NEW DELHI: India said on Friday it did not recognise China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, asserting that it passed through Indian territory under forcible and illegal occupation of Pakistan. “Shaksgam Valley is Indian territory. We have never recognised the so-called China-Pakistan ‘Boundary Agreement’ signed in 1963. We have consistently maintained that the agreement is illegal and invalid,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. India, he said, had consistently protested to China against attempts to alter the ground reality in Shaksgam Valley. “We further reserve the right to take necessary measures to safeguard our interests,” he said. On the Chinese military exercise near Taiwan, MEA called for restraint from all sides, eschewing unilateral action and resolving all issues through peaceful means. NEW DELHI: In a move that aligns with New Delhi’s consistent position that Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK) is an integral part of India, the Delimitation Bill, 2026 incorporates a provision authorising Election Commission to conduct delimitation of J&K constituencies that are currently under occupation by Pakistan whenever they “cease to be so occupied”.The elected strength of J&K assembly is 90; this does not include the 24 seats in POJK that remain ‘vacant’ and are not taken into account to calculate total membership of the assembly. The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 authorises the delimitation commission to decide on a revised strength of the J&K assembly, which shall not be below the current 114 seats. It rolls back the provision in J&K Reorganisation Act to exclude POJK area and seats while delimiting the territorial constituencies of J&K.The bill proposes to amend Section 15 of J&K Reorganisation Act to raise the number of women who may be nominated to J&K assembly by the LG to three from two. However, this shall be incre-ased only after readjustment of constituencies takes effect, based on fresh delimitation.According to the statement of objects and reasons of the bill, the provisions of Govt of Union Territories Act, 1963, Govt of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, and Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, are based on the existing constitutional framework relating to population, delimitation and reservation. KOLKATA: Not a single applicant approaching the appellate tribunal against SIR deletion nor their lawyers seem to have any clarity about the process to follow if they want to get back on the voter roll.Haridevpur resident Aloke Basu had gone to Joka’s Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee National Institute of Water and Sanitation for two consecutive days —Sunday and Monday — with the hope that the tribunal will hear his case that his last name has been wrongfully recorded as ‘Bose’ leading to deletion. But till now there has been no communication of a hearing. “I have contacted my BLO, he doesn’t know. Neighbours — quite a many — who have been deleted are in touch on whether we are being called for hearing. We don’t know if we will be heard or our fate will lie on the same absurd logic that led to our deletion in the first place,” Basu said.Raghunath Chakraborty, a lawyer who has been extensively providing legal advice to deleted voters in Howrah, said, “They could have had some website where the hearing dates could have been enlisted.” Lawyers like Chakraborty and advocate Saikat Thakurata have been helping people from weaker economic backgrounds file appeals and represent them pro bono.While 16 tribunals, according to Chief Justice Sujoy Paul’s letter to SC on Monday, started functioning from Monday, the deleted electors and their lawyers remain under confusion as to how they will be called upon for hearing and where can they view the orders passed by these tribunals.During the April 6 hearing at SC, CJI Surya Kant, referring to CJ Paul’s letter, noted that a retired chief justice had flagged the issue regarding the procedure for providing ‘personal hearing’ to the affected party.“There is no clarity as to how the applicant will be called. Whether it will be a personal hearing or the tribunal is simply going to go through the already submitted documents. Interestingly, which documents will be given to the tribunal is also now known to the applicant,” said Calcutta High Court advocate Firdous Samim.He has the experience of appearing for two candidates fielded in the election by Congress and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) — Motab Shaikh from Farakka and Kechhabuddin Sekh from Kaliganj, respectively.In case of Motab, Samim had physically appeared at Bichar Bhawan where documents were provided and subsequently Motab’s name was restored, enabling him to stand as a candidate. Citing the SC order of Sept 8, 2025, former Justice T S Sivagnanam observed that Aadhar card can be accepted as a supporting document. Though it is not a proof of citizenship, it is “one of the documents enumerated for the purpose of establishing the identity of a person”.Meanwhile, in the case of Kechhabuddin, Samim was given a conference call link and he presented his client’s case. Kechhabuddin was also present during the hearing. Ultimately, his name was also directed to be included as it was found that documents given clearly showed that he’s a permanent resident of Nadia’s Hat Gobindapur village. Samim suggested that there can be an online platform where orders are uploaded because even in the petition filed in SC on Monday, the counsel had cited Motab’s case as precedence. Even though a three-member panel comprising of former CJ T S Sivagnanam, Justice Pradipta Roy, and Justice Pranab Kumar Deb was formed by the CJ Sujoy Paul after SC order of April 7 to form the SOP, the deleted electors remain confused as to how they would be called for hearing. NEW DELHI: As the opposition geared up for a joint meeting to take a collective view on the contentious delimitation bill on the eve of the special Parliament session, Congress Tuesday said the draft constitutional amendment bill doesn’t maintain state-wise proportionality of LS seats, and demanded that women’s quota be done on the existing lower House strength, implementable within a week. Congress’s view, coupled with TN CM Stalin’s “warning”, suggested the opposition may take a hostile stance on the govt agenda, even opposing bills. Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi said, “The bill received Tuesday afternoon was bristling with errors. It is completely silent on the PM’s assurances on maintaining inter-state percentage parity. The delimitation commission, an external quasi-judicial authority, has nowhere been mandated to ensure this.” Inter-state parity refers to concerns that an increase in LS seats would hurt southern and smaller states – a point flagged by K C Venugopal. Party spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said, “When the intent behind a bill is mischievous and content of it is devious, the extent of damage to parliamentary democracy is enormous.” DMK MP P Wilson said population criteria would “reduce southern states to politically irrelevant entities”. CPM MP John Brittas called it a strategy to reduce southern India to a “political colony of the north”. RJD MP Manoj Jha echoed similar concerns. Sources said all INDIA bloc parties will attend the meeting. NEW DELHI: CBI filed 22 fresh FIRs and raided 77 locations across 8 states and UTs on Tuesday in compliance with Supreme Court’s order to investigate an “unholy nexus” between builders and bank officials cheating innocent homebuyers.“These coordinated search operations are part of a nationwide crackdown. Officials seized incriminating documents, digital devices, and other materials,” said a CBI spokesperson.The raids aimed at gathering crucial evidence to unravel the larger conspiracy involving alleged diversion of funds, financial irregularities, and fraudulent practices in the housing real estate sector, an official said.CBI had earlier filed 28 cases against various builders. “Those cases are under final stages of investigation,” the agency said.Early last year, SC had directed CBI to file seven cases against builders in NCR following petitions from over 1000 homebuyers. Later, the court asked the agency to register six more FIRs to investigate real estate projects in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mohali, and Prayagraj.Most of the cases pertain to NCR projects duping homebuyers through “subvention schemes”. The petitioners have alleged that bank officials disbursed loans to builders under the scheme without due diligence as the projects remained on paper only.CBI has filed 22 FIRs and raided 77 locations following SC directions to probe the unholy nexus between builders and bank officials that defrauded homebuyers. Most cases involve NCR projects under subvention schemes, where banks released loans without due diligence for projects that existed only on paper.
