NEW DELHI: India performed a record 20,138 organ transplants in 2025, crossing the 20,000-mark for the first time and registered a 6.5% increase over the previous year, according to National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation’s (NOTTO) annual report. The figure marks a fourfold rise from 4,990 transplants in 2013.Delhi-NCR recorded the highest number of transplants in 2025 with 4,564 procedures, followed by Tamil Nadu (2,796), Maharashtra (2,136), Telangana (1,523) and Kerala (1,489). Deceased donor transplants still far short of demandIndia continues to rank first globally in living donor organ transplants, according to Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation report released in 2026.The 20,000-mark milestone coincided with the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day, when health ministry announced that more than five lakh Aadhaar-verified organ donation pledges have been recorded since the national digital pledge portal was launched in 2023.Despite the gains, deceased organ donation remains India’s biggest challenge. Deceased donor transplants rose from 837 in 2013 to 3,526 in 2025, but continue to fall far short of demand. “A substantial gap still exists between demand for organs and their availability. NEW DELHI: Rejecting Meta’s apology for taking down a PM Narendra Modi’s video, a parliamentary committee Monday sought a personal apology from its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and warned of seeking removal of its safe harbour protection if he failed to comply, its chairperson Nishikant Dubey said.Dubey said removal of the PM’s video was either a serious failure of the system or there “is a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the PM” on part of Meta. “If this is how they deal with the official post of the PM, what can the common people of India expect? This failure cannot be dismissed merely as a technical error. It is a serious matter and an apology must come from Zuckerberg’s side. And if he does not apologise, safe harbour protection should be taken back from them,” Dubey said.Senior representatives of a host of social media platforms, including X, Google, YouTube, besides Meta, appeared before the Dubey-led committee on communications and IT, besides home secretary Govind Mohan and IT secretary S Krishnan.Parliamentarians questioned digital platforms over their choice of algorithms and presence of unlawful content, including child sexual abuse material (CSAM), deep fake investment scams, and targeting of women, with Meta being particularly at the receiving end of their ire.While some opposition MPs emphasised that social media must retain space of dissent and ‘anti-govt’ content should not be considered ‘anti-national’, the committee was unanimous in asking for stricter and timely measures against the content that are in violation of their own stated policies, especially involving CSAM, cyber frauds, and harassment of women.”We are unanimous and non-partisan on all issues,” Dubey said, adding that even MHA’s communications is ignored by these platforms.The BJP MP referred to the high online viewership grabbed by CJP during its recent protest, saying it, at 27 million, was more than the combined viewership of parties like BJP, Congress, AAP and SP. NEW DELHI: Raising the possibility of Parliament’s monsoon session being a washout, opposition Monday told govt that a discussion on the Ram temple donation issue and Union minister Amit Shah’s statement on police’s alleged crackdown on students are a must for the legislature to function normally. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called the absence of PM Narendra Modi and Shah from both Houses an “insult to democracy”.Amid opposition’s protest, a bill in Lok Sabha to replace an ordinance that increased the number of SC judges from 34 to 38 was passed without discussion, with parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju slamming opposition for not participating in the debate in both Houses and alleging outside that they were not allowed to speak.Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, amid the din, introduced the bankers’ books evidence bill to replace a British-era law with the objective of including all forms of records maintained by banks, including digital and cloud-based, as admissible evidence in the court of law in sync with digital dependence of the banking system.Opposition’s stand in Parliament, then later at BAC meetings, was indicative of the continued disruptions. NEW DELHI: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has said alcoholic beverage manufacturers cannot add “rum flavour” to rum or “whisky flavour” to whisky and market them as standard products, saying the practice misrepresents the true nature of the beverage and misleads consumers.The regulator said the issue is not the use of permitted flavouring substances, but addition of the flavour of the standardised alcoholic beverage itself, which serves no legitimate purpose. It said the characteristic taste and aroma of products such as rum and whisky should develop naturally through the base ingredients, fermentation, distillation and maturation. However, inspections found that some manufacturers were producing beverages largely from neutral alcohol, which has no characteristic flavour, and then adding identical flavouring substances to recreate the taste and aroma of rum or whisky. Such products, FSSAI said, should be labelled as “rum-flavoured spirit” or “whisky-flavoured spirit”, with the front of the pack clearly disclosing their true nature.
