PTI photo NEW DELHI: India on Friday sealed a Rs 7,995 crore deal with the US as part of a “follow-on support” package for the Navy’s fleet of 24 Seahawk helicopters for five years. The signing of the contract comes amid a strain in ties after US President Donald Trump slapped 50% tariffs on Indian goods in late Aug. The defence ministry said it signed Letters of Offer and Acceptance (LOAs) with the US for sustainment support of the MH60R helicopter fleet . Manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corporation, it is an all-weather helicopter designed to support multiple missions with state of the art avionics and sensors. The LOAs were inked under the foreign military sales programme of the US. India had signed an agreement with the US for procurement of 24-MH 60Rs in Feb 2020. The MH 60R Seahawk is a maritime variant of the Blackhawk helicopter. The sustainment support is a comprehensive package that includes provisioning of spares, support equipment, product support, training and technical support, and repair and replenishment of components, according to the defence ministry. It also provides for setting up of intermediate level component repairs and periodic maintenance inspection facilities in India for the choppers. “In-country development of these facilities will ensure capability build-up in the long run and reduced dependence on the US govt, thus aligning with the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’,” the ministry said. “This would further lead to indigenous product and services development through MSMEs & other Indian firms,” it said in a statement. The TMC won the seat in 2011 and 2016 before losing it to the BJP in the 2021 polls.The BJP has fielded Hemanta Bag against the TMC’s Mita Bag to defend the constituency. NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party on Monday launched a broadside against Raghav Chadha after he drew a parallel between quitting the party and switching jobs, accusing him of hatching a conspiracy with the BJP.In a video shared on X, AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj said that even when someone changes jobs, they have to give a three-month notice.“I just saw a video of Raghav where he says that just like people change jobs or companies, he has changed his party. I want to say that when we change jobs or work in a company, it has nothing to do with ideology. You join and stay in a political party because of ideology. Still, I would say that if Raghav was not comfortable in that party, he had every right to leave. But even when you change jobs within a company, you give a three-month notice. You inform your employer that you are moving to a new company and take time to transfer your knowledge. Since you have worked there for years, it is your responsibility. When the ED tightened its grip on you, you decided to join the BJP, but you did not tell anyone. You entered into a conspiracy with the BJP. From day one, the BJP was part of this. The idea, as claimed, was to build an image of an independent, middle-class, youth leader raising issues, and the BJP would support it. How would they support it? Issues already in the central government’s pipeline—like cheaper food at airports, changes in mobile recharge rules by TRAI, paternity leave, or measures for gig workers like Zomato and Swiggy employees—would be flagged to Raghav. He would raise them, quick action would follow, and his popularity would grow, creating a ‘neutral’ image,” Bharadwaj said.“The central government always had the chance to publicly say these were already its initiatives, but it didn’t contradict him. Why? Because, as alleged, there was coordination between Raghav and the BJP. The government was helping build his image,” he added.This comes hours after Chadha addressed criticism surrounding his decision to join the BJP.In a video shared on Instagram, Raghav Chadha said he had been receiving a large number of messages following his announcement. “For the past three days, I have been getting a lot of messages from all of you. Most of you are giving me best wishes and congratulating me, while some want to know the reasons behind my decision,” he said.Chadha said he had devoted 15 years of his youth to the Aam Aadmi Party, describing himself as a founding member. “I didn’t come into politics to make my career. I became a founding member of a political party. I gave 15 years of my prime youth to this party with my blood, sweat and hard work,” he said.Responding to criticism that the exit was driven by pressure or fear, Chadha rejected the allegation. “We did not leave out of fear but because of disappointment, disenchantment and disgust,” he said.He further asserted that despite leaving AAP, he would continue his political engagement and public outreach. “I will continue to raise your problems with more energy and enthusiasm,” he said.Within 24 hours of announcing his exit from the Aam Aadmi Party and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha reportedly saw a sharp decline in his Instagram following, losing over 1 million followers—a number that later rose to nearly 2 million. NEW DELHI: For thousands of Indians living with heart failure, the biggest strain is not just the disease, but the cost of surviving it. A nationwide study has found that seven out of 10 patients have no financial protection, forcing families to pay almost entirely from their own pockets.Published in the journal Global Heart, the study led by Dr Panniyammakal Jeemon of SCTIMST, Thiruvananthapuram, analysed 1,859 patients across 21 tertiary hospitals in India between September 2019 and December 2022.It shows that over 90% of treatment expenses are borne directly by patients, exposing a deep gap in financial protection for chronic illnesses.The numbers reflect a harsh reality. On average, a patient spends more than ₹1 lakh a year on treatment. At the same time, incomes are falling — nearly one in three patients and over a third of households reported a drop in earnings after diagnosis.Doctors say income often drops as patients stop working and families cut back to provide care. About 38% face catastrophic spending and nearly one in six borrow or sell assets, with many cutting basic expenses. The burden is highest on rural, low-income and uninsured patients.Insurance offers some relief — but not enough. Schemes such as Ayushman Bharat provide coverage for hospitalisation, but gaps remain. Most schemes do not fully cover outpatient care, medicines and long-term follow-up — which form a major part of treatment in chronic conditions like heart failure. As a result, patients continue to spend heavily from their own pockets.“Heart failure care in India shows a clear gap between acute treatment and long-term management, driven by affordability, accessibility and availability,” said Dr Mohit Gupta, cardiologist at GTB Hospital. “Costs often force patients to cut medicines, delay follow-ups or skip tests. The biggest burden is repeated hospitalisation, not drugs. We frequently tailor treatment to what patients can afford. Insurance largely cover hospitalisation, but heart failure is a chronic outpatient disease, and gaps in covering medicines and follow-up care leave patients vulnerable. Expanding access to affordable drugs and structured follow-up can improve outcomes and reduce costs.”Dr Ambuj Roy, Prof in cardiology, AIIMS said that insurance schemes still favour one-time procedures over sustained care, while heart diseases demand long-term therapy. Even though newer drugs have improved survival and quality of life, most patients pay out of pocket, making heart failure treatment a significant financial burden.”Experts warn financial strain leads to delayed care and skipped medicines, worsening outcomes. – NEW DELHI: Police have registered an FIR against an unidentified person after a mazaar in the Chinour area of Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district was allegedly vandalised and a sacred cloth, or ‘chadar’, burnt, officials said on Monday.The incident, which came to light under the Sadar Bazar police station limits, triggered tension in the locality, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to trace those responsible.Superintendent of Police Saurabh Dixit told news agency PTI that burnt pieces of cloth were found at the spot during inspection. “It appears that someone removed the chadar offered at the mazaar and set it on fire. Besides, the iron mesh surrounding the shrine was found damaged,” he said.He said a complaint was lodged on Sunday, following which police registered a case against an unknown person and launched an investigation. “Police teams have been directed to identify and arrest the accused at the earliest,” he added.Mohammed Ahmed, also known as Chand Miyan, the caretaker of the shrine, said the site is frequented by people from different communities. “More Hindus than Muslims visit this mazaar. The police visited the spot after the incident.
