(File photo) NEW DELHI: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was injured after being attacked at a gurdwara in Maharashtra’s Nanded on Thursday. The assailant, identified as 62-year-old Jaspal Singh, had been staying at the same gurdwara for the past two years.According to police, the attack took place when Badal was visiting Mata Sahib Gurdwara in the Hazur Sahib area. The attacker, a Nihang Sikh, allegedly tried to stab the Akali Dal leader in the stomach, news agency IANS reported quoting sources.Security personnel accompanying Badal intervened immediately and overpowered the attacker before he could inflict more serious injuries.Police later identified the accused as Jaspal Singh, son of Teja Singh and a resident of Solapur Bazaar in Pune. Investigators said he had been residing at Mata Sahib Gurdwara for the last two years.Badal sustained an injury to his hand and was rushed to Yasho Sai Hospital in Nanded for treatment. Officials said that he received stitches on his hand and is in stable condition.Inspector Santosh Kendre of the Maharashtra Police’s Special Protection Unit (SPU), who was deployed for Badal’s security, was also injured while trying to stop the attacker.The SPU is a specialised unit tasked with providing security to VVIPs during their visits and movements.Badal was accompanied by his wife, SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, during his visit to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib. Because, for the first time, they are feeling India’s expression…”Gandhi said the Congress would seek to challenge what he described as the BJP’s attempt to impose a particular political order on the country.“What was happening at Jantar Mantar is that students want to express themselves. They are in pain, and they want to express themselves, and the government says no. We are going to create order at Jantar Mantar. You cannot express yourselves,” he said.“So their job and their political philosophy is to impose an order on India, an order that benefits them and certain other people. And our job is to make India express itself and break that order,” Gandhi added.He was referring to the protests at Jantar Mantar over the NEET-UG paper leak. The CJP-led protest ended after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as education minister, while opposition parties in Parliament demanded a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on the alleged police action against protesters.Gandhi also attacked the RSS, saying the organisation did not understand contemporary India. “I can understand if you are fighting the British Empire and suddenly you say, I’m feeling a bit scared. But you’re fighting a bunch of jokers. How can you feel scared? You’re literally fighting a bunch of jokers, clowns who have no idea about our philosophy, no idea about our history. I can naturally say this about my friends in the RSS. It’s obvious to me,” he said.“In fact, it’s obvious to most people that these people have no understanding of India. Why? Because somebody who cannot connect with India as it is today cannot understand India. To understand India, you can’t understand India 3,000 years ago. You have to understand it today, right now. And to understand it today, the only way to understand it today is to understand its expression,” he added.Rahul attacks govt over Iran war, ChinaThe LoP also criticised the government’s foreign policy, referring to the war in Iran and India’s ties with the US, Russia and Iran.“War broke out in Iran. For India—had it recognized its own strength and had its leader been someone like Indira Gandhi—this presented the greatest opportunity in the world,” he said.“What kind of opportunity? Iran was our old friend, America was our friend, and Russia was our friend. We could have stepped up, become relevant, and leveraged these friendships. But what actually happened? Nothing of the sort. Instead, Pakistan stepped in and took our place; Pakistan became the mediator, while India and Modi-ji simply looked on,” Gandhi claimed.He also alleged that the government was suppressing information about India’s border situation with China.“Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Narendra Modi have been completely deflated. They are calling up all the media editors, telling them, ‘Don’t publish this in your newspapers; suppress the story.’ They are causing direct harm to the country without a second thought,” he alleged.Gandhi further referred to the government’s response after the Galwan clash and claimed that India’s position had weakened its negotiations with China.“After the Galwan incident, the Prime Minister held a meeting—a Zoom call. He stated that China hadn’t taken a single inch of Indian territory. The Army said that our land had been taken. Just think about the message sent to China: Chinese negotiators asked our negotiators, ‘What nonsense are you talking about? Your own Prime Minister said no land was lost.’”He alleged that the government’s foreign-policy decisions were ultimately driven by political funding, adding, “And they did all of this solely to finance their political structure, to secure funds from Adani ji.”Rahul also criticised what he described as the government’s approach to diplomacy, saying foreign policy could not be reduced to personal relationships between leaders.