Elon Musk recently told SpaceX employees that the company is now bullish into the artificial intelligence (AI) race and will be utilising a valuable resource for its models’ training: its own workers’ data. Musk told staff that the company’s internal information, including direct contributions from employees, will be used to train Grok, the AI developed by Musk’s xAI and absorbed by SpaceX earlier this year. In a report by Business Insider, the tech magnate explained in an all-hands meeting the plan to harness the company’s collective knowledge. Musk announced: “We’re going to be training Grok on the sum total of all SpaceX information, addressing the staff directly, adding, “So in a way, it will be trained on you.”Musk, who has frequently warned about the existential risks of superintelligent AI, framed this approach as a way to ensure the technology is built on human-centric values. The report says that by training Grok on data from SpaceX employees, whom Musk described as “some of the very best humans on Earth”, he believes the AI will inherit desirable traits. Musk told his team: “You will effectively be the parents of the AI. It will inherit your thoughts and ideas and beliefs, and I think that’s a good thing.”

The promise of Mars and the Moon

During the meeting, Musk encouraged all employees to use the internal AI tools and work to “make it better.” He predicted that dominating AI on Earth and in space would lead to immense profits and a “golden age” of civilization.“Anyone at SpaceX who wants to go to the moon or Mars will be able to go in the future. You have my word,” Musk vowed to his employees. This move comes at a time when tech giants are looking beyond the internet for high-quality data to build advanced AI “agents” capable of performing real-world tasks. As readily available data on the internet becomes exhausted, AI companies are increasingly turning to specialised sources, such as sensor logs, factory data, and employee usage patterns.
