NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday night shared a video carrying a message against abusive language and hate, saying that “abuses never solve anything”, amid the controversy over alleged derogatory remarks made against him by a Noida woman during a protest in Delhi.Sharing the video on X, PM Modi wrote, “Abuses never solve anything. NEW DELHI: The family of two convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in the Ankit Sharma murder case, along with former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, on Friday said they would challenge the trial court’s verdict in the Delhi High Court.Speaking to ANI, Mohammad Asif, the brother of convicts Nazim and Kasim, claimed that his brothers had been falsely implicated in the case and denied any connection with Tahir Hussain.”We will appeal in the High Court. One of my brothers, the younger one, Kasim, lived in the village. The other one too had gone to the village two days before the incident. NEW DELHI: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Friday strongly criticised Parliament’s passage of a Bill that makes alleged disrespect to Vande Mataram a punishable offence, calling it an attack on religious and constitutional freedoms and urging the government not to impose patriotic expressions through legal compulsion.In a press release issued on 31 July, the Muslim body said the legislation was contrary to the constitutional, secular and democratic ethos of the country and amounted to a serious assault on the religious freedom of citizens. It argued that compelling participation in a song or slogan carrying religious connotations violated fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution.The Board’s spokesperson, Dr SQR Ilyas, said that making Vande Mataram legally mandatory for all communities was incompatible with both constitutional principles and Islamic belief.“Any attempt to make Vande Mataram compulsory for all sections and religious communities through legal coercion is not only objectionable but also contrary to the fundamental principles of the Constitution,” he said.The AIMPLB said that during the framing of the Constitution, the Constituent Assembly accepted only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram at the national level, while the religious connotations of the remaining portions were not considered compatible with India’s secular character.Dr Ilyas argued that certain passages of the song depict the motherland in the form of a goddess and exhort people to worship her, which he said was contrary to the Islamic doctrine of Tawheed, or the absolute Oneness of God.“Therefore, compelling a Muslim to participate in a song, slogan or practice carrying a religious meaning contrary to his or her faith is wholly unacceptable,” he said.The Board also cited Articles 25 and 19 of the Constitution, saying they protect the freedom of religion and freedom of expression, including the right not to participate in expressions that conflict with an individual’s conscience.“These constitutional safeguards clearly imply that no citizen can be compelled to adopt or participate in any song, slogan, ideology or symbol against his or her religious beliefs and conscience,” the statement said.Referring to the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment in Bijoe Emmanuel v. State of Kerala, Dr Ilyas said the court had upheld this principle even in the context of the national anthem.“The Court held that a person could not be punished merely for not participating in an act when doing so was contrary to his or her religious beliefs. The Court also made it clear that, in certain circumstances, freedom of expression includes the right to remain silent, and that respectful non-participation cannot be regarded as disrespect.”The AIMPLB sought to distinguish between patriotism and religious devotion, saying that love for one’s country should not be equated with worship.“Love for the motherland and worship of the motherland are two entirely different concepts. (PTI images) NEW DELHI: India on Friday slammed Pakistan of making an open admission of state-sponsored terrorism after a senior aide to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged that Islamabad had trained and armed Mujahideen who have now turned against the Pakistani state. The ministry of external affairs (MEA) also condemned Pakistan’s crackdown on anti-government protesters in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), alleging that more than 40 civilians had been killed.Addressing the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Pakistan’s handling of the protests had exposed its treatment of civilians in the region.”As you and all of us have witnessed, the Pakistani establishment continues to unleash ruthless force against peaceful civilians in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. This crackdown has resulted in the tragic death of over 40 innocent people, and many more have been seriously injured. It’s the establishment’s absolute disdain for the innocent people of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir that was laid bare when their Defence Minister branded the protesting civilians as enemies,” Jaiswal said.Referring to recent remarks by Pakistan Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, Jaiswal said the statement amounted to a public acknowledgement that Pakistan had trained, funded and armed militants who were later sent into India.”The Special Assistant of the Prime Minister [of Pakistan] on Political Affairs has openly admitted that the very Mujahideen that the Pakistani establishment trained, funded, armed, and sent to India have turned their guns inwards, weaponising themselves against the state,” Jaiswal said.The remarks came after Sanaullah, in an interview with Geo News, said: “are the same people we once trained as Mujahideen. We sent them to fight, and today they are hanging around our necks.”India has long accused Pakistan of sponsoring cross-border terrorism, an allegation Islamabad has consistently denied.Jaiswal also criticised the recently held elections in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, calling them a rejection of Pakistan’s establishment.”The so-called elections stand as a humiliating rejection of the Pakistan establishment. Facing a violent regime, the people have requested international organisations for an independent investigation into the unlawful killings.
