Rahul welcomes Jharkhand protest resolution NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday welcomed the consensus reached between Jharkhand students and the Hemant Soren led-state government, following which the students ended their hunger strike.Rahul said chief minister Hemant Soren and the Jharkhand government had chosen dialogue to resolve the issue, while the students had exercised restraint and made their concerns heard.”A consensus has been reached between the students of Jharkhand and the state government, and the students have ended their hunger strike – it was heartening to hear this news. Chief Minister Hemant Soren ji and the Jharkhand government chose the path of dialogue and arrived at a solution. The students exercised restraint and made their point heard,” Rahul said in a post on X.“This is the right way – when students raise questions, they should get answers,” he added.He said he stood with every student in the country and called for changes to the existing system to ensure students received the full reward for their hard work and had the right to fair competition.”We stand with every student in the country. And we will uproot and transform this recovery system – so that every student gets the full reward of their hard work and the right to fair competition. This system will change across the entire country – now a framework will be established that propels students forward, rather than holding them back,” Rahul added.The development comes a day after student leader Devendra Nath Mahto ended his 16-day hunger strike late Monday night after the Jharkhand government announced the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination and all examinations conducted by TDPL, describing the decision as a “huge victory for Jharkhand”.Mahto ended his fast in Ranchi in the presence of state ministers Dipika Pandey Singh and Irfan Ansari. He thanked Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, ministers and others who supported the students’ agitation.Chief Minister Hemant Soren said the decision was taken at a special Cabinet meeting after considering the concerns raised by the protesting students.“Today, we held a special Cabinet meeting to bring this matter to a conclusion. After considering all aspects and finding solutions to the issues, we have decided to cancel all examinations conducted by TDPL, the results published by TDPL, and the selection or participation of any candidates through TDPL. ‘Platoon-level weapon’ (IANS photo) NEW DELHI: The Bihar government has told the Supreme Court that a constable deployed during student protests in Siwan fired four rounds from an AK-47 only after he was “trapped and surrounded by protesters.”A video showing a policeman firing an AK-47 during the protests went viral, triggering widespread outrage and backlash.The Samrat Choudhary government said the firing was directed into the air and did not injure any protesters.The government’s response was filed before the apex court in connection with petitions alleging excessive police force during protests linked to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led student movement.According to the affidavit, the AK-47 incident took place on July 25 near JP Chowk in Siwan. Constable Abhishek Kumar was allegedly surrounded by protesters.The State said Kumar “got trapped in the crowd” and fired four rounds from his AK-47 “in the air” to deal with the situation. It maintained that no protester was injured in this firing.The government, however, said three protesters suffered minor firearm injuries during the police action that day. It clarified that the injuries were not caused by Kumar’s AK-47 firing and that the injured protesters were not present at the spot where he opened fire.The affidavit also mentioned another firing incident during the protests. Assistant Sub-Inspector Nilesh Kumar Singh allegedly fired two rounds from his 9mm pistol near Hathi Chowk to disperse the crowd.The Bihar government maintained that police exercised restraint during the protests and did not use disproportionate force.The state government said Kumar’s firing occurred only after he was surrounded by the crowd. ‘Platoon-level weapon’ (IANS photo) NEW DELHI: The Bihar government has told the Supreme Court that a constable deployed during student protests in Siwan fired four rounds from an AK-47 only after he was “trapped and surrounded by protesters.”A video showing a policeman firing an AK-47 during the protests went viral, triggering widespread outrage and backlash.The Samrat Choudhary government said the firing was directed into the air and did not injure any protesters.The government’s response was filed before the apex court in connection with petitions alleging excessive police force during protests linked to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led student movement.According to the affidavit, the AK-47 incident took place on July 25 near JP Chowk in Siwan. Constable Abhishek Kumar was allegedly surrounded by protesters.The State said Kumar “got trapped in the crowd” and fired four rounds from his AK-47 “in the air” to deal with the situation. It