NEW DELHI: Air India group has from Thursday started ‘mandatory substance screening’ for all pilots following the Phuket-Delhi flight serious incident. The move comes to “protect and sustain” the trust AI had earned over the decades that has been shaken by the pilot-in-command of the Phuket flight testing positive for marijuana. Aviation secretary Samir Sinha had in clear terms asked AI to “take responsibility” and do whatever it takes to ensure safety.AI senior VP (flight operations) captain Manish Uppal wrote to all pilots on Thursday: “For decades, Air India has been the flag bearer of Indian aviation. Over this time the professionalism, skill and commitment to safety of our pilots, together with other staff, has earned the trust of millions of passengers and the wider community. This trust is our most important asset, and it is vital that we do all possible to protect and sustain it. NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Thursday sharply criticised the Centre and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) over the delay in introducing front-of-pack warning labels for packaged food products high in sugar, salt and saturated fat, warning that it would issue directions if the government failed to take a final decision.A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran gave the Centre two weeks to place its final decision on record, making it clear that the government could either implement the proposed warning labels on its own or face judicial intervention.”This is your last chance. Next time we will dictate the judgment,” the bench said, according to ANI.The court repeatedly underlined that the issue was one of public health, particularly the health of children and questioned the government’s reluctance to move ahead with stronger nutritional warnings.”Why? You don’t want people of this country to remain healthy? More particularly growing children?” the bench asked during the hearing.Appearing for the Centre, additional solicitor general Brijender Chahar argued that applying strict warning standards could create complications for traditional Indian food items. He said products such as namkeen could end up carrying red warning symbols because of their fat or salt content.He also argued that international nutritional standards might not be directly applicable to Indian dietary habits, pointing out that even two eggs could exceed the prescribed daily fat limit.The court, however, was unconvinced.The bench said consumers were already aware that packaged foods contained sugar, fat and carbohydrates, but front-of-pack warning labels would provide a simpler and more effective way of communicating nutritional risks before a purchase was made.The judges also rejected the argument that warning labels could adversely affect manufacturers.According to ANI, the bench observed that the final decision to purchase a product would continue to rest with consumers and that commercial considerations could not take precedence over public health.During the proceedings, senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for a manufacturer, attempted to make submissions. The court responded by stating that the case concerned the health of citizens and that manufacturers could not determine government policy on the issue.Senior advocate Devadutt Kamat suggested that food products could be categorised differently and that detailed nutritional information should be displayed.The bench clarified that it was not opposed to any particular food product but was only seeking greater consumer awareness.”In this country, how many people can afford dry fruits? And how many children buy Kurkure? That makes all the difference. We are not against any particular product. We only want the person purchasing it to know what he is consuming,” the court said, according to ANI.The bench also referred to its February 10, 2026, order, in which it had previously addressed the issue and laid down its observations.During Thursday’s hearing, the petitioner’s counsel drew the court’s attention to the minutes of an FSSAI meeting held on March 7, which allegedly reflected a position contrary to the suggestions made by the court earlier.The judges also took exception to the Centre’s argument that India could not easily adopt international standards relating to nutritional warnings.”We do not approve the stance of the Union when it says that it’s not possible to match the international standards, more particularly developed countries. (File photo) NEW DELHI: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was injured after being attacked at a gurdwara in Maharashtra’s Nanded on Thursday. The assailant, identified as 62-year-old Jaspal Singh, had been staying at the same gurdwara for the past two years.According to police, the attack took place when Badal was visiting Mata Sahib Gurdwara in the Hazur Sahib area. The attacker, a Nihang Sikh, allegedly tried to stab the Akali Dal leader in the stomach, news agency IANS reported quoting sources.Security personnel accompanying Badal intervened immediately and overpowered the attacker before he could inflict more serious injuries.Police later identified the accused as Jaspal Singh, son of Teja Singh and a resident of Solapur Bazaar in Pune. Investigators said he had been residing at Mata Sahib Gurdwara for the last two years.Badal sustained an injury to his hand and was rushed to Yasho Sai Hospital in Nanded for treatment. Officials said that he received stitches on his hand and is in stable condition.Inspector Santosh Kendre of the Maharashtra Police’s Special Protection Unit (SPU), who was deployed for Badal’s security, was also injured while trying to stop the attacker.The SPU is a specialised unit tasked with providing security to VVIPs during their visits and movements.Badal was accompanied by his wife, SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, during his visit to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib. (File photo) NEW DELHI: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was injured after being attacked at a gurdwara in Maharashtra’s Nanded on Thursday. The assailant, identified as 62-year-old Jaspal Singh, had been staying at the same gurdwara for the past two years.According to police, the attack took place when Badal was visiting Mata Sahib Gurdwara in the Hazur Sahib