Any proven concealment or false declaration in election affidavits may invite criminal proceedings under applicable laws, potentially leading to fines or imprisonment, and could also result in disqualification from contesting elections under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. MYSORE: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday hit back at BJP over its accusations against Congress and said the Modi government should have immediately implemented the Women’s Reservation Act after it was enacted in 2023. Talking to reporters here, he said Congress has always been in favour of women getting more representation in elected bodies and said a Congress government brought the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution, leading to reservations for women in panchayati raj institutions. He alleged that PM Modi is not in favour of social justice. “The Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in 2023, it should have been implemented, what was the need to wait?” he asked. He rejected the Prime Minister’s accusation that Congress and its allies committed feticide by voting against the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill which was linked to delimitation based on 2011 census. “Prime Minister’s attitude is discriminatory and he is not in favour of social justice,” Siddaramaiah alleged. Opposition leaders claimed that the government wanted to do limitation on the basis of the 2011 census as it did not want to take caste data into account. The government has rejected the allegations. He asked why PM Modi did not implement women’s reservation in legislatures during the nearly 12 years that the BJP-led government has been in power at the Centre. “Let it be implemented even now, according to the 2023 Act,” he said. The Chief Minister said it would be appropriate to do the delimitation of constituencies after the census. Referring to the Delimitation Bill linked to the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill, which was firmly opposed by opposition parties in Lok Sabha last week, he said Lok Sabha seats were proposed to be increased by 50%, which would have been unfair to the states of South India. “The states of South India have done population control well, while the states of North India have not. Naturally, it will be beneficial for them and disadvantageous for the states of South India,” he said. The Congress leader accused the Prime Minister of playing politics. “There was no need to bring women’s reservation and delimitation together. He asked why PM Modi did not implement women’s reservation in legislatures during the nearly 12 years that the BJP-led government has been in power at the Centre. “Let it be implemented even now, according to the 2023 Act,” he said. The Chief Minister said it would be appropriate to do the delimitation of constituencies after the census. Referring to the Delimitation Bill linked to the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill, which was firmly opposed by opposition parties in Lok Sabha last week, he said Lok Sabha seats were proposed to be increased by 50%, which would have been unfair to the states of South India. “The states of South India have done population control well, while the states of North India have not. Naturally, it will be beneficial for them and disadvantageous for the states of South India,” he said. The Congress leader accused the Prime Minister of playing politics. “There was no need to bring women’s reservation and delimitation together. NEW DELHI: Congress hit out at the BJP-led central government on Monday over Pakistan holding US-Iran talks, terming it a “substantial setback for Mr Modi’s foreign policy”. Citing foreign minister S Jaishankar’s “dalal (broker or middleman)” remark for Pakistan, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed out that the same nation was set to host the second round of US-Iran talks on Tuesday.”It is a monumental setback for Mr. Modi’s foreign policy. India needs a complete overhaul of its diplomatic engagement strategy and tactics—which Mr. Modi is simply incapable of doing,” he said in a post on X.”The ‘dalal’ country, as the erudite and always nattily dressed External Affairs Minister described it, is reportedly hosting the second round of US-Iran peace talks today. After the completion of the first round of these talks on April 12th, Pakistan borrowed billion from Saudi Arabia and Qatar to repay a .5 billion loan taken from the UAE and to retire a .43 billion tranche of Eurobonds,” he added.Highlighting the importance of Pakisan’s diplomatic role in the current situation, Ramesh said that “Prime Minister Modi’s regional and global engagement and narrative management have failed to isolate Pakistan”.”Pakistan’s economy is clearly in dire straits and it depends on largesse given to it by friendly countries. But it is for now playing a pivotal diplomatic role after having given sanctuary to Osama Bin Laden and other terrorists, bombing drug rehabilitation centres in Afghanistan, and most recently orchestrating the Pahalgam terror attack a year ago,” he said.”It is abundantly clear that the substance and style of Prime Minister Modi’s regional and global engagement and narrative management have failed to isolate Pakistan which has received a whole new branding – different from what Dr. Manmohan Singh had been able to achieve after the terror attacks in Mumbai in Nov 2008,” he added.Talking about US President Donald Trump’s fondness for Pakistan army chief Asim Munir, the Congress leader said, “That Field Marshal Asim Munir – whose provocative and inflammatory remarks provided the oxygen for the Pahalgam terror attack – has become such a huge favourite of President Trump is a particularly severe setback for India. That the Field Marshal and his colleagues seem to have succeeded in managing the Trump ecosystem of family and associates much better than India is obvious.”Munir spoke to Trump regarding the upcoming talks and conveyed that the blockade of Strait of Hormuz was a “hurdle” in talks.