maintained that no protester was injured in this firing.The government, however, said three protesters suffered minor firearm injuries during the police action that day. It clarified that the injuries were not caused by Kumar’s AK-47 firing and that the injured protesters were not present at the spot where he opened fire.The affidavit also mentioned another firing incident during the protests. Assistant Sub-Inspector Nilesh Kumar Singh allegedly fired two rounds from his 9mm pistol near Hathi Chowk to disperse the crowd.The Bihar government maintained that police exercised restraint during the protests and did not use disproportionate force.The state government said Kumar’s firing occurred only after he was surrounded by the crowd. We have to consider this. They have a future ahead. Demonstrators stage a protest outside Jharkhand secretariat after cabinet decided to cancel the JSSC-CGL examination in Ranchi NEW DELHI: Around 2,000 successful candidates of the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission-Combined Graduate Level (JSSC-CGL) examination protested outside the Jharkhand Secretariat on Tuesday, fearing that the state government’s decision to cancel the exam could cost them their jobs.“Tell us our crime. Don’t throw us out,” one of the candidates said, as quoted by news agency PTI, capturing the anger and uncertainty among those who have already been appointed to government posts.The Jharkhand government on Monday night announced the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination and all recruitment tests conducted by outsourced agency TSR Data Processing Pvt Ltd (TDPL) since 2014, following sustained protests over alleged irregularities in government recruitment exams.While the decision was a key demand of the protesting job aspirants, it has triggered a fresh dispute with candidates who cleared the JSSC-CGL examination arguing that they should not be punished for alleged wrongdoing unless their individual involvement is established.Successful candidates demand CBI probeThe affected candidates said they do not oppose an investigation into alleged irregularities but want an opportunity to defend themselves. They are now also demanding a CBI probe into the examination process.Kaushal Kumar, an assistant section officer in the Jharkhand government, said the candidates had joined their posts after the recruitment process and court proceedings.“Tell us our crime. Don’t throw us out. We were appointed after a court order,” he said.Appealing to the government outside the Secretariat, Kumar added, “We have come with all documents. Don’t cancel it (exams). Probe it. Do a CBI probe or whatever investigation you deem fit, but please don’t do injustice to us.”The candidates had attempted to meet Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday night as he held a marathon meeting with his Cabinet colleagues on the demand to cancel recruitment examinations.The JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch has been leading the agitation for more than two weeks over alleged corruption and irregularities in job exams.Another appointee, Chanda Kumari, questioned whether successful candidates had been given a fair chance to present their case before the cancellation decision.“Democracy means that 100 guilty may be spared, but no innocent should be punished,” she said.Kumari, who said she comes from a poor background, said she had qualified the 14th JPSC examination and the Forest Range Officer mains examination through hard work.“We could not have bought all these jobs,” she said, rejecting the suggestion that all successful candidates had benefited from alleged malpractice.Candidates cite court scrutiny, fear age-bar problemThe candidates have pointed to previous judicial proceedings involving the recruitment process, saying the examination had already faced investigation and court scrutiny.They said the Jharkhand High Court, in a December judgment, rejected a demand for a CBI investigation and held that the existing Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe was adequate.They are now seeking a distinction between candidates accused of wrongdoing and those who secured appointments without any established misconduct.S K Singh, another protester, said many candidates had already waited years for the recruitment process to conclude and had joined government service after legal proceedings.“You cannot throw us out without any rhyme or reason,” he said.Kumar claimed that more than 500 successful candidates had even left Central government jobs after securing appointments in Jharkhand.“One resigned from a Level-6 central position, a job in the India Meteorological Department, to join a job here. Where would we go?” he said.Several candidates are now threatening further legal action and hunger strikes. They are particularly concerned that fresh recruitment may not offer a realistic alternative to those who have crossed the upper age limit for government jobs.Government defends cancellation, promises recruitment reformsThe state government has defended the cancellation as necessary to restore confidence in the recruitment system amid allegations of irregularities.Higher and technical education minister Sudivya Kumar said the successful candidates could seek legal recourse.JMM spokesperson Manoj Pandey acknowledged the candidates’ concerns and said the party was sympathetic to them.