Complaint filed over alleged conspiracy to topple TVK-led Vijay government NEW DELHI: The Tamil Nadu Police arrested 3 people in connection with an alleged political horse-trading bid after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA N Ilaiyaraja claimed he was offered Rs 35 crore to influence his vote on a proposed resolution in the state assembly against the Speaker.The investigation has also named former DMK minister V Senthil Balaji and his brother, V Ashok Kumar, as allegedly being linked to the conspiracy, according to a police press release issued on Wednesday. According to the complaint filed by Ilaiyaraja with the Chennai Police Commissioner on June 29, a man identified as Thirunavukkarasu contacted him claiming to head an opinion polling organisation called Indian Political Democratic Strategies (IPDS) and said he was reaching out on behalf of members of a major political party. The caller allegedly later told the TVK legislator that a resolution would be moved against the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative assembly and asked him to vote in a particular manner despite being a member of the ruling party. In return, he allegedly offered Ilaiyaraja up to Rs 35 crore. The MLA alleged that he rejected the offer and asked the caller not to contact him again. However, Thirunavukkarasu allegedly threatened him, warning that he and his family would face consequences if he disclosed the conversation.Police said the investigation later revealed that V Ashok Kumar, the brother of former DMK minister and Coimbatore South MLA V Senthil Balaji, had met Naresh in Chennai. Investigators further alleged that Thirunavukkarasu contacted Ilaiyaraja at the behest of Senthil Balaji and Ashok Kumar. The case comes months after the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, in which TVK won 108 seats in its electoral debut, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK alliances.Get the latest India news and live updates. CBI (Representative image) NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested an IPS officer in connection with an alleged Rs 3 crore bribery case linked to its probe into a fake drug manufacturing racket in Puducherry.Deepak Gahlawat, a 2012-batch Haryana-cadre IPS officer, was serving as the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security’s (BCAS) regional director at the time of the alleged offence.”During investigation, it was disclosed that the IPS officer had demanded illegal gratification claiming that he could exercise his personal influence and obtain relief for private persons in cases being investigated by CBI in relation to scale of counterfeit drugs in Puducherry,” a CBI statement read.The arrest follows an FIR registered by the agency on June 8 against Delhi Police Crime Branch Inspector Pradeep Singh, alleged middleman Rajkumar, and N Raja, a Puducherry-based businessman.Last month, the agency arrested Singh, Rajkumar, and five others in a trap operation, recovering Rs 25 lakh as trap money, another Rs 90 lakh, and incriminating documents.According to officials, Raja, the businessman, was under CBI investigation in a case registered in connection with the alleged fake drug manufacturing racket. He then approached Singh, who assured him that he could “influence the probe.”Singh then allegedly arranged a meeting between Raja and Gahlawat. During the meeting, Gahlawat demanded Rs 3 crore, including an upfront payment of Rs 1.5 crore, in exchange for a “favourable investigation.”The businessman arranged Rs 1 crore through a hawala transaction, which was handed over to Singh. Of this, Rs 50 lakh was passed on to another middleman, Prabhat, who was known to the accused public servant.”Accused Pradeep Kumar Singh kept the remaining Rs 25 lakh in his office. Police have so far arrested four accused NEW DELHI: Maharashtra BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar on Wednesday claimed that state school education minister Dada Bhuse was “unaware” that the question papers of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), which was postponed following an alleged paper leak, had been printed in Agra.Mungantiwar said Bhuse, who belongs to the Shiv Sena led by deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, “privately” admitted that he had not been informed by his department that papers were printed in Agra.”The school education minister privately admitted that his department never informed him that the (TET) examination papers were being printed in Agra. Agra has a historic connection with Maharashtra as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj escaped from there, but now the sin of an examination paper leak has also taken place there,” he told reporters on the premises of Vidhan Bhavan, where the state legislature session is currently underway.”The minister now says the examinations will be conducted online and the question papers will be prepared here. However, this exposes serious lapses in the functioning of the school education department,” he added.Mungantiwar also stated that he had urged Bhuse to conduct a thorough audit of every examination organised by the state government to ensure they were conducted fairly and peacefully, and to establish a foolproof mechanism to prevent such incidents in the future.According to investigators, the Maharashtra State Council of Examination had entrusted printing of TET papers to Mahim Patran Pvt Ltd, an Agra-based company with a corporate office in Delhi that has reportedly been printing papers for the council for nearly 25 years. After printing, the papers were despatched under security to exam centres across Maharashtra.The Maharashtra TET 2026 was postponed on June 27, a day before it was scheduled to be held, after police in Thane district found that a part of the question paper had allegedly been leaked.The development, which affected six lakh candidates, prompted opposition leaders to target the BJP-led government, alleging that it was focused on breaking political parties instead