DHAKA: A total of 32 prominent citizens and rights activists on Saturday condemned the planned killings, especially the killing of minorities, serial violence and the burning of houses in the country, stressing that the Prof Yunus-led interim govt is failing to prosecute the perpetrators of violence against the minorities. They demanded that those responsible for the incidents be brought to justice and strict punishment be meted out to them. “We also note with surprise and anger that the govt is repeatedly failing to promptly investigate the incidents and bring to justice those responsible for the sabotage, murder and attacks,” the eminent citizens said in a statement released to the media on Saturday. Violence against minorities: Yunus government slammed for poor probe, trial

Home minister Amit Shah with Rajasthan CM Sharma, Haryana CM Saini and Union jal shakti minister CR Patil in New Delhi, Monday NEW DELHI: Haryana and Rajasthan Monday signed an agreement that allows the latter to get water from the Yamuna Canal through three underground pipelines from July to Oct every year under the 1994 memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the sharing of utilisable surface waters of the Upper Yamuna Basin.The agreement, signed in the national capital in the presence of Union home and cooperation minister Amit Shah and jal shakti minister C R Patil, will facilitate the supply of drinking water to the districts of Sikar, Churu and Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, as well as Bhiwani and Fatehabad areas in Haryana. The 32year-old agreement could not be implemented until now because of the absence of a canal system to supply water to Rajasthan. The move will now allow the implementation of the Yamuna Water Project.Stating that the agreement had resolved the three-decadeold water-related problem faced by people of Haryana and Rajasthan, Shah said the agreement is an excellent example of the mantra ‘Solution Through Dialogue’ given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.“This agreement demonstrates that if states move forward with the spirit of cooperative federalism, even a problem persisting for three decades can be resolved easily… It’s a win-win situation for both the states,” said Shah. Rajasthan chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini were also present on the occasion.Shah said water that earlier went to waste will now quench people’s thirst and will be stored in large ponds to recharge the groundwater level. Approximately 580 million cubic metres of water will be supplied from Yamuna Canal to Rajasthan through three underground pipelines having a diameter of more than 3.6 metres.The project seeks to ensure the conveyance of Rajasthan’s allocated share of Yamuna waters through an underground pipeline system from Western Yamuna Canal, enabling the state to effectively utilise the water allocated to it under the 1994 MoU by the Yamuna Basin states — UP, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal and Delhi regarding allocation of the surface flow of the river. PM Modi invited to US; Trump likely to visit India next year, says US envoy Sergio Gor NEW DELHI: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Monday (local time) said that Washington would ‘love to have’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit the United States again. Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026, Gor also expressed confidence that the proposed interim India-US trade agreement would be finalised ‘sooner rather than later’. He said US President Donald Trump remained closely engaged with India-US relations and stressed the need to institutionalise regular Quad ministerial meetings.”Secretary Marco Rubio invited PM Modi while visiting him… We love to have him back here. And I know he’s coming in December for the G20,” Gor said.Referring to his recent interaction with President Trump, Gor said he had briefed him on his visit to India and the growing economic relationship between the two countries.”I have been with the President for 10 years, so a large part of the conversation was like two friends catching up… but I also told him about my visits to India… I also spoke to him about the growing trade relations. On both sides, we see businesses coming here and going there every week, and it is a win-win situation for both,” he said.On the ongoing negotiations for the interim India-US trade deal, Gor said the discussions were progressing well, although the agreement involved thousands of items and required extensive legal work.”Ambassador Greer has the President’s full confidence, and so we are getting close to finalising that. But these things are complex legal things, and this is not one page. We have thousands of items between our two nations that we are working on. And so the fact that we’ve gone so far, that is a great sign for the relationship, and I am hopeful that we will be able to wrap this up sooner rather than later,” he said.Asked about the possibility of President Trump’s visit to India, Gor indicated that such a visit was likely next year.”It’s not any time during the midterms. It has to be somewhere next year… We would love to make that happen sooner rather than later,” he said.Earlier, on May 23, Gor had announced that Rubio had extended an invitation on behalf of President Trump for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House in the near future. Expressing solidarity with Afghanistan, Indian govt said in a statement that this “blatant act of aggression” by Pakistan was an assault on Afghanistan’s sovereignty and a direct threat to regional peace and stability. “It reflects Pakistan’s persistent pattern of reckless behaviour and its futile attempt to externalize internal failures through desperate acts of violence beyond its borders,” said the ministry of external affairs. “India conveys its condolences to Afghan families that have lost loved ones, prays for early recovery of those injured and reiterates its unwavering support for Afghanistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it added.Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: As concern grows over student stress, suicides in coaching hubs, dummy schools and safety lapses at private institutes, the Centre is weighing the possibility of both a national law to regulate the coaching sector and redesigning entrance exams to make private coaching less decisive in JEE, NEET-UG and CUET-UG. The reason: a nine-member committee set up by the education ministry has concluded that dependence on coaching cannot be tackled only by inspecting institutes or penalising misleading advertisements. The problem, it found, is rooted as much in the design of entrance tests, weak confidence in board marks, dummy schooling and earlyage exam preparation as in the commercial practices of coaching centres. The proposals are part of a report being finalised by the committee, set up in June 2025 under higher education secretary Vineet Joshi to examine students’ dependence on coaching, spread of “dummy schools” and fairness of high-stakes entrance tests, said a source. The final report is likely to be submitted to the govt in a couple of weeks with far-reaching recommendations. The draft’s approach is to regulate the industry and reduce its indispensability.It plans to achieve that through stronger schools, credible boards, entrance tests aligned more closely with classroom learning, and greater transparency in coaching claims. TOI learnt that based on the draft report, the committee recommended that the govt examine “a comprehensive regulatory framework for coaching centres — including consideration of legislative measures”. Citing “the scale and systemic role of the coaching sector”, it calls for “uniform standards on transparency, accountability and student protection”. One of its sharpest proposals is to “mandate transparency — full disclosure of faculty qualifications and verified enrolment-versussuccess data, and curbs on misleading advertising”. According to an official, “The idea is to hit the topperclaim model in which institutes advertise ranks and selections without stating whether candidates were long-term classroom students, test-series users, scholarship students or only associated after results.” The draft also recommends that the govt “examine limits on daily coaching hours for school-going students”, noting that “a two-tothree-hour cap was specifically proposed.” It suggests examining whether intensive coaching should be confined to the post-class XII stage, seeking “jurisdictional clarity between schools and coaching”, and using “real-time biometric attendance to address dummy schooling,” along with student-wellbeing safeguards.Get the latest India news and live updates.
