvarna, reportedly confessed during custodial interrogation that he had been carrying the knife in his bag for the past four to five months. He claimed he had taken the sharp, maroon-handled knife around seven months ago from an Amazon warehouse where a friend worked.Police said Suvarna told investigators that he threw the knife away after getting off at Borivali railway station. However, despite searching the route indicated by the accused, officers were initially unable to recover the weapon.In a related development, a magistrate’s court on Tuesday extended Suvarna’s police custody till July 6 after investigators sought seven more days to continue their probe.Seeking the extension, police told the court they needed more time to determine why Suvarna had been carrying the knife for several months, whether he had used it in any previous offences, and to establish the motive behind the crime.Opposing the plea, advocate Jaywant Patil, appearing for the accused, argued that police had cited the same grounds while seeking the earlier remand and had already been given sufficient time to ascertain the motive.After hearing both sides, the court extended Suvarna’s police custody till July 6.Suvarna was arrested for allegedly stabbing 22-year-old Mayank Lohar to death inside a first-class compartment of a Mumbai local train between Andheri and Borivali last week following an argument over keeping the door shut.Get the latest India news and live updates. SP MLA Kamal Akhtar (File photo) NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief whip in the Uttar Pradesh assembly Kamal Akhtar resigned from his post on Tuesday, saying he was stepping down on the directions of party president Akhilesh Yadav.”I have always followed the directions of our national president, Akhilesh Yadav ji. Whatever direction he gives will be followed,” Akhtar, the MLA from Kanth in Moradabad district, told PTI. Just as the term of the legislature comes to an end and people are replaced by new faces, the same process applies to organisational positions. My leader, Akhilesh Yadav, directed me that I should no longer work in this post and that the responsibility should be given to new people. As a party worker, it is my duty to abide by his instructions,” he added.Akhtar’s resignation as chief whip comes amid reports of a rift with Ruchi Vira, the SP’s Lok Sabha MP from Moradabad. When asked about the alleged rift, he told reporters they should seek a response from Vira.He also denied being angry or upset.”It would be better if you ask her. As far as I am concerned, I don’t think there has been any issue… Why should I be upset? A person feels upset only when he considers himself a leader. I have always considered myself a party worker. For the last 30 years, I have been with the Samajwadi Party, raising slogans of ‘Akhilesh Yadav Zindabad’ and ‘Mulayam Singh Yadav Zindabad’, and I will continue to do so,” he said.The Kanth MLA further stated that the SP’s national leadership would decide the next chief whip.”I am confident that a capable person will be chosen, and all of us will extend our full support to him,” he remarked.Akhtar was appointed to the post in July 2024 after the party’s then-chief whip, MLA Manoj Pandey, stepped down after voting for the BJP candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh in February that year.Meanwhile, Tuesday’s development also comes days after Uttar Pradesh minister OP Rajbhar, an ally of the ruling BJP, claimed that the SP was on the verge of a “major split.” According to Rajbhar, several of the SP’s “disgruntled MPs and leaders are ready to defect to the BJP or form a separate bloc.”Akhilesh Yadav has dismissed the allegations as “baseless.”Uttar Pradesh is due to hold assembly elections early next year.
