PM Modi shared images of Param Vir heroes (Image/X@narendramodi) NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said portraits of soldiers from the British era at Rashtrapati Bhavan have been replaced with those of India’s own heroes. The change comes with the inauguration of the Param Vir Gallery, which honours Param Vir Chakra awardees and marks a move away from colonial-era symbols.In a post on X, the Prime Minister shared photographs from the gallery and highlighted the tribute to the nation’s defenders.“O Supreme Warriors of India. Salutations to you, O Radiant Heroes! This nation is grateful for the sacrifices. For the honors of Mother India!,” his post read. Explaining the significance of the gallery, he said: “In the Param Vir Gallery of Rashtrapati Bhavan, these portraits of the country’s indomitable heroes are a heartfelt tribute to our nation’s defenders. Those heroes who protected the motherland with their supreme sacrifices, who gave their lives for the unity and integrity of India… the nation has expressed its gratitude to them in yet another form.”PM Modi highlighted that the dedication of the gallery was made in the presence of the families of two Param Vir Chakra awardees and other gallantry award recipients, which, he said, made the occasion “even more special”.In another post, the Prime Minister said the change reflects India’s effort to move away from a colonial mindset. “For a long period, portraits of soldiers from the British era were displayed in the gallery of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. KOLKATA: With last-minute relief following the publication of the appellate tribunal’s supplementary list on Wednesday, a few of the 139 lucky voters, who had lost hope, finally got their index fingers inked.Ainul Miah (30) from Cooch Behar was able to cast his vote at a booth under the Sitalkuchi assembly constituency. “My sister and I had both submitted all our documents, including our house deed, but our names were struck off. I am happy that I could finally vote,” he said.But the relatives of many of the lucky ones did not get to exercise their franchise. Ainul’s sister’s case is yet to be resolved. “My other siblings and my father voted as their names are in the final roll, but I am still concerned for my sister,” he said. Ainul added, “This is my fundamental right, which I lost under the category of logical discrepancy, where I had no role.Twin brothers Sk Kismat and Sk Kurban also got their names on the rolls after the appellate tribunal’s supplementary list was published.In their family of seven, the names of all five brothers had been deleted. Three were later restored on the rolls. Relief for Kismat and Kurban came 24 hours before the first phase of polling.Kismat said, “We went together to celebrate this hard-earned victory. We had submitted valid proof at the time of the hearing, but all our names were deleted. We did not think we would be able to vote this time. We are very relieved that we could participate in the polling process.”Dhananjay Sardar (30), who lives in a small village in Murshidabad, had his name included on the electoral rolls on Wednesday. Expressing relief after casting his vote, he said, “I was worried even after my name appeared, but everything went smoothly.”Biplab Majumder, a teacher from Malda, was not as lucky. KOLKATA: With last-minute relief following the publication of the appellate tribunal’s supplementary list on Wednesday, a few of the 139 lucky voters, who had lost hope, finally got their index fingers inked.Ainul Miah (30) from Cooch Behar was able to cast his vote at a booth under the Sitalkuchi assembly constituency. “My sister and I had both submitted all our documents, including our house deed, but our names were struck off. I am happy that I could finally vote,” he said.But the relatives of many of the lucky ones did not get to exercise their franchise. Ainul’s sister’s case is yet to be resolved. “My other siblings and my father voted as their names are in the final roll, but I am still concerned for my sister,” he said. Ainul added, “This is my fundamental right, which I lost under the category of logical discrepancy, where I had no role.Twin brothers Sk Kismat and Sk Kurban also got their names on the rolls after the appellate tribunal’s supplementary list was published.In their family of seven, the names of all five brothers had been deleted. Three were later restored on the rolls. Relief for Kismat and Kurban came 24 hours before the first phase of polling.Kismat said, “We went together to celebrate this hard-earned victory. We had submitted valid proof at the time of the hearing, but all our names were deleted. We did not think we would be able to vote this time. We are very relieved that we could participate in the polling process.”Dhananjay Sardar (30), who lives in a small village in Murshidabad, had his name included on the electoral rolls on Wednesday. Expressing relief after casting his vote, he said, “I was worried even after my name appeared, but everything went smoothly.”Biplab Majumder, a teacher from Malda, was not as lucky. NEW DELHI: Congress functionary TN Prathapan has approached the Supreme Court, alleging violation of the model code of conduct due to the broadcast of PM Modi’s April 18 speech by state-run channels Doordarshan and Sansad TV.The petition, which lies in defect as per its status on the SC website, claimed the PM’s speech, blaming opposition parties for the defeat of the 131st Constitutional amendment bill, was used to influence voters during the ongoing elections. It is alleged that the use of publicly funded broadcasters to air a political speech amounted to the misuse of official machinery.The plea said this fell within the definition of corrupt practice under section 123(7) of Representation of People Act, which barred the use of government machinery for electoral purposes. NEW DELHI: After 35 years without a single witness being called to record oral evidence, the Supreme Court has stayed the trial proceedings against a police officer, indicating that it was in favour of quashing the case on the ground of delay alone. A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi issued notice to Uttar Pradesh govt seeking its response on why the case should not be quashed. The officer is facing trial for charges under Sections 147 (rioting), 323 (causing hurt) and 504 (insult) of IPC and Section 120 of the Railway Act.