area. The attacker, a Nihang Sikh, allegedly tried to stab the Akali Dal leader in the stomach, news agency IANS reported quoting sources.Security personnel accompanying Badal intervened immediately and overpowered the attacker before he could inflict more serious injuries.Police later identified the accused as Jaspal Singh, son of Teja Singh and a resident of Solapur Bazaar in Pune. Investigators said he had been residing at Mata Sahib Gurdwara for the last two years.Badal sustained an injury to his hand and was rushed to Yasho Sai Hospital in Nanded for treatment. Officials said that he received stitches on his hand and is in stable condition.Inspector Santosh Kendre of the Maharashtra Police’s Special Protection Unit (SPU), who was deployed for Badal’s security, was also injured while trying to stop the attacker.The SPU is a specialised unit tasked with providing security to VVIPs during their visits and movements.Badal was accompanied by his wife, SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, during his visit to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib. The SAD leader was also attacked two years ago at the Golden Temple when a gunman opened fire at him while Badal was serving religious punishment at the shrine.On December 4, 2024, Badal was attacked at the entrance of the temple, where he was seated in a wheelchair because of his fractured leg, during a penance ordered by the Akal Takht. Video footage from the incident shows the moment the attacker overpowered him within seconds.The footage showed him dressed in a blue sewadar uniform. He was stationed at the temple entrance as part of the punishment pronounced by the Akal Takht over alleged misconduct during his tenure from 2007 to 2017.As Badal sat with a placard around his neck, a man who was later identified as Narayan Singh Chaura approached him and opened fire. The attempt, however, was foiled almost immediately.In the clip, right after the gunman pulled out the weapon, an alert sewadar, believed to be a volunteer associated with an Akali leader, intervened and pushed the assailant’s arm upward as he attempted to fire. The bullet was discharged harmlessly into the air, and the attacker was quickly overpowered by volunteers and others present at the scene. Monsoon session of the Parliament concluded on Thursday NEW DELHI: Parliament’s Monsoon Session concluded on Thursday with both Houses adjourned sine die after weeks marked by legislative business, opposition protests and repeated disruptions over the Jantar Mantar protest and other political flashpoints.The Lok Sabha’s final morning was strikingly brief. In just three minutes and 10 seconds, members assembled, all six stanzas of Vande Mataram were rendered, MPs including Prime Minister stood to attention, and Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House sine die.The closing proceedings unfolded amid familiar slogans, with the Opposition shouting “apologise, apologise” and “who ordered the lathi-charge?” as home minister Amit Shah entered. Birla also skipped his customary valedictory remarks on the House’s performance, underscoring a session dominated by disruption. Rajya Sabha witnessed Mallikarjun Kharge remarks over Haldwani ‘Suddhikaran’ row followed by JP Nadda’s clarification and condemnation of the event.Meanwhile, in Rajya Sabha, leader of opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised the Haldwani ‘suddhikaran’ row, alleging that a havan was conducted at the venue after his rally. Leader of the House JP Nadda condemned the incident and assured Kharge that the matter would be investigated.Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha adjourned sine dieThe Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die by Speaker Om Birla at 11.06 am, followed by the Rajya Sabha, bringing the 19-sitting Monsoon Session to an end. The session had been scheduled from July 20 to August 13. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had said before the session that the government wanted the Houses to see “meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of National importance”.The closing proceedings, however, came amid a continuing logjam over the opposition’s demand for a government response to the police action against students protesting the NEET controversy.Rijiju flags low Parliament productivityParliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said 12 Bills were passed during the Monsoon Session, but acknowledged that parliamentary discussion remained limited. “It was a good session…we have passed 13 bills; but it was not a good session in terms of discussion,” he said. Lok Sabha productivity stood at 19%, compared with 39% in Rajya Sabha, he added. He also accused the Opposition of avoiding debate despite the government’s willingness to discuss issues. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and other senior leaders were present. The move followed fresh Union home ministry directions on the National Song’s protocol. During the session, Parliament also passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, providing statutory protection around national symbols.Kharge raises ‘purification’ row in Rajya SabhaCongress president and leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge used the final day to raise an alleged “purification” ritual at the Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani after his public meeting there.Kharge said, “I was in Haldwani where I made a public speech at Ramlila Maidan. Lakhs of people were there. At that time, I did not mention the name of any community or religion; I only reiterated the issues of the Govt. But after my speech, people of BJP performed a ‘havan’ there to ‘purify’ that stage…Is this the way in a democracy? How are you protecting the Constitution? I am the LoP.”Union minister JP Nadda responded that the BJP did not support such an act and said it would be investigated. “BJP does not subscribe to such activities. Never. But we will investigate this. The Opposition had demanded Shah’s statement and his presence in the Houses over the police action during the July 20 march by students towards Parliament.On Wednesday, Shah said the government was prepared for a detailed discussion. “As far as the discussion is concerned, Kiren Rijiju, who is our parliamentary affairs minister, has