Wg Cdr Namansh Syal ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has offered condolences to the Indian Air Force and the family of the pilot who died in a crash during the Dubai Air Show, saying rivalry with the neighbouring country belongs “to the skies only.” A Tejas fighter jet of the Indian Air Force crashed in a ball of fire on Friday during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show killing the lone pilot, Wg Cdr Namansh Syal. “Pakistan Strategic Forum on the behalf of the whole nation offers sincere deep condolences to the Indian Air Force & to the family of the pilot of the Indian Air Force HAL LCA Tejas that crashed today at the Dubai Air Show 2025,” Asif said in an overnight message on X. Pakistan Strategic Forum is an agency of defence analysts from Pakistan and allied nations’ committees to provide tactical and military insights, according to the forum’s description on its X account. The minister sharing Forum’s message noted that “Unfortunately the IAF pilot wasn’t able to eject & hasn’t survived the crash.” The minister further clarified that rivalry with India’s air force was limited to skies. “Our rivalry belongs to the skies ONLY, & as per the teachings of Quran & Sunnah we do not celebrate any unfortunate incident,” he said, and ended the post with, “Over to the skies & beyond, RIP BRAVE HEART.” Asif’s message comes amid the strained ties after the conflict in May this year. NEW DELHI: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Wednesday said it has unearthed “clear links” between Chinese criminal enterprises and scam compounds in South East Asia and beyond, being used for transnational fraud operations that “steal billions of dollars, exploit crypto currency and mercilessly traffic in human beings”.FBI co-deputy director Andrew Bailey shared at a media briefing that the Chinese actors were currently assessed as “financially motivated” since “we have not uncovered evidence that indicates the scam compounds are operated or directed by members of the Chinese govt”.Counting Chinese criminal groups as part of the industrial-scale scam compound “eco-system”, Bailey said they operate through sophisticated transnational networks, moving “people, money, technology and illicit proceeds across Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and beyond”. “The organisations have demonstrated a remarkable ability to exploit weak governance, corruption and emerging technology to scale their criminal activities globally,” he added.FBI is using a strategic, intelligence-driven approach and prioritising investigation of major actors and scam centres in the region to identify the hidden networks that facilitate the scams, like the developers who create apps used to defraud victims and recruiters who recruit scam centre workers under false pretence and lure them into death bondage.Citing examples of Chinese criminal enterprises connected to scam compounds across the globe, Bailey said “Kings Romans and 14K triad have been active in the (South east Asia) region for many years and involved in a wide variety of criminal activities”. He said the FBI has been coordinating with law enforcement agencies across the world to dismantle these transnational, highly-organised criminal networks. “We recently worked with the Dubai police department, Royal Thai police and the Chinese ministry of public security in an investigation that led to the arrest of 276 individuals in the dismantlement of at least 9 different scam centres that they were using for cryptocurrency investment fraud scams”.Besides the cam compounds, Bailey identified nihilistic violent extremism and transnational narcotics trafficking as the two other top threats in South East Asia, with global impact. “As deputy director of FBI, my message for these criminal groups is ‘we know who you are, how you operate and together with our law enforcement allies, we will hunt you down and bring you to justice,” he stated. Every 15 days, bundles of fresh moringa leaves leave farms in Dharmapuri for Singapore and Dubai, bringing farmers a steady income that many say is more reliable than traditional crops.Farmers in the district, particularly in Palacode and surrounding villages, say exporters have begun buying directly from them and sending consignments overseas.“We sell the moringa for Rs 30 to Rs 50 per bundle and earn about Rs 70,000 per acre per month on average,” says R Kumar, a farmer from Gummanur. “We make profits of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh over a three-month cycle.”Exporters say the growing demand stems from moringa’s reputation as a superfood. Often referred to as the “miracle tree”, moringa is increasingly being used in health supplements, functional foods and nutrition programmes. Its leaves are said to be rich in protein, calcium, iron and antioxidants such as quercetin and chlorogenic acid and to contain all nine essential amino acids.“Moringa powder is in high demand abroad. And the quality of moringa from Dharmapuri is good,” says S Prakash, an exporter from Hosur.Officials say government support such as a 100% subsidy for drip irrigation systems, has helped expand cultivation. “Farmers can maintain regular yields while keeping costs low,” says a horticulture official. “Dharmapuri is emerging as a hub for moringa exports. The model here is being replicated in other districts to meet rising global demand.”Drip irrigation allows us to harvest regularly,” says M Rajendran, a farmer in Marandahalli. “We don’t have to worry anymore about having a steady income.”India met nearly 80% of global demand for moringa leaves. LUCKNOW: The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) has clarified in writing that the Hi-Tech Test Laboratory of Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (MVVNL), Lucknow, does not have accreditation or approved scope for testing smart meters under IS 16444 (Part 1 and Part 2), the standards that govern smart prepaid meters.The clarification comes amid a dispute over a May 14 official statement issued by the MVVNL laboratory, which claimed that the facility was technically competent to conduct acceptance testing of smart meters with reference to IS 13779, IS 14697 and IS 16444. The lab had also maintained that its NABL accreditation and calibrated testing facilities made it fully capable of carrying out such tests.However, responding to a complaint raised by Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad (UPRVUP), NABL stated that testing under IS 16444 (Part 1 and Part 2) is not covered under the accredited scope of the laboratory.“The consumer body has sought to probe the matter in detail, as the laboratory’s written statement could create confusion regarding the actual scope of its accreditation,” said Avadhesh Kumar Verma, the chairman of UPRVUP.The matter is already under the scrutiny of the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC). On May 21, the commission issued a notice to the managing director of MVVNL seeking clarification on allegations that smart prepaid meters were tested at the laboratory despite the absence of accreditation under IS 16444 standards.Sources said MVVNL is yet to submit its response to the regulator.“With NABL’s clarification now on record and UPERC awaiting an explanation, pressure is mounting on the utility over the claims made regarding smart meter testing,” added Verma.Get the latest India news and live updates.
