Sunetra Pawar PUNE: After Sharad Pawar took charge of steering the ship for his family following the death of his nephew Ajit Pawar, its members on Thursday backed deputy chief minister Sunetra Pawar’s name as NCP’s national president. While some other senior NCP functionaries showed reluctance for a merger with NCP (SP), the Pawar family said Sunetra would speak about it on behalf of her party.Interacting with reporters in Baramati, NCP (SP) state general secretary and Ajit Pawar’s nephew Rohit Pawar said: “As the Pawar family, we also wish that after taking charge as deputy CM, Sunetra Kaki (aunt) should be the next NCP chief.” On the issue of merger, he said there had been no discussion so far in the family. “We will take it up after the mourning period as it is important to know the members’ opinions. Since Sunetra Kaki (aunt) has taken charge as deputy CM and all NCP MLAs support her, she will speak on the merger after Feb 9. NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday accused the BJP of using the Election Commission during bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, saying that the party uses institutions when it begins to lose on real issues.“Election commissions are working at the behest of the BJP. Of all the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission has worked on the directions of the BJP. When the BJP starts to lose on real issues, it hides behind institutions to carry out its attacks,” he said during a visit to Rajasthan.In the final voter list of Uttar Pradesh released on Friday after the Special Intensive Revision, the electorate has increased by over 84 lakh. Chief electoral officer Navdeep Rinwa said the final voter list now has 13.39 crore voters, up from 12.55 crore in the draft roll published in January.Rinwa said the process involved hearings and verification, and stressed that no voter’s name was removed without due process. “If a name present in the draft roll is missing in the final list, it is either due to a Form-6 application or a decision taken by the ERO after due hearing,” he said.He added that political parties were involved throughout the process. Chief electoral officer Navdeep Rinwa said the final voter list now has 13.39 crore voters, up from 12.55 crore in the draft roll published in January.Rinwa said the process involved hearings and verification, and stressed that no voter’s name was removed without due process. “If a name present in the draft roll is missing in the final list, it is either due to a Form-6 application or a decision taken by the ERO after due hearing,” he said.He added that political parties were involved throughout the process. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday participated in a signature campaign at Delhi University’s (DU) Faculty of Arts in support of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Women’s Reservation Act), where she highlighted the need to enhance women’s participation in governance and policymaking.Speaking on the act, Gupta said, “I often wonder why we all need this reservation. Every person, every woman, every daughter may not be able to reach this far on their own through normal courses. But today, women should play a much bigger role in running this country, in administration, in policy-making.” Gupta said meaningful change can be achieved only when women occupy decision-making positions, enabling them to address issues that directly affect society, families and their own lives.She highlighted the Delhi government initiatives such as Lakhpati Bitiya and Anmol schemes, describing them as outcomes of sensitive and inclusive policy-making aimed at women’s empowerment and strengthening social security.The event showcased women’s leadership and equal representation, with messages like “It’s time for women to lead”, and “Empowered women, prosperous nation”.”I believe that when women come forward, become MLAs, ministers, and chief ministers, only then will it be possible to bring about change in the system,” Gupta asserted.Calling the legislation a historic step, the chief minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its passage, saying the law furthers the cause from “Beti Bachao” (protect women) to “Beti Badhao” (empower women).”Through this platform, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the prime minister for the monumental effort he undertook to introduce this legislation.
