NEW DELHI: Bettiah, one of Bihar’s 243 Assembly constituencies, is located in the West Champaran district and is currently held by the BJP.In the 2025 elections, Congress has fielded Washi Ahmad to take on incumbent MLA and BJP leader Renu Devi, while Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj has entered the fray with Anil Kumar Singh as its candidate, adding a fresh twist to the contest.

In the 2020 Assembly polls, BJP’s Renu Devi secured victory with 84,496 votes (52.83%), defeating Congress candidate Madan Mohan Tiwari, who garnered 66,417 votes (41.53%), by a margin of 18,079 votes.Interestingly, in 2015, the tables had turned — Congress’s Tiwari won the seat with 66,786 votes (45.26%), edging past Renu Devi of the BJP, who received 64,466 votes (43.69%), by just 2,320 votes.Bettiah has consistently witnessed close contests between the BJP and the Congress, with power alternating between the two parties in successive elections.

Image: IANS NEW DELHI: With the West Asia crisis bringing electrification of economy back into focus, the countries participating in dialogues to deal with challenges of climate change may by the year-end agree to a new global target of electricity meeting 35% of the world’s energy demand by 2035.A proposal to this effect was made by the COP31 Presidency of Türkiye when it announced a new “35×35″ global electrification target — an increase in share of electricity in world’s overall energy demand from just over 20% at present to 35% by 2035 — at the ongoing mid-year UN climate meeting in Bonn, Germany on Tuesday.The target is based on analysis from International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and is designed to support implementation of the Paris Agreement and help keep the world on a pathway consistent with limiting warming to 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial (1850-1900) levels. It aims for a major acceleration in the shift from use of direct fossil fuels (oil and gas) to clean electricity (from renewables and nuclear) across buildings, transport and industry.The ongoing Bonn meeting (June 8-18) will set an action agenda for the year-end UN climate conference (COP31) scheduled to take place in Antalya, Türkiye in Nov.“By electrifying daily life, from transport to buildings and industry, we can protect families and businesses from volatile energy markets. This ‘35% by 2035’ target will be one of the defining priorities of our COP31 Presidency. On the road to COP31 in Antalya, we will work to bring together a strong global coalition that is ready and determined to act in support of this objective,” said COP31 president-designate Murat Kurum.In support of the electrification target, the Presidency, in partnership with Australia, has commissioned IEA to deliver special reports to map out pathways for achieving the “35×35” target.During a presentation on the Presidency’s action agenda, Kurum also announced other targets, including a goal of halving growth in global waste by 2035. Nipah virus (Image source: PTI) Kerala health minister K Muraleedharan on Thursday confirmed that a suspected Nipah virus case in Kozhikode has tested positive, while final confirmation from the Virology Institute is still awaited.The patient was initially admitted to Crescent Hospital in Kozhikode with a high fever and was later shifted to another hospital after his condition failed to improve, he told reporters.According to the minister, doctors suspected Nipah infection after the fever persisted, and the patient is currently on ventilator support.Contact tracing underwayHealth authorities have launched extensive contact tracing and identified 77 people who came into contact with the patient. These include 58 healthcare workers, 14 family members and five friends.The minister said none of the identified contacts have shown any symptoms of the disease so far, but they are being closely monitored as a precautionary measure.Public advisory and preventive measures Muraleedharan also urged the public to remain vigilant, noting that the period between May and September is considered high-risk for Nipah virus transmission.He advised people not to touch or provoke bats, which are known carriers of the virus, and to immediately alert authorities if they spot unusual bat activity.The state government, he added, is actively working on measures to prevent further Nipah cases and strengthen surveillance efforts.What is the Nipah virus?World Health Organisation (WHO) describes Nipah virus as a zoonotic virus, usually transmitted from animals to humans, but can also be transmitted through contaminated food or directly between people.Nipah virus was first identified in 1998 during an outbreak among pig farmers in Malaysia. NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party national general secretary Tarun Chugh was elected unopposed in the biennial Rajya Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.Along with him, Rajneesh Agrawal and Mahesh Kewat were also declared elected unopposed to the Upper House by the Returning Officer.The three candidates displayed their certificates of election after receiving them from the returning officer at the state Assembly premises.In a post on X, Chugh expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP leadership for giving him the opportunity to serve in the Rajya Sabha.”Heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and the party leadership for reposing their faith and confidence in me by entrusting me with the opportunity to serve in the Rajya Sabha,” Chugh said.”This is a matter of immense honour and responsibility for me. I reaffirm my commitment to work with utmost dedication and sincerity towards realizing the vision of a Viksit Bharat under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji,” he added.Voting for the three Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh was scheduled for June 18. These seats were to fall vacant with the expiry of the terms of BJP’s George Kurien and Sumer Singh Solanki, and senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, on June 21.The BJP has 164 MLAs in the 230-member Madhya Pradesh assembly, while the Congress has 62 MLAs eligible to vote. With each Rajya Sabha candidate requiring 58 votes to win, the BJP was assured of winning two seats comfortably, while the Congress had enough votes to win a single seat.However, ahead of the election, Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination was rejected on charges of concealing information about a case in her affidavit.Get the latest India news and live updates.
