NEW DELHI/DHAKA: India and Bangladesh are discussing a possible bilateral visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman late next week, official sources said. Though the visit has yet to be officially confirmed, Rahman is likely to travel to India between Aug 21 and 25, in what would be his first trip to the country after taking office.PM Narendra Modi had invited Rahman for a bilateral visit and followed it up with another invitation to the Bangladesh PM in the latter’s capacity as the BIMSTEC chair for the BRICS summit that India will host in Sept.The two sides seem to agree that the bilateral visit could be more significant in advancing efforts to reset ties, which remain strained over several issues, including extradition of former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina.According to diplomatic sources, other than Hasina, some of the issues that will likely weigh on Rahman’s mind while finalising his India trip include border management, domestic political optics, trade and visa normalisation, and water-sharing.For India, security concerns, including insurgent groups’ activities, protection of minorities and Dhaka’s potential tilt towards China and Pak, especially in defence and security, remain key issues.Ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, when asked about the proposed visit, said “We have extended an invitation to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for a bilateral visit. We’ve also extended an invitation to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for a visit to India for the outreach session of the BRICS Summit. It stole the sons of numerous mothers, crushed the dreams of numerous mothers,” PM Modi said in his Independence Day address.He also alleged that people with a Maoist mindset had earlier occupied positions of influence in government committees and policymaking.“For years, people with Maoist thinking were there in public life, even in government committees this thinking had affected various institutions and initiatives,” PM Modi said, before calling for the “dimagi naxal” to be identified and isolated.Congress attacks PM Modi’s ‘dimagi naxal’ remarkChidambaram’s response came a day after Congress had already attacked PM Modi over the remarks.Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh accused the Prime Minister of reviving the “urban naxal” label to target political opponents. He argued that the government had previously used the term despite Union home minister Amit Shah clarifying in Parliament that there was no official definition of “urban Naxal”.Ramesh also alleged that the government eventually adopted some of the issues raised by people it had labelled “urban Naxals”. He cited the caste census as an example, saying the idea had earlier been dismissed as reflecting “urban Naxal” thinking before the government announced a caste-based census.“First, you make derogatory remarks–calling them ‘Urban Naxals’ or ‘Mental Naxals’–but later, you accept the very demands your political opponents were making,” Ramesh said, according to news agency ANI.The Congress leader had also earlier called PM Modi a “master abuser” in “Entire Political Science” while reacting to his use of the “urban naxal” and “dimagi naxal” labels.The broader Opposition has also criticised PM Modi’s remarks. NEW DELHI: Congress lashed out at PM Narendra Modi Saturday over his remarks on “dimagi Naxals”, calling it a sign of desperation.Congress’ RS MP Jairam Ramesh said, “First he called his opponents ‘urban naxals.’ Now he calls them ‘dimagi naxals.’ It is a sure sign of his desperation. It is a separate matter that he ends up doing whatever these so-called ‘urban naxals’ or now ‘dimagi naxals’ are demanding or advocating.” Ramesh later said two or three years ago, the PM had dubbed his political opponents “urban Naxals”.”A question was then asked in Parliament on the definition of urban Naxals, and the home minister said there is no definition of urban Naxals. Today, the PM is calling his political opponents ‘dimagi Naxals’ from the Red Fort. Two years ago, he had said the demand for a caste census was urban Naxals’ thought.
