All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules have a provision to extend the services of certain secretaries beyond the retirement age of 60 years NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday gave a one-year extension in service to cabinet secretary TV Somanathan and home secretary Govind Mohan. This is the first such extension for the two key officers at the Centre. Their fixed tenure of two years was coming to an end this month.In an order, the personnel department said the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Somanathan as cabinet secretary for one year beyond Aug 30, 2026. Somanathan, a 1987-batch IAS officer of TN cadre, was appointed to the post in Aug 2024. Mohan’s service has been extended beyond August 22, 2026, up to August 22, 2027, as per the order. MEA said the constitutional changes made on August 5, 2019, are entirely an internal matter of India NEW DELHI: India slammed Pakistan for the so-called Youm-e-Istehsal (Day of Exploitation), which it observes on August 5, saying Pakistan’s desperate attempts to peddle falsehoods are intended solely to deflect international attention from its own dismal human rights record and its status as the global epicentre of terrorism.In a statement, ministry of external affairs (MEA) said the constitutional changes made on August 5, 2019, are entirely an internal matter of India and that these decisions had brought unprecedented socio-economic development, good governance, and democratic empowerment to the people of the region.On August 5, 2019, the government revoked the special status of J&K granted under Article 370 and bifurcated the state into UTs of J&K and Ladakh.“India categorically rejects the political absurdity and futile attempts by Pakistan to observe the so-called Youm-e-Istehsal to spread malicious propaganda against India. Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are, have always been, and shall forever remain an integral and inalienable part of India,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, adding that Pakistan has no locus standi to comment on matters that are strictly internal to India.The international community is currently witnessing the brutal suppression of fundamental rights in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), said the official.“Recent weeks have seen Pakistani security forces resort to lethal violence, targeted killings, and draconian bans to silence peaceful civil rights protests led by the local populace. The Supreme Court requested high courts to pass appropriate full-court resolutions in favour of increasing the age of superannuation of judicial officers from 60 to 62 years NEW DELHI: Attempting to bring judicial officers’ retirement age on a par with that for HC judges, the Supreme Court on Wednesday asked states to decide by Sept 2 on increasing the superannuation age of trial court judges from 60 to 62 years while brushing aside pleas of financial constraints and the disparity it would create vis-a-vis government employees.In the early 1990s, the Supreme Court had increased through a judgment the retirement age of judicial officers across India from 58 to 60 years. This time, however, a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana said that instead of a judicial ruling, it would be better if state governments made the decision on their own. The strength of trial court judges has doubled since 1992, from around 10,000 to over 20,000 at present. The number of HC judges has increased from 568 in 1992 to 1,114 now.A few states have increased the age of retirement for judicial officers from 60 to 61, akin to similar benefits for government employees. Some states argued that increasing the age of superannuation of judicial officers to 62 years would create disparity and cause discontent among government employees, who too would demand identical benefits, entailing a huge financial burden for the government.But the bench rejected both these objections. It said that when a judicial officer retires, the government pays them a lump-sum amount and pension, which is more than half of their last-drawn salary. On filling the vacancy, the government pays a salary to the new appointee.
