Birds that eat snakes: Nature’s unlikely serpent hunters

Scattered across Africa and Asia, serpent eagles are, quite literally, built for this exact job. Species like the brown snake eagle in Africa feed almost exclusively on snakes, showing no particular preference between harmless species and genuinely dangerous ones like cobras, puff adders, and black mambas. Their legs and talons carry noticeably thickened, scaled skin that acts as a kind of natural armour against bites, and their hunting technique typically involves swooping down and pinning the snake’s head first, neutralising its ability to strike before the rest of the fight even begins.
