Colorado teenager Jude Kofie has reached another milestone in a remarkable musical journey that began when he taught himself to play the piano by ear at age 10. Kofie has now released his debut album, ‘Introducing Jude Kofie,’ on Octave Records. PS Audio’s Copper magazine, which profiled the young pianist’s first recording in June 2026, describes the album as a showcase of his ability as a pianist and songwriter, featuring his interpretations spanning jazz, gospel, Latin, soul and pop.
A talent discovered at home
Kofie’s musical story began with an old keyboard in the basement of his family’s home. He had no formal piano lessons and had not been taught how to play, but he began figuring out music on his own by listening and playing by ear.His parents soon realised that what appeared to be a childhood interest was something much more unusual. Kofie developed a natural ability to understand melodies and reproduce them on the keyboard, eventually building his skills without the conventional path of years of piano instruction.According to PS Audio, Kofie faced several health challenges while growing up. He was born prematurely and underwent multiple heart surgeries as a child. He was also diagnosed with autism. Despite those difficulties, music became an important part of his development, and he continued to build his abilities at the piano. By his early teens, Kofie had developed into a pianist capable of moving between different musical styles while adding his own improvisations and interpretations.

The $15,000 piano gift
Kofie’s story had already attracted attention before the release of his debut album. In 2023, when Kofie was 11, CBS News reported that a piano tuner named Bill Magnusson heard about the young pianist and decided to help him.Magnusson used an inheritance from his father to purchase a $15,000 piano for Kofie. According to CBS News, the instrument was estimated to be worth about $45,000. Magnusson also promised to have the piano tuned once a month for the rest of Kofie’s life and paid for him to receive professional piano lessons.The gift came after Magnusson learned more about Kofie’s family and heard him play. At the time, Kofie had been playing without formal instruction, making the high-quality instrument and professional guidance an important opportunity for the young musician.That unexpected act of generosity gave Kofie access to an instrument that could support his growing talent. What began with a keyboard at home was now developing into a more serious musical pursuit.
From self-taught pianist to album release
Kofie’s latest achievement is the release of Introducing Jude Kofie, his first recording with Octave Records. The album features him playing both acoustic and electric piano alongside bassist Murphy Smith, drummer Matthew Campbell, organist Solomon Chapman and trumpeter Parris Fleming.The recording moves across several musical styles. It opens with an Afro-Cuban interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing,” before moving into Charlie Parker’s “Ornithology.” Other selections include “Misty,” “There Will Never Be Another You,” and a solo piano performance of “I Surrender All.”Faith is also an important part of the album. Kofie performs songs including “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “Oh Happy Day,” “Thank You Lord,” and “Total Praise.” The album therefore reflects not only his technical development but also the different musical influences that have shaped his playing.The recording was produced at Octave Studios by Callum Bair, with Gus Skinas handling mastering and Paul McGowan serving as executive producer, according to PS Audio. The album was recorded using Octave Records’ Pure DSD process.For Kofie, the release represents a significant step from being a child who discovered the piano on his own to becoming a teenage recording artist. His journey has included an unexpected $15,000 piano gift, professional lessons and years of musical development.
