NEW DELHI: Five Indonesian Air Force fighter jets escorted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aircraft out of Indonesian airspace on Wednesday as he departed Jakarta for Australia after concluding his three-day state visit.According to visuals shared by news agency PTI, PM Modi acknowledged the fighter jets from inside the aircraft as they escorted his plane.Before his departure, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto personally saw off the Prime Minister at the airport.PM Modi had also received a similar ceremonial welcome on Monday, when Indonesian Air Force fighter jets escorted his aircraft upon entering Indonesian airspace.During his visit, Modi was warmly received by President Prabowo in Jakarta and witnessed a traditional dance performance.As he concluded the visit, the Prime Minister said the trip had opened “new avenues for cooperation” across key sectors, including defence, maritime collaboration, artificial intelligence and digital innovation.”As I conclude my visit to Indonesia, I leave with immense satisfaction at the outcomes achieved as far as the future of our partnership is concerned. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people of Indonesia and to President Prabowo Subianto for his exceptional warmth and personal commitment to taking India-Indonesia relations to new heights,” Modi said.During wide-ranging talks on Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi and President Prabowo reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, covering political, defence, economic, technological and regional cooperation.According to a joint statement, Modi’s July 6-8 state visit marked an important milestone in bilateral ties following President Prabowo’s visit to India as the Chief Guest for the 76th Republic Day celebrations in January 2025. The two leaders agreed to hold regular summit meetings, including on the sidelines of multilateral events, while strengthening existing bilateral dialogue mechanisms.The leaders held bilateral talks in Jakarta, discussed a broad range of issues and witnessed the exchange of several agreements. Prime Minister Modi also addressed the Indonesian Parliament and attended a reception hosted by the Indian community.On defence and maritime cooperation, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defence ties through regular dialogues, joint military exercises, staff talks, defence research, co-production of defence technologies, hydrography, peacekeeping, information sharing and defence industrial cooperation. They should have taken moral responsibility so that we could have held the rally peacefully. Instead, they allowed BJP workers, who beat our workers,” she said.Her remarks came a day after the Calcutta high court allowed the Trinamool Youth Congress to hold the rally after setting aside a Kolkata Police communication denying permission.The high court had permitted the march with several conditions, including a revised route, restricted timings, a cap of 1,000 participants, no loudspeakers, use of handheld microphones and keeping one side of the road open for traffic.The protest was organised over the alleged rape and murder of the minor girl in Baruipur, an incident that has sparked widespread outrage in West Bengal.Claiming that women protesters were also attacked, Mamata added, “Women were beaten. We had the court’s order. The BJP threatened us this morning as well… The police have become BJP cadres.”She further questioned the police’s handling of the protest, saying, “The Calcutta high court allowed our rally, but BJP goons stopped it. How can the police undermine the court order allowing the TMC rally? BJP goons beat up our workers during the protest march.”The TMC chief also alleged that she was being prevented from carrying out political activities.”I am being kept under police watch as if I am under house arrest,” she said, adding that the “West Bengal Police have become an arm of the BJP.”Addressing the gathering, Mamata also accused the police of failing to act where crimes against women were taking place.”We all know how you came to power… the police are keeping a watch on us here, yet they are nowhere to be found where atrocities against women are taking place. Rampage and chaos are unfolding across the entire area, from Kalighat and my residence to Ballygunge. Is this the ‘change’ the people of Bengal wanted?” she said.She said the rally had been held only after obtaining permission from the high court but alleged that participants were attacked despite the court’s order.”We have to seek court permission for rallies. We held the rally after obtaining court approval, yet you saw how people were attacked. Those who loot money in the name of Ram should be ashamed… do not tarnish the name of Ram,” Mamata said.Alleging a breakdown of law and order, TMC chief said, “Law and order here has completely collapsed—the situation is worse than even that of Uttar Pradesh. How did the police violate the High Court’s approval for the rally? This amounts to contempt of court. They have failed to provide security to the people. Rahul Gandhi NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday alleged fresh irregularities in last week’s UGC-NET examination, claiming that a document linked to the question paper was circulated before the test and matched a large number of questions asked in the Sociology paper.He also accused the Centre of failing to act despite repeated allegations of examination paper leaks.In a post on X, Rahul claimed that a 100-page PDF was circulated before the UGC-NET examination and alleged that it related to question paper setting material available only with the National Testing Agency (NTA). He further alleged that nearly 90 questions in the PDF matched those in the actual Sociology question paper and claimed the paper was being sold for Rs 2.25 lakh in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan. The 9th-century Hindu temple PM Modi visited in Indonesia Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday jointly inaugurated an India-supported restoration project at the Prambanan Temple Compounds, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, during Modi’s state visit to Indonesia.The inauguration marked a key moment in India’s cultural diplomacy under its “Act East” policy, highlighting the shared civilisational and cultural links between India and Indonesia.Recalling the restoration of several historic temples in India, PM Modi said he felt privileged to be associated with the revival of the Prambanan Temple Compounds.”Whether it is the reconstruction of Kedardham or the reconstruction of Ujjain Mahakal, or coming here today to have the fortune to start the work of reviving and renovating our cultural heritage–which is about a thousand or twelve hundred years old and connected with memories of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh–I consider myself extremely lucky, PM Modi said. Referring to the restoration project, PM Modi said he would return to the Prambanan Temple Compounds once the work is completed. “I promise you that after its reconstruction, I will definitely come here and celebrate this festival with you,” PM Modi said. The restoration project at the Prambanan Temple Compounds is part of India’s broader efforts to preserve the region’s shared cultural heritage. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is working with Indonesian authorities to restore and conserve several smaller temples within the sprawling Prambanan complex.Located near Yogyakarta on Indonesia’s Java island, Prambanan is one of the country’s largest Hindu temple complexes. Built in the 9th century AD, the site suffered extensive damage over the centuries due to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and political upheaval in the early 11th century. The temples, which were rediscovered in the 17th century, have since undergone multiple phases of restoration.The complex comprises 240 temples dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Its innermost enclosure houses 16 temples, including the 47-metre-tall Shiva temple, flanked by the Brahma temple to the north and the Vishnu temple to the south.Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Prambanan is renowned for its intricate stone reliefs depicting the Indonesian version of the Ramayana. UNESCO describes the temple compounds as a masterpiece of classical Shiva art in Indonesia, with restoration work continuing since 1918 using both traditional interlocking stone techniques and modern structural reinforcement methods.
