There is a new parenting worry quietly making its way into homes: What happens when our children grow up with a machine that can answer almost everything? A child has a question? Ask AI. Homework problem? Ask AI. Don’t know why the moon changes shape? Ask AI. What if one of the most important things you teach your child in the age of AI is something that has nothing to do with technology?The best thing a parent can teach a child in the age of AI is the ability to pause, observe and think before looking for an answer.

Recently author Prerna Wadhawan, who is also a mom of two shared an interesting approach to doing exactly that. She says it’s one of the things she teaches her boys that nobody tests them on. She explains how she uses something as ordinary as a car ride to build her children’s critical-thinking skills.Her method is wonderfully simple: notice something, ask a question, and resist the urge to give the answer. Some of the instances she shared are:A scratched car can become an entire investigation. Who scratched it? Could it have been a coin? A key? A nail? Was it an accident or deliberate? What kind of object is hard enough to scratch metal?One ordinary observation suddenly becomes a conversation about materials, human behaviour, evidence, assumptions and probability. And there is no need to arrive at one definite answer. That, perhaps, is the lesson.

Don’t answer every question your child asks

Wadhawan says she follows one rule: “I never give an answer.” If she doesn’t know something, she is happy to research it with her children using multiple sources. But instead of immediately explaining, she nudges them toward the answer with another question. The idea behind this is to make curiosity part of everyday life.

Why this matters more in the age of AI

Research suggests that children’s endless “why?” questions aren’t merely a phase parents have to survive. They are part of how children learn.Research published in the Current Opinion in Behavioral Sciences on children’s curiosity suggests that explanation-seeking plays an important role in how children learn. When children encounter something they don’t understand, their questions can help them seek out the information needed to make sense of the world- making that natural curiosity worth protecting rather than quickly satisfying with an answer.This is where the conversation around AI and children needs some nuance.AI isn’t inherently the enemy of independent thinking. In fact, a child who already knows how to question, investigate, compare and challenge information could potentially use AI as a powerful learning tool. The danger comes when the sequence gets reversed.Instead of:Observe → wonder → think → investigate → use AI → verifyIt becomes:Question → ask AI → copy answer → move on.That shortcut can remove the most intellectually valuable part of the process: the struggle of trying to figure something out.

You don’t need another parenting activity

The beauty of this approach is that parents don’t need to create elaborate exercises. The world is already full of questions: A puddle that appears after rain, a broken streetlight, a dog sitting outside a shop, or a puddle after rain. Instead of always explaining what your child is seeing, occasionally stop and ask: “What do you notice?” then “How do you think it happened?”And perhaps that is what raising an independent thinker in the age of AI really looks like. Not refusing to let them use AI. But making sure that before they reach for a machine, they know how to reach for their own mind first. Because the child who can say, “I don’t know- let me figure it out,” may be far better prepared for the future than the child who simply knows where to find an answer.
