India’s medal hopes will be on the line on Day 5 of the BWF World Championships on Friday, with both remaining Indian pairs in action in the quarter-finals on Friday. After a mixed Day 4, India now has two strong contenders left in the tournament, with both matches scheduled on Court 1.Day 4 saw Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty fight back from a game down to beat Malaysia’s Junaidi Arif and Yap Roy King 21-23, 21-19, 21-17 and book their place in the men’s doubles quarter-finals. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also advanced, producing a convincing 21-16, 21-12 win over Japan’s seventh-seeded Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi.However, India’s singles campaign ended with PV Sindhu and Ayush Shetty bowing out. Sindhu pushed China’s Wang Zhi Yi to a deciding game before losing 11-21, 21-15, 17-21, while Ayush went down 19-21, 11-21 to Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan.
Treesa-Gayatri face top-four Chinese pair
The first Indian challenge on Day 5 comes from Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who face fourth seeds Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian of China in the women’s doubles quarter-finals.The Indians have enjoyed an impressive run so far and will be aiming to move into the semi-finals and closer to a maiden World Championships medal.The match is scheduled to begin at an estimated 1:50 PM IST on Court 1.
Sat-Chi take on world No. 3 pair
Later in the evening, fifth seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty face a major test against third-seeded Chinese pair Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang. The Indian duo will be looking to build on their hard-fought comeback win from Day 4 and secure a place in the semi-finals.Their quarter-final is expected to begin around 6:00 PM IST, also on Court 1.