made it very clear that the government is ready to discuss every aspect of the student protests regarding NEET,” Shah said.He added, “On my part, I have also said that I am ready to answer any question in Parliament. But they don’t want the discussion to happen at all. Now let the public decide who is running away.”Rahul Gandhi rejected the offer, saying the Opposition was not interested in an “Amit Shah lecture” and questioning who ordered the use of force against protesting students.Bills: 12 introduced, 11 passed by both HousesThe Monsoon Session saw 12 Bills introduced, with 10 cleared by both Houses, according to PRS Legislative Research. Key legislation covered public examinations, national honour, birth and death registration, the Supreme Court, MSMEs, taxation, tribunals, cooperative development, Kerala’s name and mining.The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill received the most debate, 17 hours and 34 minutes across both Houses. Monsoon session of the Parliament concluded on Thursday NEW DELHI: Parliament’s Monsoon Session concluded on Thursday with both Houses adjourned sine die after weeks marked by legislative business, opposition protests and repeated disruptions over the Jantar Mantar protest and other political flashpoints.The Lok Sabha’s final morning was strikingly brief. In just three minutes and 10 seconds, members assembled, all six stanzas of Vande Mataram were rendered, MPs including Prime Minister stood to attention, and Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House sine die.The closing proceedings unfolded amid familiar slogans, with the Opposition shouting “apologise, apologise” and “who ordered the lathi-charge?” as home minister Amit Shah entered. Birla also skipped his customary valedictory remarks on the House’s performance, underscoring a session dominated by disruption. Rajya Sabha witnessed Mallikarjun Kharge remarks over Haldwani ‘Suddhikaran’ row followed by JP Nadda’s clarification and condemnation of the event.Meanwhile, in Rajya Sabha, leader of opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised the Haldwani ‘suddhikaran’ row, alleging that a havan was conducted at the venue after his rally. Leader of the House JP Nadda condemned the incident and assured Kharge that the matter would be investigated.Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha adjourned sine dieThe Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die by Speaker Om Birla at 11.06 am, followed by the Rajya Sabha, bringing the 19-sitting Monsoon Session to an end. The session had been scheduled from July 20 to August 13. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had said before the session that the government wanted the Houses to see “meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of National importance”.The closing proceedings, however, came amid a continuing logjam over the opposition’s demand for a government response to the police action against students protesting the NEET controversy.Rijiju flags low Parliament productivityParliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said 12 Bills were passed during the Monsoon Session, but acknowledged that parliamentary discussion remained limited. “It was a good session…we have passed 13 bills; but it was not a good session in terms of discussion,” he said. Lok Sabha productivity stood at 19%, compared with 39% in Rajya Sabha, he added. He also accused the Opposition of avoiding debate despite the government’s willingness to discuss issues. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and other senior leaders were present. The move followed fresh Union home ministry directions on the National Song’s protocol. During the session, Parliament also passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, providing statutory protection around national symbols.Kharge raises ‘purification’ row in Rajya SabhaCongress president and leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge used the final day to raise an alleged “purification” ritual at the Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani after his public meeting there.Kharge said, “I was in Haldwani where I made a public speech at Ramlila Maidan. Lakhs of people were there. At that time, I did not mention the name of any community or religion; I only reiterated the issues of the Govt. But after my speech, people of BJP performed a ‘havan’ there to ‘purify’ that stage…Is this the way in a democracy? How are you protecting the Constitution? I am the LoP.”Union minister JP Nadda responded that the BJP did not support such an act and said it would be investigated. “BJP does not subscribe to such activities. Never. But we will investigate this. I assure you that whatever happened there will certainly be investigated,” Nadda said, adding that he condemned the incident.Modi and Shah present as session closesPM Narendra Modi and Union HM Amit Shah were present during the closing proceedings, as the student protest controversy remained the dominant unresolved political issue. The Opposition had demanded Shah’s statement and his presence in the Houses over the police action during the July 20 march by students towards Parliament.On Wednesday, Shah said the government was prepared for a detailed discussion. “As far as the discussion is concerned, Kiren Rijiju, who is our parliamentary affairs minister, has made it very clear that the government is ready to discuss every aspect of the student protests regarding NEET,” Shah said.He added, “On my part, I have also said that I am ready to answer any question in Parliament. But they don’t want the discussion to happen at all. Now let the public decide who is running away.”Rahul Gandhi rejected the offer, saying the Opposition was not interested in an “Amit Shah lecture” and questioning who ordered the use of force against protesting students.Bills: 12 introduced, 11 passed by both HousesThe Monsoon Session saw 12 Bills introduced, with 10 cleared by both Houses, according to PRS Legislative Research. Key legislation covered public examinations, national honour, birth and death registration, the Supreme Court, MSMEs, taxation, tribunals, cooperative development, Kerala’s name and mining.The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill received the most debate, 17 hours and 34 minutes across both Houses.
