Vijay’s son Jason Sanjay reveals father gave him freedom to choose filmmaking, opens up on equation with mother Sangeetha

Jason Sanjay, who has grown up around the film industry, revealed that his father Vijay always encouraged him to explore his own interests rather than pushing him towards a particular career. He also recalled how Vijay supported his decision to study filmmaking overseas.“I have been to sets from a young age, so I was able to normalise that feeling. A lot of my friends saw cinema as pure entertainment from an audience point of view, but because I have been involved in that and I have seen my father in that profession for so many years, I always had that interest from a young age,” Jason said while speaking to Telugu anchor Suma on her YouTube channel,He further recalled telling his father that he wanted to go abroad, become independent and pursue filmmaking as a course. According to Jason, Vijay immediately supported the decision.“But then, when I told him I wanted to go overseas, be independent and pursue filmmaking as a course, he didn’t hesitate. He was the first one to give me a green signal because he has been in the industry for so long. More than my mother and my sister, he actually understood the importance of it,” he said.

Vijay told Jason to discover whether filmmaking was right for him

Jason said Vijay encouraged him to pursue a formal course in filmmaking so that he could understand his own interests and assess whether he genuinely wanted to make a career out of cinema.“He said, ‘You go do the course, then only you will understand what you like, what is working for you, and whether you even like this profession. So you get an understanding of yourself.’ So he’s very supportive of that,” Jason recalled.Jason is now taking his first major step behind the camera with Sigma, which stars Sundeep Kishan in the lead. The film is scheduled for an August release and Jason has been actively promoting the project.

Before stepping into filmmaking, Jason had a brief acting stint as a child artist. He appeared alongside his father in the 2009 Tamil film Vettaikaaran. However, Jason now looks back at the experience with a sense of amusement and questions whether his appearance was necessary.“I think I was eight or nine years old. We shot in Rajahmundry. And I remember my father came and told me he had an idea, he wanted me to be a part of it. I said okay,” Jason said.He added that his familiarity with film sets made the experience comfortable for him.“The confidence came from the fact that I was used to sets and had been comfortable with crew members. It was a very normal feeling. Now, when I am all grown up, I look back and think, what was the need for me in the movie? It has no connection to it,” he added.

Jason calls mother Sangeetha his biggest cheerleader

Jason also opened up about his equation with his mother Sangeetha. He described her as someone who continues to treat him like a child despite his growing professional responsibilities.“Till date, she treats me like a kid. After I started to work, I haven’t been able to spend time with her. But she constantly keeps a check on me and always has been my biggest cheerleader, motivating me at all times,” Jason said.He also revealed that he is looking forward to his mother watching Sigma and sharing her thoughts.“I am waiting for her to watch the film and give me feedback. She is very transparent and honest with her opinions,” he said.

Talking about his sister, Jason admitted that the siblings were not always close while growing up. However, their relationship evolved as they got older.“We were like cat and mouse growing up, but after we grew up, we became closer. The long distance has strengthened our bond,” he said.
