You heard about it from a colleague who had family there, or from someone who had driven up on a whim and stayed longer than planned. There were no listicles. No reels on social media. A travel influencer visits, posts a reel that racks up a few hundred thousand views, and suddenly a place that received a few thousand visitors a year is fielding ten times that number in a single season.Social media doesn’t just spread information about a place, it manufactures aspiration around it.Budget airlines accelerated this in ways that are easy to underestimate. When airlines open a new route, it doesn’t just make a destination more accessible, it makes it accessible to an entirely different kind of traveler, one who might not have considered the place at all if it had required a long train journey or an overnight bus. Connectivity compresses distance, and compressed distance compresses the timeline from discovery to overcrowding.Social media does something slightly different. It doesn’t just spread information about a place, it manufactures aspiration around it. A photograph of Dzukou Valley or Tirthan Valley isn’t just a photograph. It functions as a kind of social signal, proof of taste, proof of having gone somewhere others haven’t yet. The problem is that once enough people have posted that photograph, the signal stops working. The destination has to be replaced by another. And then another.Travel platforms and aggregators complete the loop. A destination trends on Instagram, gets picked up by a travel blog, finds its way onto a “hidden gems” list on a booking platform, and within a season or two, the homestay that once had two rooms has expanded to twelve. The roads get widened. A café opens. Then another.None of this happens slowly anymore.For Sanghrita, a Kolkata-based media professional who has been to Darjeeling twice, the decision to go further came from familiarity. “I have been to Darjeeling twice already. The toy train, the Tiger Hill sunrise, the Chowrasta, I love all of it, but I knew it by heart,” she says. A friend’s offhand mention of Kolakham, quiet, unhurried, no mall road, was all it took.Kolakham delivered. But it was Jorpokhri, a small protected lake village a little further up, that stayed with her. “You can see Kanchenjunga on a clear morning without fighting anyone for the view,” she says. The operative phrase being, for now. On that same trip, she noticed newer homestays coming up, groups arriving that were larger than the roads seemed built for. “It hasn’t become as mainstream yet, but you can feel it might,” she says. It is a sentence that could apply to almost every offbeat destination in India at this precise moment.So who pays the price?Tourism has always been sold as a good news story. Jobs created, local economies boosted, forgotten places finally getting their due. And there is truth in that, a well-run homestay in Sangla or a locally owned café in Ziro does put money directly into the hands of the people who live there. But the fuller picture is more complicated, and the places that have lived with mass tourism the longest are the ones saying so most loudly.In Spain, residents of Barcelona and the Canary Islands have taken to the streets in protest. In Amsterdam, the city government has actively tried to discourage certain kinds of tourists from coming at all. In small British coastal towns like Whitby and St Ives, the damage is quieter but no less real — useful shops replaced by souvenir stores, roads choked through summer, streets hollow through winter, and housing prices pushed beyond the reach of the people who actually live and work there year-round. The short-term rental market, fed by tourism demand, has made it more lucrative for landlords to list on Airbnb than to rent to a local family. The town fills up for a season and empties out into something that no longer quite resembles a community.The question of responsibility does not have a clean answer, and most honest travelers will tell you so.India has not yet seen protests of that scale, but the early signs are visible. In Manali and Kasol, locals speak of rivers that run darker during peak season. In Coorg, plantation owners describe the noise and litter that now accompanies what were once quiet estate visits. India is large enough and uneven enough in its infrastructure that there will always be places that remain difficult to reach, and difficulty of access remains the most reliable filter for crowds. The red pandas of Jorpokhri and the living root bridges of Meghalaya survive, in part, because getting there still requires effort. But infrastructure has a way of catching up. Roads get built. But the fuller picture is more complicated, and the places that have lived with mass tourism the longest are the ones saying so most loudly.In Spain, residents of Barcelona and the Canary Islands have taken to the streets in protest. In Amsterdam, the city government has actively tried to discourage certain kinds of tourists from coming at all. In small British coastal towns like Whitby and St Ives, the damage is quieter but no less real — useful shops replaced by souvenir stores, roads choked through summer, streets hollow through winter, and housing prices pushed beyond the reach of the people who actually live and work there year-round. The short-term rental market, fed by tourism demand, has made it more lucrative for landlords to list on Airbnb than to rent to a local family. The town fills up for a season and empties out into something that no longer quite resembles a community.The question of responsibility does not have a clean answer, and most honest travelers will tell you so.India has not yet seen protests of that scale, but the early signs are visible. He said people have not only supported his requests but are actively implementing them in their daily lives.Addressing the nation during the 135th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Modi said, “In view of the prevalent war-like situation in West Asia, I had urged countrymen on a few points. I had asked people to avoid buying gold for some time, as far as possible. I am grateful to every citizen of the country; not only have they supported my appeal, they are also actively cooperating in every way.”The Prime Minister’s remarks come months after he urged citizens to adopt measures such as reducing fuel consumption, opting for carpooling, avoiding non-essential foreign travel, choosing Swadeshi products, cutting cooking oil consumption, embracing natural farming and temporarily curbing gold purchases