NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday extended New Year greetings to the nation, praying “for peace, good health and happiness in society” as India welcomed the year 2026.Sharing a post on X, the PM posted, “Wishing everyone a wonderful 2026! May the year ahead bring good health and prosperity, with success in your efforts and fulfilment in all that you do.””Praying for peace and happiness in our society,” the prime minister added.In a separate post, PM Modi shared a video and noted, “Very warm wishes to all of you for 2026. We hope that this year brings new hopes, new resolutions, and a fresh sense of self-confidence for everyone. May it inspire all to move forward in life.”Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed New Year greetings describing the occasion as a time of renewed energy and fresh beginnings. “May the year 2026 bring peace, happiness and prosperity into our lives and infuse new energy to build a stronger and more prosperous India,” she said.India welcomed the New Year with vibrant celebrations across the country on Thursday night, as cities lit up with fireworks, cultural programmes, live music and themed decorations. Is there any judgment of this Court where we have interfered at that stage?” the bench of Justices PK Mishra and AS Chandurkar said.Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Natarajan, submitted that a candidate is required to disclose only criminal cases carrying a minimum sentence of two years, and in the present matter, only summons had been issued.Singhvi argued that Natarajan’s nomination paper for the Rajya Sabha election in Madhya Pradesh was wrongly rejected by the RO on the grounds of alleged non-disclosure of a criminal case under the Representation of the People Act.An order issued by Rajya Sabha Returning Officer Arvind Sharma stated that, after examining the available documents, Natarajan was found to have submitted an incomplete affidavit by omitting a court complaint in Form 26 filed along with her nomination.According to a Madhya Pradesh Assembly official, BJP candidate Mahesh Kewat had filed a complaint with the Returning Officer alleging that Natarajan failed to disclose a case registered against her in Telangana.The rejection of her nomination ultimately resulted in the BJP winning all three Rajya Sabha seats that fell vacant in Madhya Pradesh.Get the latest India news and live updates. ANI NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Friday announced a series of changes to the NEET (UG) 2026 examination, including an extended exam window and a revised question paper booklet design, as part of efforts to make the test more candidate-friendly.In a statement the NTA said it is “committed to ensuring that NEET (UG)-2026 examination is conducted in a manner that is fair, secure and responsive to the needs of candidates.” Watch NEET-UG Retest Under Maximum Security: Paper Setters Placed In Lockdown At Secret Facility”As part of this effort, a few candidate-friendly changes have been introduced for NEET (UG) 2026,” the agency added.Explaining the basis for the changes, the agency said, “Based on feedback received from candidates over the years, the examination window has been extended to 195 minutes and will be from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM.”The NTA clarified that this includes “the time required for mandatory examination formalities such as signing of attendance sheets and other invigilation procedures.”It further said, “The revised examination window has been designed to ensure that candidates are able to utilize the intended examination time without feeling that administrative processes are taking away from their opportunity to attempt the paper.”On changes to exam materials, the agency said, “Candidates will now be provided with four rough-work pages instead of two, giving them more room for calculations, diagrams and other workings during the examination.”It added that feedback had highlighted accessibility concerns in earlier formats. “Earlier, rough-work pages were provided only at the end of the booklet. While this arrangement worked well for many candidates, feedback indicated that it was less convenient for some, particularly left-handed candidates.”“To address this, two rough-work pages have now been placed immediately after the instruction page at the beginning of the booklet, while two pages will continue to be available at the end,” the NTA said.The agency added that the revised structure has been implemented across language versions so that candidates can use whichever format is more convenient.The NTA said, “Even small improvements in examination design can have a positive impact on the experience of candidates during a high-stakes examination.”It added, “These measures have therefore been introduced with the objective of making the examination process more comfortable and candidate-friendly while maintaining the highest standards of fairness and security.”Candidates have been advised to carefully follow