NEW DELHI Congress Thursday wrote to PM Narendra Modi demanding a high-level investigation monitored by Supreme Court into what it called Ram Temple “chanda chori mega scandal”.Congress MP and general secretary KC Venugopal pointed out that Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was created by the Centre after it was entrusted with public land by SC through its judgment in 2020. “It is the moral responsibility of GOI, and you as its head, to restore the faith of over 1.4 billion Indians in govt’s intent and ability to safeguard donations and preserve the sanctity of an institution established in the name of Lord Ram,” he wrote.He said the SIT probe ordered by the UP govt seems to be an eyewash as it is focused on “small fish” while facts suggest the complicity of top officials.Meanwhile, AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal asserted that only “pawns” had been arrested while “powerful” individuals involved in the scam were being protected.Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal alleged significant corruption related to land purchases, the temple’s construction, and donations from devotees.”They are hoodwinking us with the arrest of the eight persons; the real people (culprits) are someone else. The entire regular teaching staff of two Delhi govt schools – one at Bhalswa and another near GTB Nagar – has been deployed for booth-level officer (BLO) duties during the peak period of the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, citing manpower requirements for data handling, administrative work and BLO-related responsibilities, a school official said.According to the official, the Bhalswa school has around 1,200 students and approximately 20 regular teachers, all of whom have been assigned SIR work, leaving only 15 guest teachers to conduct classes across 22 sections.’Election duties important, but they shouldn’t come at cost of education’In the school near GTB Nagar, the official said 22 teachers have been put on BLO duty and asked how the entire regular teaching staff can be picked up for non-academic work.”It will be very difficult to teach students till Oct. Academic loss is inevitable,” the school official said.TOI reached out to the principals of both schools but received no response.Educators said the large-scale deployment could significantly disrupt classroom teaching, forcing students to bear the brunt of the staff’s absence. They argued that election-related assignments should be distributed more evenly across schools so that no single institution loses a substantial portion of its teaching staff.”If teachers have to be deployed, authorities should take a maximum of two teachers from a school. Many schools have not been asked to send even one teacher. The deployment should be distributed equally so that both election work and school education can continue,” the official argued.TOI accessed an office order for manpower requirement pertaining to nine teachers of the Bhalswa school, signed by the sub-divisional magistrate/electoral registration officer (SDM/ERO) of Badli. It states that volunteers may be required to perform full-time election duties at Voter Centres or ERO offices, including data entry, form scrutiny, clerical work and BLO-related tasks under SIR, even after normal office hours or under specific instructions, if directed by the Election Commission. Their responsibilities include verifying Forms 6 and 8, assisting in the preparation of the draft electoral roll and any other election-related work assigned by the ERO or AERO.The order added that any negligence, delay, absence or non-compliance of instructions in connection with SIR 2026 shall be viewed seriously and action shall be taken as per applicable rules.On his part, Delhi education minister Ashish Sood said govt will ensure that neither the SIR exercise nor students’ education suffer. “If by chance such anomalies have come up in some schools, we will rectify them. We have stated that teachers will be paid for election work so that they get relief and the process goes on smoothly. Even after that, if we find any problems in the system, we will work towards improving these.”Calling the SIR exercise a national responsibility, he added, “We will also take into consideration the representation sent by the govt schoolteachers and address their concerns. Education will not suffer.”Earlier in the week, Govt School Teachers’ Association (GSTA) had written to the Delhi govt stating that the prolonged deployment of teachers for election work would leave schools short-staffed during a crucial academic period. “A substantial number of trained teachers have been deployed as BLOs and BLO supervisors for the SIR exercise. Consequently, the absence of thousands of teachers from schools is likely to adversely affect the education of lakhs of students. Such academic loss cannot be adequately compensated at a later stage,” general secretary Ajay Veer Yadav wrote in the letter.The association had urged the Delhi govt to immediately appoint guest teachers against vacancies created by SIR duties to ensure regular classes continue uninterrupted, particularly for students of Classes X and XII preparing for board examinations. According to the association, the election-related assignments are expected to continue till Oct 7, making it difficult for