“We are sympathetic to them,” Pandey said, while maintaining that fresh vacancies would provide opportunities to deserving candidates. Demonstrators stage a protest outside Jharkhand secretariat after cabinet decided to cancel the JSSC-CGL examination in Ranchi NEW DELHI: Around 2,000 successful candidates of the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission-Combined Graduate Level (JSSC-CGL) examination protested outside the Jharkhand Secretariat on Tuesday, fearing that the state government’s decision to cancel the exam could cost them their jobs.“Tell us our crime. Don’t throw us out,” one of the candidates said, as quoted by news agency PTI, capturing the anger and uncertainty among those who have already been appointed to government posts.The Jharkhand government on Monday night announced the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination and all recruitment tests conducted by outsourced agency TSR Data Processing Pvt Ltd (TDPL) since 2014, following sustained protests over alleged irregularities in government recruitment exams.While the decision was a key demand of the protesting job aspirants, it has triggered a fresh dispute with candidates who cleared the JSSC-CGL examination arguing that they should not be punished for alleged wrongdoing unless their individual involvement is established.Successful candidates demand CBI probeThe affected candidates said they do not oppose an investigation into alleged irregularities but want an opportunity to defend themselves. They are now also demanding a CBI probe into the examination process.Kaushal Kumar, an assistant section officer in the Jharkhand government, said the candidates had joined their posts after the recruitment process and court proceedings.“Tell us our crime. Don’t throw us out. We were appointed after a court order,” he said.Appealing to the government outside the Secretariat, Kumar added, “We have come with all documents. Don’t cancel it (exams). Probe it. Do a CBI probe or whatever investigation you deem fit, but please don’t do injustice to us.”The candidates had attempted to meet Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday night as he held a marathon meeting with his Cabinet colleagues on the demand to cancel recruitment examinations.The JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch has been leading the agitation for more than two weeks over alleged corruption and irregularities in job exams.Another appointee, Chanda Kumari, questioned whether successful candidates had been given a fair chance to present their case before the cancellation decision.“Democracy means that 100 guilty may be spared, but no innocent should be punished,” she said.Kumari, who said she comes from a poor background, said she had qualified the 14th JPSC examination and the Forest Range Officer mains examination through hard work.“We could not have bought all these jobs,” she said, rejecting the suggestion that all successful candidates had benefited from alleged malpractice.Candidates cite court scrutiny, fear age-bar problemThe candidates have pointed to previous judicial proceedings involving the recruitment process, saying the examination had already faced investigation and court scrutiny.They said the Jharkhand High Court, in a December judgment, rejected a demand for a CBI investigation and held that the existing Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe was adequate.They are now seeking a distinction between candidates accused of wrongdoing and those who secured appointments without any established misconduct.S K Singh, another protester, said many candidates had already waited years for the recruitment process to conclude and had joined government service after legal proceedings.“You cannot throw us out without any rhyme or reason,” he said.Kumar claimed that more than 500 successful candidates had even left Central government jobs after securing appointments in Jharkhand.“One resigned from a Level-6 central position, a job in the India Meteorological Department, to join a job here. Where would we go?” he said.Several candidates are now threatening further legal action and hunger strikes. They are particularly concerned that fresh recruitment may not offer a realistic alternative to those who have crossed the upper age limit for government jobs.Government defends cancellation, promises recruitment reformsThe state government has defended the cancellation as necessary to restore confidence in the recruitment system amid allegations of irregularities.Higher and technical education minister Sudivya Kumar said the successful candidates could seek legal recourse.JMM spokesperson Manoj Pandey acknowledged the candidates’ concerns and said the party was sympathetic to them.“We are sympathetic to them,” Pandey said, while maintaining that fresh vacancies would provide opportunities to deserving candidates.