of ensuring foolproof examinations. The remarks were in reference to the recent defection of leaders from Shiv Sena (UBT) to Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, a BJP ally.In connection with the alleged leak, Bhiwandi Police in Thane district have so far arrested four persons, originally from Bihar and Haryana, including the wife of one of the absconding accused. An SIT is investigating the case after a preliminary probe indicated the involvement of an inter-state racket.The controversy has gained significance amid wider political attacks over examination paper leaks, with the BJP-led Union government also facing criticism over the NEET-UG examination paper leak in May. Police have so far arrested four accused NEW DELHI: Maharashtra BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar on Wednesday claimed that state school education minister Dada Bhuse was “unaware” that the question papers of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), which was postponed following an alleged paper leak, had been printed in Agra.Mungantiwar said Bhuse, who belongs to the Shiv Sena led by deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, “privately” admitted that he had not been informed by his department that papers were printed in Agra.”The school education minister privately admitted that his department never informed him that the (TET) examination papers were being printed in Agra. Agra has a historic connection with Maharashtra as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj escaped from there, but now the sin of an examination paper leak has also taken place there,” he told reporters on the premises of Vidhan Bhavan, where the state legislature session is currently underway.”The minister now says the examinations will be conducted online and the question papers will be prepared here. However, this exposes serious lapses in the functioning of the school education department,” he added.Mungantiwar also stated that he had urged Bhuse to conduct a thorough audit of every examination organised by the state government to ensure they were conducted fairly and peacefully, and to establish a foolproof mechanism to prevent such incidents in the future.According to investigators, the Maharashtra State Council of Examination had entrusted printing of TET papers to Mahim Patran Pvt Ltd, an Agra-based company with a corporate office in Delhi that has reportedly been printing papers for the council for nearly 25 years. After printing, the papers were despatched under security to exam centres across Maharashtra.The Maharashtra TET 2026 was postponed on June 27, a day before it was scheduled to be held, after police in Thane district found that a part of the question paper had allegedly been leaked.The development, which affected six lakh candidates, prompted opposition leaders to target the BJP-led government, alleging that it was focused on breaking political parties instead of ensuring foolproof examinations. The remarks were in reference to the recent defection of leaders from Shiv Sena (UBT) to Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, a BJP ally.In connection with the alleged leak, Bhiwandi Police in Thane district have so far arrested four persons, originally from Bihar and Haryana, including the wife of one of the absconding accused. An SIT is investigating the case after a preliminary probe indicated the involvement of an inter-state racket.The controversy has gained significance amid wider political attacks over examination paper leaks, with the BJP-led Union government also facing criticism over the NEET-UG examination paper leak in May. TVK ,DMK trade horse trading allegations (Photo credit: Agencies) CHENNAI: Horse trading allegations flew thick and fast in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday as the ruling TVK and opposition DMK accused each other of trying to poach their MLAs. While TVK linked the ‘attempt to topple TVK govt’ to former minister V Senthil Balaji, DMK complained that chief minister C Joseph Vijay and MDMK chief Vaiko conspired to `poach two DMK MLAs.’Based on the complaint from TVK Uthangarai MLA N Ilayaraja that he was contacted by an individual identified as Thirunavukkarasu to vote against the Tamil Nadu assembly speaker in a proposed motion of confidence, the police arrested three people including Thirunavukkarasu, accusing them of attempting to induce TVK MLAs. Thirunavukkarasu promised Rs 35 crore in return, said the complaint.A police statement said one of the arrested Naresh from Trichy had met Senthilbalaji’s brother V Ashok Kumar in Chennai. Preliminary inquiries have revealed that it was on behalf of Senthil Balaji and Ashok Kumar that Thirunavukkarasu had contacted MLA Ilayaraja, the statement said.”Why are Stalin (former chief minister) and Udhayanidhi Stalin so desperate to topple TVK govt?” asked State electricity minister R Nirmal Kumar. He said not just Ilayaraja but several TVK MLAs were contacted by the accused promising upto Rs 50 crore.Meanwhile, DMK organising secretary R S Bharathi submitted a complaint to governor R V Arlekar accusing Vijay of attempting to induce ‘two DMK MLAs’ and get them resign. The two MLAs were from MDMK who contested in DMK’s Rising Sun symbol in the assembly election. Bharathi quoted MDMK general secretary Vaiko’s statement that Vijay had offered to campaign and ensure their victory in the by election if the two MLAs resigned their post. Though MDMK quit the DMK front and supported TVK, the two MLAs – T M Rajendran (Kadayanallur) and Senthilselvan (Sirkazhi) refused to resign. All the four candidates fielded by MDMK under DMK alliance in the elections had contested in DMK’s symbol.”Vijay, by abusing his position as CM, had promised Vaiko that if these two MLAs resign they would be relected in subsequent by elections and that the govt may provide monetary assistance. This assurance establishes a clear attempt at horse trading,” Bharathi said in the complaint, calling it an attempt to reduce DMK’s strength in the assembly.