schools to make up for the resulting academic loss later.Education activist and lawyer Ashok Agarwal said the large-scale deployment of teachers for election work had been a long-standing concern and had previously been challenged in court, though existing rules continue to permit it. “Election duties are important but these should not come at the cost of children’s education. If teachers have to be deployed, the burden should be shared across schools,” he said.Teachers say lesson planning becomes difficult when schedules are unpredictable and many teachers admit to feeling a sense of guilt about the impact on their students, even when these decisions are beyond their control. Hardeep Singh Puri NEW DELHI: Seeking to allay public fears over ethanol-blended fuel, petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri Thursday said a “make-believe” narrative had been unleashed on social media over the past few days.Addressing a press conference, the minister said the reduction in mileage of an E20-fuelled vehicle is “minor”. “It is well established that when you have ethanol in a vehicle, which they use in racing cars also, the acceleration increases, knocking improves. Mileage may drop a little, but it can happen because of many other reasons also,” he said. Puri added that insurance companies had also issued clarifications regarding vehicle coverage.Puri said his ministry had compiled a 15-page note tracing the journey of ethanol blending, listing the countries where it is practised. The note will also answer people’s concerns.The note stated that “misleading videos, selectively edited clips and sensational social media posts” were being circulated with the objective of “creating fear amongst vehicle owners” regarding the use of E20 fuel.Puri said India adopted 20% ethanol blending in petrol after consulting all stakeholders, including SIAM and ARAI, and would move to 25% blending only after completing all necessary tests. Hardeep Singh Puri NEW DELHI: Seeking to allay public fears over ethanol-blended fuel, petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri Thursday said a “make-believe” narrative had been unleashed on social media over the past few days.Addressing a press conference, the minister said the reduction in mileage of an E20-fuelled vehicle is “minor”. “It is well established that when you have ethanol in a vehicle, which they use in racing cars also, the acceleration increases, knocking improves. Mileage may drop a little, but it can happen because of many other reasons also,” he said. Puri added that insurance companies had also issued clarifications regarding vehicle coverage.Puri said his ministry had compiled a 15-page note tracing the journey of ethanol blending, listing the countries where it is practised. The note will also answer people’s concerns.The note stated that “misleading videos, selectively edited clips and sensational social media posts” were being circulated with the objective of “creating fear amongst vehicle owners” regarding the use of E20 fuel.Puri said India adopted 20% ethanol blending in petrol after consulting all stakeholders, including SIAM and ARAI, and would move to 25% blending only after completing all necessary tests. The minister said the concept of ethanol blending was not new and prominent car maker Henry Ford called it the “fuel of the future”.Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: In the first case of its kind, Supreme Court on Thursday quashed orders passed by NCLT and NCLAT on the ground that they decided a case on the basis of AI-generated non-existent case laws and verdicts, cautioning that unchecked use of AI could distort the justice delivery system.A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe cautioned both the Bar and the Bench on the use of AI, saying the human element should remain in the driving seat and have “absolute and total control over the application and usage of AI”.”For us… the production of fake, non-existent, and hallucinated material and its utilisation as precedents in law, is like the release of methyl isocyanate in the province of law and justice: invisible, insidious, and catastrophic by the time anyone notices,” Justice Narasimha said.The bench said AI was not just an aid but “an alternative to our own thinking, reasoning and even decision making”, making regulation essential. In the insolvency case, NCLT relied on AI-generated material and cited six non-existent SC judgments. The fake judgments also escaped scrutiny by NCLAT. Lawyers told the apex court they had not supplied the fake judgments and that the tribunal had obtained the material through its own research.”It is necessary for courts to adopt a zero-tolerance mode for producing, citing or using AI-generated precedents without verification,” the bench said, adding that any decision relying even partly on fake or hallucinated AI material “is no decision in the eyes of the law” and must be set aside.The court directed the Bar Council of India to constitute a committee to deliberate on the problem of lawyers submitting fake or hallucinated AI-generated material as legal precedents. It warned that delegating thinking to AI could have serious consequences for the human capacity to distinguish truth from falsehood and justice from injustice.Get the latest India news and live updates.
