US envoy wraps up Ladakh visit, skips meeting Dalai Lama

SRINAGAR: US ambassador to India Sergio Gor Friday concluded his visit to Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with his much-speculated meeting with Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama not taking place. Delhi HC quashes ED proceedings, says agency cannot continue PMLA probe after closure of underlying FIR NEW DELHI: Delhi HC has taken a dim view of ED’s move to rely on a six-year-old case to continue proceedings even though the FIR forming the basis of the case was closed. Justice Anish Dayal observed that despite being aware that the original FIR stood closed, ED’s was attempting to “somehow preserve the existing ECIR” and retain the coercive powers under PMLA with respect to search, seizure, freezing and attachment of properties of the petitioners.”The conduct of the ED in this regard is found wanting and raises serious concerns,” the high court observed in a recent judgement.ED’s ECIR, registered in Dec 2021, arose from an FIR registered by Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in Feb 2021 over a dispute between two factions of the family of the late Mahendra Prasad, a former MP. The issue pertained to share transfers and bank transactions by a faction of the family on the basis of forged signatures of Prasad’s wife. SC eases civil judge eligibility from 3-year to 1-year practice, but mandates 2 years of training before judges can preside over courts NEW DELHI: The 20-year-old method for recruiting entry-level trial court judges underwent changes twice in one year as the Supreme Court on Friday relaxed mandatory three-year practice eligibility norm for advocates to apply for judicial officer posts to one-year practice but said they can preside over courts and decide cases only after a two year on-job training.The SC in 1993 had ordered that advocates with three-year practice alone would be eligible to take the tests for posts of civil judges and magistrates. But in 2002, the SC had reversed its decision allowing fresh law graduates to become entry level judicial officers. On getting selected, they will be designated as ‘Trainee Judicial Officers” and “shall undergo a compulsory period of one year of intensive training at the State Judicial Academy concerned” and will be paid a fixed emolument equivalent to half the salary of magistrates. After one year training, the trainee judicial officers would undergo one year structured law clerkship – six months with the principal district judge and the next six months will be with a sitting HC judge, who will give a report evaluating the performance and suitability of the trainee.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Omar Abdullah defends Rahul Gandhi’s protests, says opposition must hold govt accountable SRINAGAR: Jammu & Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah Friday backed Rahul Gandhi, saying it is the job of the leader of the opposition (LoP) to question the govt and hold it accountable. He said, “If the opposition leader does not question the opposition, then what is the use of him?”Speaking to reporters, he said questions are not raised when the leader of the opposition in Jammu & Kashmir, Sunil Sharma (BJP), “asks useless questions again and again. But when he does it, you enjoy it. When Gandhi does it, you ask why he is doing this.”He said the opposition should not be judged on different scales. “Gandhi is doing what the country expects from him. The job of the opposition leader is to seek answers from the govt and make the govt accountable. New Delhi: BJP Friday said Rahul Gandhi had orchestrated the “drama” of sitting on dharna in a police station as a diversionary ploy after Congress came under flak across the country over its stand on Vande Mataram.”Rahul manufactured this drama suddenly as a cover for his anti-national stand and to divert attention from this big embarrassment,” Union minister J P Nadda said, as the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha staged a sit-in at Parliament Street police station.”The country is again witnessing his cheap and diversionary politics,” Nadda said as he questioned the need for the protest when Supreme Court had taken cognisance of a batch of petitions alleging police excesses on July 20 and had constituted a five-member committee headed by a retired judge to look into the matter.”Does the leader of opposition have no faith in the judiciary?
