NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has accused the Congress of being responsible for India’s Partition and the violence that followed, arguing that the country’s history could have been different under leaders such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel or Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Speaking at an event in Lucknow marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, CM Yogi said the Congress had failed the country by prioritising political power and alleged that the consequences of Partition continue to affect India.“Had Narendra Modi been the Prime Minister of India at the time of Independence, nobody would have been able to damage India in the slightest,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.He also invoked Patel, saying that a leader of his stature would not have allowed India to be divided.“If a person like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel were the Prime Minister at that time, nobody would have been able to disintegrate India … The country had to pay a heavy price for the cowardice of these Congress members — a character you all witnessed during the CAA protests,” he added.Adityanath alleged that areas including Sindh, Punjab and Bengal were handed over to Pakistan despite what he described as their Hindu and regional demographic character.“Bengal was Bengali-dominated. All Hindu villages were forcibly given to Bangladesh. This shameful act was committed by the Congress, which was extra-restless for power, and on whom the country had reposed its trust. It repaid that trust with betrayal,” he said.The chief minister also criticised the Congress over its response to attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. He alleged that the party remained silent because it was concerned about losing electoral support.“They feared that reacting to the events in Bangladesh might cause their vote bank here to drift away. To them, the murder of Dalit Hindus holds no significance; what matters is their own vote bank,” he said.Adityanath further argued that internal divisions based on caste, region and language had historically weakened India and created opportunities for outside forces.“When such infighting exists, then conspiracy easily creeps in,” he said.He said the consequences of Partition could still be seen in the form of terrorism, Naxalism, Maoism and extremism. He also questioned the Congress’s claims about its role in India’s freedom struggle and accused the party of presenting itself as indispensable to the creation of modern India.“This also draws our attention to the silence we have all maintained regarding that pre-1947 conspiracy. Yet, even today, these people move before society, acting as if they were the ones who created India, and that without them, India would not have come into existence. It is a truly strange situation,” he said, describing Partition as the “darkest chapter of humanity.”Turning to what he described as the Congress’s political legacy, Adityanath said institutions across the country had been named after one political family.“Every institution in the country came to bear the name of that very clan. Every single institution was named after that clan, and we all stood by silently, merely watching. What are they doing even today? What are their actions like now?” he said.The UP chief minister also defended the Citizenship Amendment Act and attacked the Congress’s opposition to it.“There was no justification for opposing the act. The act contained a provision regarding Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh — territories that were once part of undivided India and share a heritage spanning thousands of years. It stipulated that if a Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, or Christian from these countries had been forced to leave and had sought refuge in India for five years, they would be granted Indian citizenship,” he said.He argued that the legislation did not provide for taking away land or property from Muslims or political parties, and accused opponents of using the issue to provoke protests.“Nowhere did it say that we would seize land belonging to Muslims, the Congress, or the Samajwadi Party. There was no such provision in the Act. Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh was attacked outside a West Bengal police station. He was arrested in RG Kar victim’s ‘hurried’ cremation case. NEW DELHI: Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh, arrested in connection with the alleged “hurried cremation” of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, was attacked by a mob outside Khardah Police Station in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Friday.Ghosh, who was arrested in Odisha a day earlier, was being escorted to a prison van to be produced before the Barrackpore sub-divisional court when the crowd broke through the security cordon and attacked him with blows and kicks. Protesters also threw footwear, eggs and muck at the former MLA.Police and RAF personnel formed a tight cordon around Ghosh and placed a helmet over his head to shield him from the assault. By the time he was taken to the court lock-up, stains of egg and muck were visible on his white kurta.The former TMC MLA also faced protests at Barrackpore court, where a group of people waiting outside shouted “chor, chor” as police rushed him inside.Another accused in the case, former Panihati municipality councillor Sanjib Mukherjee, was also confronted by protesters while being escorted to the vehicle. Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh was attacked outside a West Bengal police station. He was arrested in RG Kar victim’s ‘hurried’ cremation case. NEW DELHI: Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh, arrested in connection with the alleged “hurried cremation” of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, was attacked by a mob outside Khardah Police Station in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Friday.Ghosh, who was arrested in Odisha a day earlier, was being escorted to a prison van to be produced before the Barrackpore sub-divisional court when the crowd broke through the security cordon and attacked him with blows and kicks. Protesters also threw footwear, eggs and muck at the former MLA.Police and RAF personnel formed a tight cordon around Ghosh and placed a helmet over his head to shield him from the assault. By the time he was taken to the court lock-up, stains of egg and muck were visible on his white kurta.The former TMC MLA also faced protests at Barrackpore court, where a group of people waiting outside shouted “chor, chor” as police rushed him inside.Another accused in the case, former Panihati municipality councillor Sanjib Mukherjee, was also confronted by protesters while being escorted to the vehicle. Surrendered women naxals walk on the ramp during a participation in a Tribal fashion show programme. NEW DELHI: For nine women from Chhattisgarh’s Naxal-affected Bastar region, the stage in Raipur offered a strikingly different kind of experience. Once part of an armed insurgency, they recently walked the ramp in handloom outfits at a National Handloom Day event, as part of efforts to help surrendered Naxalites rebuild their lives.The women, all from Sukma, took part in a Swadeshi fashion show organised as part of rehabilitation efforts for former Naxalites.Sukma SP Mayank Gurjar said the event also gave them an opportunity to promote Swadeshi products.For some of the women, the experience was unlike anything they had done before. One former Naxalite, who had worked with the Pamed Area Committee, said she surrendered in 2026 and travelled to Raipur for six days of training before taking part in the programme.”I used to work in the Pamed Area Committee. I surrendered in 2026. We went to Raipur recently. There, we were trained by people who had come from Bombay…prominent ministers also came. The training was of six days…it was the first time we did something like that…we enjoyed it,” the former Naxalite told news agency ANI.Another participant, Poonam Devi, said her journey with the Naxalite movement had begun in November 2007. She surrendered on July 12, 2025, bringing that chapter of her life to an end.”I surrendered on July 12, 2025. I liked the program…we were trained for it…I joined the Naxals in November 2007 and left in 2025,” she said.According to Gurjar, the women’s participation reflects the opportunities being offered under the rehabilitation policies of the Central and Chhattisgarh governments to those who surrender and choose to return to mainstream society.”As you all know, through the rehabilitation policy of the Government of India and the Chhattisgarh Government, various benefits and advantages are being provided to surrendered Naxalites. In that context, on National Handloom Day, nine surrendered women who had surrendered in Sukma participated in a Swadeshi fashion show,” he said.The nine women had held different positions within the Naxalite organisation. Some were associated with the Pamed Area Committee, while others had served as gunners for senior Naxalite commanders in Battalion Number 1. One had worked as a school teacher within the organisation, according to the SP.”Among the nine surrendered women, some were working in the Pamed Area Committee. Some worked as gunners for major Naxalite commanders in Battalion Number 1. One of the surrendered women Naxalites was working as a teacher in a school,” Gurjar said.Their past also included handling weapons. CJI Surya Kant rebukes BCI over NALSAR enrolment ban, says students have right to protest peacefully. NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday strongly disapproved of the Bar Council of India’s now-revoked decision to stop enrolment of 2026 graduates of Hyderabad’s NALSAR University of Law as advocates after students opposed his invitation as chief guest for the university’s convocation. The Supreme Court said students had a right to protest peacefully and stayed any coercive action against NALSAR students or faculty by the BCI or state Bar Councils.”If students are protesting peacefully, who is BCI to take action? It is the right of the students to protest peacefully. It is a dialogue between students and me. No one else has to step in,” the CJI said.The bench, comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, said the BCI’s action was “absolutely uncalled for”. The court posted the matter for hearing after two weeks.Also read: ‘Uncalled for’: CJI pulls up Bar Council of India over threat of action against NALSAR studentsThe controversy began after a section of NALSAR students urged the university to reconsider inviting CJI Kant as chief guest for its upcoming convocation. The students had cited his reported remarks during a hearing on alleged police excesses against protesters during the July 20 march to Parliament.How the NALSAR row beganAt least six representations were submitted to the NALSAR administration from students of different batches, with the first being submitted on July 23. The students objected to the proposed invitation and referred to remarks attributed to the CJI during the hearing.One of the representations cited his response to an offer to show videos of the alleged police action: “We are not interested in videos; we don’t have time to watch.” The letter also quoted him as telling counsel: “Don’t waste our time, and don’t waste your time”.The students argued that inviting the CJI conflicted with the university’s stated commitment to constitutional rights and access to justice.Also read: NALSAR students oppose CJI Surya Kant as convocation chief guest”A convocation is meant to be a moment where the University’s own values, including a commitment to constitutional rights, access to justice, and reasoned engagement with grievances, are visibly reflected in the choices it makes. We feel that receiving our degrees from a dignitary whose recent public conduct, as reported, appears dismissive of serious allegations of police brutality against protesting citizens sits uncomfortably with what we have been taught to value during our time at NALSAR.”Five subsequent representations from different batches supported the concerns raised in the initial letter. Students claimed that hundreds had backed the representations, although the numbers could not be independently verified.”We respect the CJI’s position. But we have been taught the Constitution and constitutional values, and we don’t want to support something that goes against those values,” a student who was also part of the Student Bar Council told TOI.BCI threatens to block enrolmentThe issue escalated on Thursday when BCI chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra directed state Bar Councils not to enrol NALSAR’s 2026 law graduates as advocates until further orders.Also read: BCI bars Nalsar students over CJI Surya Kant protest, retractsThe BCI sought a factual report from NALSAR on those who had allegedly initiated, organised or mobilised the campaign against CJI Kant’s participation in the convocation.