instructions provided in the admit card and information bulletin and “cooperate with the examination staff for the smooth conduct of the examination.”Key changes announced by NTA:NEET UG 2026 exam scheduled for June 21, 2026Exam window extended to 195 minutes (2:00 PM to 5:15 PM)Administrative time included in the exam durationRough work pages increased from 2 to 4Two rough sheets moved to beginning of question bookleRemaining rough sheets retained at the endLayout revised for both English and regional language papersThe development follows earlier disruption in the NEET-UG 2026 cycle after the National Testing Agency cancelled the examination amid allegations of a coordinated question paper leak. The exam, originally conducted on May 3 for over 22 lakh candidates, was cancelled on May 12 after reports of irregularities, triggering widespread anger and agitation among aspirants and parents. Rajasthan Police SOG had flagged a “guess paper” circulating on messaging platforms that reportedly matched a large number of questions from the test. ANI NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Friday announced a series of changes to the NEET (UG) 2026 examination, including an extended exam window and a revised question paper booklet design, as part of efforts to make the test more candidate-friendly.In a statement the NTA said it is “committed to ensuring that NEET (UG)-2026 examination is conducted in a manner that is fair, secure and responsive to the needs of candidates.” Watch NEET-UG Retest Under Maximum Security: Paper Setters Placed In Lockdown At Secret Facility”As part of this effort, a few candidate-friendly changes have been introduced for NEET (UG) 2026,” the agency added.Explaining the basis for the changes, the agency said, “Based on feedback received from candidates over the years, the examination window has been extended to 195 minutes and will be from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM.”The NTA clarified that this includes “the time required for mandatory examination formalities such as signing of attendance sheets and other invigilation procedures.”It further said, “The revised examination window has been designed to ensure that candidates are able to utilize the intended examination time without feeling that administrative processes are taking away from their opportunity to attempt the paper.”On changes to exam materials, the agency said, “Candidates will now be provided with four rough-work pages instead of two, giving them more room for calculations, diagrams and other workings during the examination.”It added that feedback had highlighted accessibility concerns in earlier formats. “Earlier, rough-work pages were provided only at the end of the booklet. While this arrangement worked well for many candidates, feedback indicated that it was less convenient for some, particularly left-handed candidates.”“To address this, two rough-work pages have now been placed immediately after the instruction page at the beginning of the booklet, while two pages will continue to be available at the end,” the NTA said.The agency added that the revised structure has been implemented across language versions so that candidates can use whichever format is more convenient.The NTA said, “Even small improvements in examination design can have a positive impact on the experience of candidates during a high-stakes examination.”It added, “These measures have therefore been introduced with the objective of making the examination process more comfortable and candidate-friendly while maintaining the highest standards of fairness and security.”Candidates have been advised to carefully follow instructions provided in the admit card and information bulletin and “cooperate with the examination staff for the smooth conduct of the examination.”Key changes announced by NTA:NEET UG 2026 exam scheduled for June 21, 2026Exam window extended to 195 minutes (2:00 PM to 5:15 PM)Administrative time included in the exam durationRough work pages increased from 2 to 4Two rough sheets moved to beginning of question bookleRemaining rough sheets retained at the endLayout revised for both English and regional language papersThe development follows earlier disruption in the NEET-UG 2026 cycle after the National Testing Agency cancelled the examination amid allegations of a coordinated question paper leak. The exam, originally conducted on May 3 for over 22 lakh candidates, was cancelled on May 12 after reports of irregularities, triggering widespread anger and agitation among aspirants and parents. Rajasthan Police SOG had flagged a “guess paper” circulating on messaging platforms that reportedly matched a large number of questions from the test. (Photo credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar took a swipe at the United State’s shifting stance and Western nations’ double standards, saying Washington imposes and lifts sanctions or tariffs based on its own interests and not on any fixed principle.Speaking at the Kultaranta Talks