NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh Congress unit on Tuesday announced that none of its spokespersons will participate in TV debates with Ayodhya’s Hanuman Garhi Temple priest Raju Das, accusing him of abusing and threatening party spokesperson Kunwar Singh Nishad during a live debate.UP Congress media department chairman and former minister CP Rai said Das crossed “all limits of decency” during a debate on Doordarshan News on Monday.In a statement, the party alleged that Das used obscene and abusive language against Nishad, including abusing his mother and issuing threats.”The two women anchors of DD News who were part of the debate were also stunned, and the debate had to be stopped midway,” Rai said, describing the incident as “shameful and unforgivable”.The Congress also demanded an impartial examination of the original recording, video footage and digital evidence of the programme. 'Shameful': UP Congress to boycott TV debates with Ayodhya priest after spokesperson abused

H1N1 accounts for nearly 98% of Influenza A cases currently detected in India NEW DELHI: H1N1 infections are rising across the country, but there is no cause for panic as the virus circulating is the familiar H1N1 pdm09 strain that has become a seasonal influenza virus, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General Dr Rajiv Bahl said on Tuesday.H1N1 accounts for nearly 98% of Influenza A cases currently detected in India, while H3N2 accounts for only 2-3%, Bahl said. He stressed that the rise was consistent with the seasonal pattern of influenza and did not indicate a new or more dangerous strain.“Influenza is seasonal. It will keep coming every year,” Bahl said, stressing that the key concern should be a rise in severe cases, hospitalisations or deaths, rather than an increase in infections alone.He said it was too early to say whether the current rise had peaked. Viral infections typically rise, reach a peak, remain at a plateau and then decline, but the timing can vary by a few weeks.The surveillance network is testing samples from 73 sentinel hospitals for multiple respiratory viruses. The system includes testing for Influenza A and B, SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus and other respiratory pathogens. A wider network of 167 virus research and diagnostic laboratories also undertakes diagnostic testing.Bahl said there was no need to test everyone for influenza. Testing is mainly required for patients with severe disease, for whom the result can help guide treatment.Most influenza infections are self-limiting. While most healthy people recover with supportive care, older adults, young children, pregnant women and immunocompromised people face a higher risk of complications such as pneumonia. Antiviral medicines may be prescribed for severe or high-risk cases, while antibiotics have no role in treating viral influenza, he said.On vaccination, Bahl said there was no urgent need for the general population to take the seasonal flu vaccine. People aged above 65 and those who are immunocompromised could discuss vaccination with their doctors. During the meeting on “crime against children”, Congress MP Ajay Maken submitted a letter seeking a discussion on the alleged use of pellet guns and lathicharge against students during the Jantar Mantar protest NEW DELHI: Opposition MPs on Tuesday clashed with ruling party members during a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on home affairs over a demand to discuss alleged police excesses against students during the July 20 protest march, news agency ANI reported, citing sources.During the meeting on “crime against children”, Congress MP Ajay Maken submitted a letter seeking a discussion on the alleged use of pellet guns and lathicharge against students during the Jantar Mantar protest, sources told ANI.Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is also learnt to have raised the issue, sources added.Opposition MPs argued that several students injured in the lathicharge were minors and that the matter therefore fell within the broader scope of ‘Crime Against Children’.However, committee chairman Radha Mohan Das Agarwal rejected the demand, citing the Supreme Court’s decision to set up a high-level committee to examine allegations of police excesses as well as violence by protesters during the demonstrations.Sources told ANI that a heated exchange took place between a BJP and a Congress member during the meeting, leading the chairman to ask members to restrict the discussion to the listed agenda.This comes days after the Supreme Court constituted a five-member high-powered expert committee to conduct a fact-finding exercise into allegations of police excesses during the march.The committee comprises former Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice Ravi Shankar Jha, former Delhi high court Justice Shalinder Kaur, former CBI director Rishi Kumar Shukla and former Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi.Join conversationView All Comments →Share your thoughts in the commentsInsightfulAgreeDisagreeSkepticalConcerningPromisingWorth ReadingBig DevelopmentPost CommentBe respectful · TOI community guidelinesA bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana said the panel would examine grievances raised by both protesters and police authorities in connection with the demonstrations.The bench directed the HPEC to prioritise allegations of excessive use of force by police, violence by protesters, and alleged harassment and molestation of women protesters. NEW DELHI: Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday slammed Congress leader Pawan Khera for making “indecent comments” about him after he shared a video of himself swimming in Arunachal Pradesh.In a social media post on X, Rijiju reminded Khera that he has fought eight elections so far, while the Congress leader is a first-term MP, nominated to Rajya Sabha by his party.”You are a 1st term MP, nominated by your party in Rajya Sabha & I’ve fought 8 elections so far. That doesn’t give you the right to make indecent comments. I swim with my villagers to inspire my people & followers,” Rijiju said.”Rahul ji doesn’t exist in my mind when I’m with my people. But Congressis started commenting that I can’t swim like Rahul Ji. So, I responded since I don’t take training for activities. I’m a natural khiladi in our mighty rivers. Don’t be abusive needlessly all the time,” he added.Rijiju also took a dig at Khera over his spat with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying that he will report the Congress leader’s “indiscipline conduct” to Sarma.”Dear Pawan Khera, I’ll report to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma ji about your indiscipline conduct if you talk about half-naked swimming. NEW DELHI: Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday slammed Congress leader Pawan Khera for making “indecent comments” about him after he shared a video of himself swimming in Arunachal Pradesh.In a social media post on X, Rijiju reminded Khera that he has fought eight elections so far, while the Congress leader is a first-term MP, nominated to Rajya Sabha by his party.”You are a 1st term MP, nominated by your party in Rajya Sabha & I’ve fought 8 elections so far. That doesn’t give you the right to make indecent comments. I swim with my villagers to inspire my people & followers,” Rijiju said.”Rahul ji doesn’t exist in my mind when I’m with my people. But Congressis started commenting that I can’t swim like Rahul Ji. So, I responded since I don’t take training for activities. I’m a natural khiladi in our mighty rivers. Don’t be abusive needlessly all the time,” he added.Rijiju also took a dig at Khera over his spat with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying that he will report the Congress leader’s “indiscipline conduct” to Sarma.”Dear Pawan Khera, I’ll report to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma ji about your indiscipline conduct if you talk about half-naked swimming. Do you swim with full suit & coat?” Rijiju said.Rijiju’s reaction came after Khera said that leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has “gotten under BJP’s skin”, claiming that Rijiju “can’t even go for a half-naked swim without invoking Rahul Gandhi.””Imagine how badly Rahul Ji has gotten under the BJP’s skin. On one hand, Kiren Rijiju can’t even go for a half-naked swim without invoking Rahul Gandhi. On the other, senior citizen Giriraj Singhbjp has been reduced to calling himself a 74-year-old “new baby born”.””What have you done to all of them, Rahul ji?” he added.Earlier, Rijiju shared a video of himself swimming in the rivers of Arunachal Pradesh.”Never go to deep water, if you do not know swimming. Many people have drowned in the river.
