A communication in this regard was sent to the field formations of the country’s largest paramilitary force, which handles various internal security duties, including riot and crowd control.Although the message did not specify what it meant by the “recent past”, it came days after the Rapid Action Force (RAF), the CRPF’s specialised riot-control wing, allegedly used pellet guns against student protesters during their march to Parliament in Delhi on July 20.The force is probing the alleged use of pellet guns by the RAF.On this, officials asserted that any “reckless or unjustified action” by RAF personnel would invite disciplinary action as per the CRPF’s rules and applicable law.They reiterated that a formal Court of Inquiry (CoI) would be initiated once the RAF/CRPF probe establishes that the troops’ actions in Delhi last week were unjustified or violated standard operating procedures (SOPs).The probe is examining around 9-10 allegations against RAF/CRPF personnel, based on multiple social media videos and press reports, as well as instances where some jawans were allegedly left stranded and attacked by miscreants.According to officials, the inquiry is looking into the circumstances under which pellet guns and shock batons were reportedly used. (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: The Bihar government on Monday announced the withdrawal of FIRs against all protesters who were arrested for alleged involvement in last week’s violent protests over the NEET (UG) issue in the state.According to the Bihar government’s home department, the relief would apply to all cases registered up to 6 pm on July 26, a day after the demonstrations.The home department further stated that all those arrested within this period would be released and no further action would be taken against any of the accused.The announcement came hours after the Bihar Police, while detailing the violence during the demonstrations, stated that 694 people — nearly half of them minors — were detained for allegedly attempting to enforce a state-wide bandh last week over the NEET paper leak issue.According to the statement, violence during the July 25 bandh, called by Left-wing students’ unions, left 91 personnel and officials, two administrative officers and 13 civilians injured.Among those detained, “339 minors and students” were released after age verification, while the remaining 355 were produced before courts and were facing proceedings “for involvement in violent activities.”Thirteen government vehicles were vandalised and another was set on fire by bandh supporters. Those injured in the incidents included the SP of Siwan and SDPOs from Siwan and Sitamarhi districts.In Saran, two Block Development Officers (BDOs) suffered grievous injuries, with one losing an eye and the other sustaining a serious head injury.Both BDOs were “battling for life” at separate hospitals in Patna, the state capital.Cockroach Janta Party warns of fresh protestsMeanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the youth outfit that led protests in Delhi over the NEET (UG) paper leak issue, on Monday warned the Centre of renewed demonstrations if cases against all protesters across the country were not withdrawn.The withdrawal of cases was one of the CJP’s three conditions for calling off its agitation, which it ended on July 25 after the Centre accepted all its demands.The CJP had been holding an indefinite protest since June 21, seeking accountability over the paper leak issue. (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: The Bihar government on Monday announced the withdrawal of FIRs against all protesters who were arrested for alleged involvement in last week’s violent protests over the NEET (UG) issue in the state.According to the Bihar government’s home department, the relief would apply to all cases registered up to 6 pm on July 26, a day after the demonstrations.The home department further stated that all those arrested within this period would be released and no further action would be taken against any of the accused.The announcement came hours after the Bihar Police, while detailing the violence during the demonstrations, stated that 694 people — nearly half of them minors — were detained for allegedly attempting to enforce a state-wide bandh last week over the NEET paper leak issue.According to the statement, violence during the July 25 bandh, called by Left-wing students’ unions, left 91 personnel and officials, two administrative officers and 13 civilians injured.Among those detained, “339 minors and students” were released after age verification, while the remaining 355 were produced before courts and were facing proceedings “for involvement in violent activities.”Thirteen government vehicles were vandalised and another was set on fire by bandh supporters. Those injured in the incidents included the SP of Siwan and SDPOs from Siwan and Sitamarhi districts.In Saran, two Block Development Officers (BDOs) suffered grievous injuries, with one losing an eye and the other sustaining a serious head injury.Both BDOs were “battling for life” at separate hospitals in Patna, the state capital.Cockroach Janta Party warns of fresh protestsMeanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the youth outfit that led protests in Delhi over the NEET (UG) paper leak issue, on Monday warned the Centre of renewed demonstrations if cases against all protesters across the country were not withdrawn.The withdrawal of cases was one of the CJP’s three conditions for calling off its agitation, which it ended on July 25 after the Centre accepted all its demands.The CJP had been holding an indefinite protest since June 21, seeking accountability over the paper leak issue. The NHAI’s wins major arbitration case NEW DELHI: NHAI, in a recent arbitration case, has got an arbitration order in its favour, rejecting the majority of claims – against the claim of Rs 3,177 crore by a contractor; the arbitral tribunal awarded only Rs 46 crore to settle the case.In an official statement, the highways authority said that the arbitration case involved 151-km Bareilly-Sitapur BOT (Toll) highway project in Uttar Pradesh.The dispute arose after NHAI terminated the concession agreement with Bareilly Highways Project Limited (BHPL), a company promoted by Era Infra Engineering Ltd, in May 2019. The concessionaire had sought compensation of around Rs 3,177 crore through 30 claims before a three-member arbitral tribunal.In its award, the tribunal allowed only three claims worth about Rs 46 crore, along with applicable interest, while rejecting the overwhelming majority of the claims. The tribunal also upheld the validity of the “supplementary agreement” signed on March 30, 2015, and ruled that delays in the project were concurrent, weakening the concessionaire’s case.NHAI had filed counterclaims relating to financial losses and public inconvenience caused by the stalled project. Although these counterclaims were not accepted, the authority successfully defended itself against the bulk of the concessionaire’s claims, substantially reducing its potential financial exposure.The latest ruling adds to a series of arbitration successes for NHAI this year. In June, it secured an award of Rs 1,202 crore in the Tumkur-Chitradurga six-laning project in Karnataka. Earlier, arbitration in the Panipat-Jalandhar highway project involving claims exceeding Rs 8,000 crore was settled at Rs 819.96 crore in NHAI’s favour. CJP announces legal aid NEW DELHI: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday announced plans to launch a website to raise public donations for a legal aid fund and connect lawyers with protesters facing legal action after the 37-day NEET agitation. The announcement came amid the party’s allegations that protesters were being detained and cases were being filed despite assurances from the Centre that no action would be taken after the agitation ended on July 25. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said the organisation had sought legal advice from senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal before and after calling off the protests. Das said the party feared that participants could face legal action once the movement ended. “We were in constant touch with Kapil ji and had sought legal guidance. When we called off the protest on the 25th, we apprehended that in the future, once the movement subsided or the momentum of the protest waned, the government might start targeting individuals. This is a very credible apprehension, as the same playbook has been observed in other major protests where individuals were singled out and implicated in false cases,” he said.He said the organisation had been providing legal and medical support to students since the beginning of the agitation and was now expanding that network across states.Sibal pledges Rs 1 crore aidKapil Sibal announced financial support for the initiative and said he would contribute Rs 1 crore to the legal aid fund. He also appealed to lawyers across the country to represent protesters facing cases. “We don’t want any action against those who sat in protest. It was an organic protest. Often governments want no dissent. Wherever there were peaceful protests and wherever protestors were targeted, they will create a website. I will give Rs 1 crore. I appeal to lawyers to aid us so that wherever in India there are trials our lawyers will help protestors who are being tried,” Sibal said.CJP seeks written agreementEarlier in the day, the CJP accused the Centre of violating the understanding reached when the protest was called off.In a post on X, CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka alleged that students had been arrested in Bihar and West Bengal, while volunteers in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh were being detained or harassed.The party demanded that FIRs against protesters be withdrawn, detained students be released and a written agreement on legal protections be shared by Tuesday.