in Finland on Thursday, Jaishankar strongly defended India’s decision to buy Russian oil and said, “Let’s not pretend that there is some great principle involved here. They do it when it suits them and don’t do it when it doesn’t,” referring to the West’s changing approach towards Russian oil. He also recalled that the United States had itself encouraged New Delhi to buy Russian crude to help stabilise global oil prices.Responding to a question on India’s ties with Russia and its continued purchase of Russian oil, Jaishankar said India’s energy decisions were guided by affordability and availability rather than geopolitics.”I’ll make two observations. I buy oil based on cost and availability. So at that point of time, much of the oil available in the market was Russian because Europeans were essentially buying oil from the Middle East, which was our traditional supplier. So circumstances pushed us in a certain direction,” Jaishankar said.He noted that India was not a major buyer of Russian crude before the Ukraine war.”We didn’t buy a significant amount of Russian oil till 2022. Circumstances compelled us to get into that market and I must say the Russians have been steady suppliers because they put the cargoes out there and you go out there and buy oil, whichever is the most reasonable and available oil.”‘US specifically asked India to buy Russian oil’Jaishankar said Washington had recognised the importance of keeping global energy markets stable after sanctions were imposed on Russia.”I do want people to remember this. At that time, the US specifically asked India to buy Russian oil to stabilize the world markets. We buy oil based on cost and availability,” he said.The minister then pointed to what he described as inconsistencies in the US approach towards Russian oil.”Right now, if you see, after having first put tariffs on us last year for buying Russian oil, the US then again lifted its sanctions,” he said.”So let’s not pretend that there is some great principle involved here. I mean if it is on, off, on, off and do it when it suits us and don’t do it when it doesn’t suit us. Come on, we are all adults in the room, we know what the game is. I don’t think making this about sanctimony is really warranted…” he added.The external affairs minister reiterated that India’s energy policy is driven by national interest and the need to ensure affordable supplies for its economy.”Today our largest oil supplier and little less than 40% is Russia. Our largest gas supply is the United States and that was not the case till 28th February of this year. The main supplier was Qatar. So what is happening is the world is also de-risking on the region. People are looking for alternative energy sources…” Jaishankar said.India emerged as one of the biggest buyers of discounted Russian crude after the outbreak of the Ukraine war in 2022. New Delhi has consistently maintained that its oil purchases are based on commercial considerations and energy security needs.The ‘on and off’ US pressure on IndiaEarlier last week, US secretary of state Marco Rubio said the Trump administration wanted to end sanctions waivers and special arrangements that have allowed countries such as India to continue importing Russian oil.Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Washington and its allies have alternated between criticising India’s purchases of discounted Russian crude and quietly accepting them as a way to prevent a sharp rise in global energy prices.For much of the conflict, Western governments acknowledged that Indian purchases helped keep Russian oil flowing into global markets and prevented a major supply shock.However, Washington has recently renewed pressure on countries continuing to buy Russian crude, even as New Delhi insists that energy procurement decisions are sovereign matters driven by national requirements.US officials argue that allies should not undermine sanctions aimed at weakening Russia’s war effort. India has repeatedly maintained that it will continue purchasing oil based on commercial viability and energy security considerations, irrespective of changing geopolitical calculations.Last month, petroleum ministry joint secretary Sujata Sharma reiterated that position saying that, “Regarding (the) American waiver on Russia, I would like to emphasize that we have been purchasing from Russia earlier … I mean before waiver also, during waiver also, and now also.”Several critics have also pointed out that China remains one of the biggest buyers of Russian energy, yet Washington has been more cautious in targeting Beijing, highlighting what many see as an inconsistent approach to sanctions enforcement.Jaishankar also pushed back against European criticism of India’s position on Russia, saying, “No European country has been attacked with Indian weapons. I wish I could say that for European weapons vis-a-vis India… Europeans sell weapons which are used to attack India. Not now, for many years. We Indians have never done anything to endanger Europe.