amid heightened tensions in the region.Highlighting the public response, PM Modi said many citizens had shared their experiences through messages and social media. He noted that people travelling in the same direction daily had increasingly begun carpooling instead of using separate vehicles.”Many families have shared their experiences with me through messages. People have shared many experiences regarding carpooling as well. Those who used to travel in their own vehicles in the same direction every day have now started commuting together,” he said.On his appeal to reduce gold purchases, PM Modi said several families had decided against buying new gold even for weddings, choosing instead to recycle existing jewellery.”Numerous families have decided not to buy gold for weddings in their homes this time; if the need arises, they would recycle old gold to create new jewellery. Many people have even written on social media how they have postponed their foreign travel this time,” he said.Meanwhile, market analysts expect gold prices to remain volatile in the coming weeks amid global macroeconomic uncertainty. NEW DELHI: Amid the alleged donation embezzlement row in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and advised him to visit the Ram Temple.While addressing a gathering in Hathras, Adityanath accused the previous Samajwadi Party government of opening fire on devotees of Lord Ram.”I was reading a statement by SP President Akhilesh Yadav yesterday. He was saying that if his government came to power, he would transform Ayodhya into a ‘religious city.’ What kind of religious city would you create? It was your government, the SP government, that opened fire on the devotees of Lord Ram. You lack the courage; apart from kneeling before Mullahs and Maulvis, you have no agenda for the state’s development or for upholding the identity of Ayodhya, Mathura, and Kashi,” Adityanath said.”Today, when our public representatives were saying that more than 22 temples in Hathras were beautified, was this possible during the Samajwadi Party’s time? Was it not during their time? Because at that time, this money went towards the boundary walls of kabristans. And that very money we have diverted towards temples. We have sent that same money here, because temples are the centres of faith. Akhilesh, Ayodhya has been adorned and beautified by the devotees of Lord Ram. You don’t worry about it. Do penance. Have darshan of Ramlala once. At least this will bring some good sense, and now prepare so that we may also do something for Krishna Kanhaiya,” he added.Earlier, Akhilesh targeted Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and questioned his repeated visits to Ayodhya, asking whether they were meant to “oversee ongoing thefts.”Taking a swipe at the chief minister, Akhilesh referred to the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which reportedly found that CCTV footage had been tampered with, and questioned how the alleged irregularities went unnoticed despite Adityanath’s frequent visits to the temple.”The SIT report itself indicates that CCTV footage was tampered with. Was the chief minister setting a record for the number of visits to Ayodhya just to oversee ongoing theft? Why is it that, despite making so many visits, he remained unaware of the activities taking place within the temple complex?” the former UP chief minister told news agency ANI.The Samajwadi Party chief also criticised the quality of development in Ayodhya, saying it had fallen short of expectations for a global pilgrimage destination.”The development and work carried out in Ayodhya fell short of expectations. A place visited by people from across the globe should feature world-class infrastructure, and the devotees arriving with faith deserve international-standard amenities,” he said.This comes after Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Trust General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra resigned, taking moral responsibility in connection with the alleged Ram Temple donation theft case.Meanwhile, a court in Ayodhya on Friday remanded eight accused to judicial custody till June 29 in the alleged Ram Mandir donation embezzlement case. According to officials, those arrested are Avinash Shukla, Ankalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, Rama Shankar Mishra, Subhash Srivastava, and Rama Shankar alias Tinnu.Get the latest India news and live updates. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conferred the ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, during his visit to Seychelles, was conferred the ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’, highest distinction for leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development.Accepting the honour, PM Modi dedicated it to countries combating climate change and reaffirmed India’s commitment to environmental stewardship and global cooperation.”It is a matter of immense pride and joy for me and for the 1.4 billion people of India to be honoured with the title of ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon.’ I humbly accept this honour and dedicate it to all those nations that are battling the challenge of climate change and view environmental conservation as a responsibility towards future generations,” he said.Highlights 50 years of India-Seychelles partnershipWhile addressing the press statement, PM Modi noted that his visit coincides with two significant milestones, the Golden Jubilee of Seychelles’ independence and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.”My visit takes place at a historic juncture as Seychelles marks 50 years of its independence, and we celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles. Over the course of these 50 years, we have transformed friendship into trust, trust into cooperation, and cooperation into public welfare,” he said.Emphasising the historic maritime links between the two nations, the Prime Minister said the Indian Ocean has nurtured India-Seychelles ties for centuries by facilitating trade, cultural exchanges and people-to-people connections.Says MAHASAGAR vision anchors India-Seychelles cooperation Addressing the press further, PM Modi said India and Seychelles view the Indian Ocean as a shared home, with its security, sustainability and prosperity being a collective responsibility, adding that this vision forms the foundation of India’s MAHASAGAR initiative.”We believe the Indian Ocean is our shared home; its security, sustainability, and prosperity are our shared responsibility.