“I don’t know where it came from; this idea got into their heads. SC gave the government two weeks to take a final call on introducing warning labels for packaged foods. NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Thursday sharply criticised the Centre and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) over the delay in introducing front-of-pack warning labels for packaged food products high in sugar, salt and saturated fat, warning that it would issue directions if the government failed to take a final decision.A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran gave the Centre two weeks to place its final decision on record, making it clear that the government could either implement the proposed warning labels on its own or face judicial intervention.”This is your last chance. Next time we will dictate the judgment,” the bench said, according to ANI.The court repeatedly underlined that the issue was one of public health, particularly the health of children and questioned the government’s reluctance to move ahead with stronger nutritional warnings.”Why? You don’t want people of this country to remain healthy? More particularly growing children?” the bench asked during the hearing.Appearing for the Centre, additional solicitor general Brijender Chahar argued that applying strict warning standards could create complications for traditional Indian food items. He said products such as namkeen could end up carrying red warning symbols because of their fat or salt content.He also argued that international nutritional standards might not be directly applicable to Indian dietary habits, pointing out that even two eggs could exceed the prescribed daily fat limit.The court, however, was unconvinced.The bench said consumers were already aware that packaged foods contained sugar, fat and carbohydrates, but front-of-pack warning labels would provide a simpler and more effective way of communicating nutritional risks before a purchase was made.The judges also rejected the argument that warning labels could adversely affect manufacturers.According to ANI, the bench observed that the final decision to purchase a product would continue to rest with consumers and that commercial considerations could not take precedence over public health.During the proceedings, senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for a manufacturer, attempted to make submissions. The court responded by stating that the case concerned the health of citizens and that manufacturers could not determine government policy on the issue.Senior advocate Devadutt Kamat suggested that food products could be categorised differently and that detailed nutritional information should be displayed.The bench clarified that it was not opposed to any particular food product but was only seeking greater consumer awareness.”In this country, how many people can afford dry fruits? And how many children buy Kurkure? That makes all the difference. We are not against any particular product. We only want the person purchasing it to know what he is consuming,” the court said, according to ANI.The bench also referred to its February 10, 2026, order, in which it had previously addressed the issue and laid down its observations.During Thursday’s hearing, the petitioner’s counsel drew the court’s attention to the minutes of an FSSAI meeting held on March 7, which allegedly reflected a position contrary to the suggestions made by the court earlier.The judges also took exception to the Centre’s argument that India could not easily adopt international standards relating to nutritional warnings.”We do not approve the stance of the Union when it says that it’s not possible to match the international standards, more particularly developed countries. On December 4, 2024, Badal was attacked inside the Golden Temple during a penance ordered by the Akal Takht. NEW DELHI: Sukhbir Singh Badal’s Thursday attack in Nanded marks the second serious attempt on the Shiromani Akali Dal leader’s life. The SAD leader was also attacked two years ago at the Golden Temple when a gunman opened fire at him while Badal was serving religious punishment at the shrine.On December 4, 2024, Badal was attacked at the entrance of the temple, where he was seated in a wheelchair because of his fractured leg, during a penance ordered by the Akal Takht. Video footage from the incident shows the moment the attacker overpowered him within seconds.The footage showed him dressed in a blue sewadar uniform. He was stationed at the temple entrance as part of the punishment pronounced by the Akal Takht over alleged misconduct during his tenure from 2007 to 2017.As Badal sat with a placard around his neck, a man who was later identified as Narayan Singh Chaura approached him and opened fire. The attempt, however, was foiled almost immediately.In the clip, right after the gunman pulled out the weapon, an alert sewadar, believed to be a volunteer associated with an Akali leader, intervened and pushed the assailant’s arm upward as he attempted to fire. The bullet was discharged harmlessly into the air, and the attacker was quickly overpowered by volunteers and others present at the scene. NEW DELHI: Air India group has from Thursday started ‘mandatory substance screening’ for all pilots following the Phuket-Delhi flight serious incident. The move comes to “protect and sustain” the trust AI had earned over the decades that has been shaken by the pilot-in-command of the Phuket flight testing positive for marijuana. Aviation secretary Samir Sinha had in clear terms asked AI to “take responsibility” and do whatever it takes to ensure safety.AI senior VP (flight operations) captain Manish Uppal wrote to all pilots on Thursday: “For decades, Air India has been the flag bearer of Indian aviation. Over this time the professionalism, skill and commitment to safety of our pilots, together with other staff, has earned the trust of millions of passengers and the wider community. This trust is our most important asset, and it is vital that we do all possible to protect and sustain it. Many of you have recently reached out to share the same sentiment.”“As you know, Air India already fully complies with all regulatory requirements prescribed by India’s DGCA, which are similar to those practiced in other major aviation jurisdictions including Europe and the US.