“Till further orders, no student of Nalsar University of Law, who has obtained law degree in the year 2026, shall be enrolled by any state bar council as an advocate.”Mishra said the final decision would be taken on August 19 after receiving a report from the university’s vice-chancellor. He also asked NALSAR to distinguish between students who merely signed or supported representations and those who organised or coordinated the campaign or proposed an actual boycott.The BCI’s initial letter also said, “A student of Law, having no regard or respect for the highest judicial office of the country, is not expected to be a responsible or sensible advocate, teacher or a judge. Such persons shall always be a liability on the profession. Such conduct reflects adversely upon the person’s suitability for entry into or association with the legal profession and is inconsistent with the dignity, discipline and ethical standards of the legal profession.”The council further alleged that some academic staff had been involved in “misleading, instigating and misguiding” students.“As per some reliable sources, there exists groupism and dirty politics among some of the academic staff and they have played a very active role in misleading, instigating and misguiding the students. This is a very serious matter. The teachers, instead of involving themselves in their teaching job, are doing nasty politics in the campus. CJI Surya Kant rebukes BCI over NALSAR enrolment ban, says students have right to protest peacefully. NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday strongly disapproved of the Bar Council of India’s now-revoked decision to stop enrolment of 2026 graduates of Hyderabad’s NALSAR University of Law as advocates after students opposed his invitation as chief guest for the university’s convocation. The Supreme Court said students had a right to protest peacefully and stayed any coercive action against NALSAR students or faculty by the BCI or state Bar Councils.”If students are protesting peacefully, who is BCI to take action? It is the right of the students to protest peacefully. It is a dialogue between students and me. No one else has to step in,” the CJI said.The bench, comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, said the BCI’s action was “absolutely uncalled for”. The students had cited his reported remarks during a hearing on alleged police excesses against protesters during the July 20 march to Parliament.How the NALSAR row beganAt least six representations were submitted to the NALSAR administration from students of different batches, with the first being submitted on July 23. The students objected to the proposed invitation and referred to remarks attributed to the CJI during the hearing.One of the representations cited his response to an offer to show videos of the alleged police action: “We are not interested in videos; we don’t have time to watch.” The letter also quoted him as telling counsel: “Don’t waste our time, and don’t waste your time”.The students argued that inviting the CJI conflicted with the university’s stated commitment to constitutional rights and access to justice.Also read: NALSAR students oppose CJI Surya Kant as convocation chief guest”A convocation is meant to be a moment where the University’s own values, including a commitment to constitutional rights, access to justice, and reasoned engagement with grievances, are visibly reflected in the choices it makes. We feel that receiving our degrees from a dignitary whose recent public conduct, as reported, appears dismissive of serious allegations of police brutality against protesting citizens sits uncomfortably with what we have been taught to value during our time at NALSAR.”Five subsequent representations from different batches supported the concerns raised in the initial letter. Students claimed that hundreds had backed the representations, although the numbers could not be independently verified.”We respect the CJI’s position. But we have been taught the Constitution and constitutional values, and we don’t want to support something that goes against those values,” a student who was also part of the Student Bar Council told TOI.BCI threatens to block enrolmentThe issue escalated on Thursday when BCI chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra directed state Bar Councils not to enrol NALSAR’s 2026 law graduates as advocates until further orders.Also read: BCI bars Nalsar students over CJI Surya Kant protest, retractsThe BCI sought a factual report from NALSAR on those who had allegedly initiated, organised or mobilised the campaign against CJI Kant’s participation in the convocation.“Till further orders, no student of Nalsar University of Law, who has obtained law degree in the year 2026, shall be enrolled by any state bar council as an advocate.”Mishra said the final decision would be taken on August 19 after receiving a report from the university’s vice-chancellor. He also asked NALSAR to distinguish between students who merely signed or supported representations and those who organised or coordinated the campaign or proposed an actual boycott.The BCI’s initial letter also said, “A student of Law, having no regard or respect for the highest judicial office of the country, is not expected to be a responsible or sensible advocate, teacher or a judge. Such persons shall always be a liability on the profession. Such conduct reflects adversely upon the person’s suitability for entry into or association with the legal profession and is inconsistent with the dignity, discipline and ethical standards of the legal profession.”The council further alleged that some academic staff had been involved in “misleading, instigating and misguiding” students.“As per some reliable sources, there exists groupism and dirty politics among some of the academic staff and they have played a very active role in misleading, instigating and misguiding the students. This is a very serious matter. The teachers, instead of involving themselves in their teaching job, are doing nasty politics in the campus.
