Picture from X NEW DELHI: India has launched Operation Amistad as a humanitarian relief and rescue mission in the wake of the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela.Venezuela was hit by two powerful earthquakes in the northern part of the country, killing over 1,400 people and causing widespread destruction.The humanitarian mission was announced by the ministry of external affairs.As part of the mission, two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft departed for Venezuela on June 26 carrying relief supplies, a 41-member Indian Army medical and rescue team, and two BHISHM Cube portable hospitals, the MEA said.The relief package includes 30 tonnes of humanitarian supplies, six tonnes of medicines and medical equipment, and a self-sufficient Indian Army Field Hospital capable of providing emergency medical care, trauma management and life-saving surgical support.The 41-member contingent comprises rescue personnel and medical professionals, including nine medical officers, who will assist Venezuelan authorities in search and rescue operations, emergency healthcare and humanitarian relief efforts.The Indian Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire said the two aircraft transited through Abidjan before continuing to Venezuela.In a post on X, the embassy said, “Operation Amistad – Responding to the devastating earthquake that struck northern Venezuela, the two Indian Airforce C17s transited through Abidjan enroute to Venezuela carrying 35 T of relief equipment, an Indian Army Field Hospital contingent and two BHISHM cubes. The contingent comprises 41 personnel, including nine medical officers, and is equipped to provide emergency medical care, trauma management, life-saving surgical support and other essential healthcare services to those affected by the earthquake. Eknath Shinde reacts to Uddhav Thackeray, Devendra Fadnavis sharing flight NEW DELHI: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde took a swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, saying chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is “a very clever person” who knows “how dangerous a scheming friend could be.”Shinde’s remarks came on Saturday, a day after Fadnavis and Thackeray travelled together on a flight from Mumbai to Nagpur, triggering political speculation over the unexpected meeting between the two rivals.“Fadnavis is a very clever person. Bhagwant Mann, Arvind Kejriwal (Bhagwant Mann as AAP ministers set to appear before Akal Takht on June 29) NEW DELHI: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said all Sikh MLAs and Sikh cabinet ministers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will appear before the Akal Takht in Amritsar on June 29 to present the Punjab government’s position on the anti-sacrilege law.Mann also said he would send a purported video clip and submit his explanation in writing to the Sikh body’s highest temporal seat.”Our MLAs and cabinet ministers will present the government side. Punjab Assembly Speaker (Kultar Singh Sandhwan) will also go. Whatever suggestions come from the Akal Takht or SGPC, we will discuss the same,” Mann told reporters in Amritsar while accompanied by AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal.The Akal Takht Jathedar, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, had on June 15 summoned all Sikh MLAs, irrespective of party affiliation, and Sikh ministers to appear before the Akal Takht on June 29 over the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026. Non-Sikh ministers have been asked to submit their views in writing before June 29.The Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) have objected to the anti-sacrilege legislation, saying it was enacted without consulting the Sikh Panth. The Akal Takht had also asked the Punjab government to remove provisions from the Act that it said were “against the Guru Granth Sahib, the Khalsa Panth and the sentiments of the ‘Sangat’ (Sikh community).”Replying to a question on whether he would personally appear before the Akal Takht, Mann said he had not been summoned.Addressing questions about a purported video linked to the controversy, the chief minister said he would forward the clip to the Akal Takht and submit his version of events in writing.Mann said he will also present his side in a written format to the highest temporal seat of Sikhs.He said he could never think of confronting the Akal Takht.Mann also recalled that when he appeared before the Akal Takht in January, he had maintained that he was not the person seen in the video.The Sikh clergy on June 15 declared Mann as ‘Guru Dokhi’ (anti-Guru) and ‘Khalsa Panth Virodhi’ (anti-Khalsa Panth) over the controversial video after the Akal Takht said two forensic laboratories had found the clip to be “authentic”.The controversy dates back to January, when the Akal Takht summoned Mann over alleged remarks on ‘Guru ki Golak’ (gurdwara donation box) and over “objectionable activities” involving pictures of the Sikh Gurus and slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the purported video.Mann, however, reiterated that he was not in the alleged objectionable video and claimed that the person seen in the clip was wearing a mask resembling his face.Get the latest India news and live updates. Kailash Vijayvargiya’s comments spark row NEW DELHI: Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has triggered a political controversy after claiming that administrative officials in the state have been competing to demonstrate their affiliation with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since the BJP came to power.”When we were in the government, some officer came and said, ‘Sir, I used to go to the shakha.’ Hey, you go now… You never told me before our government came to power,” PTI quoted him saying.”Every officer and employee thinks this…After the government came to power, everyone became part of the RSS. Every officer became part of the RSS,” he said.Vijayvargiya also narrated how one official claimed that his father had been the president of an RSS shakha, even though, according to the minister, no such position exists within the organisation.At the same event, the minister lamented what he described as a shortage of committed workers in the RSS despite its expanding reach. According to him, ‘After the government was formed, officials have started describing themselves as affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh!'” he said.”If such a trend of identification is growing within the administrative machinery, then this is not merely a political comment, but a deep and serious issue connected to the impartiality, neutrality, and constitutional propriety of the Indian administrative system! The Constitution of India expects that every official of the government remain loyal to the Constitution, not to any political or ideological organization! Kailash Vijayvargiya’s comments spark row NEW DELHI: Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has triggered a political controversy after claiming that administrative officials in the state have been competing to demonstrate their affiliation with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since the BJP came to power.”When we were in the government, some officer came and said, ‘Sir, I used to go to the shakha.’ Hey, you go now… You never told me before our government came to power,” PTI quoted him saying.”Every officer and employee thinks this…After the government came to power, everyone became part of the RSS. Every officer became part of the RSS,” he said.Vijayvargiya also narrated how one official claimed that his father had been the president of an RSS shakha, even though, according to the minister, no such position exists within the organisation.At the same event, the minister lamented what he described as a shortage of committed workers in the RSS despite its expanding reach. The organisation is growing, and its ideology is also growing. But if there are no good people, then we should reflect and ponder over the importance of that ideology.”The remarks, made during a memorial event for a former RSS pracharak on Friday, drew sharp criticism from the Congress, which alleged that the statement raised serious questions about the neutrality of the bureaucracy and the constitutional functioning of the administrative system.Madhya Pradesh Congress committee chief Jitu Patwari shared a video of Vijayvargiya’s speech on X and called it a “matter of constitutional concern.””The public statement by Shri Kailash Vijayvargiya, cabinet minister of the Madhya Pradesh Government, raises an extremely serious constitutional question! According to him, ‘After the government was formed, officials have started describing themselves as affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh!'” he said.”If such a trend of identification is growing within the administrative machinery, then this is not merely a political comment, but a deep and serious issue connected to the impartiality, neutrality, and constitutional propriety of the Indian administrative system! The Constitution of India expects that every official of the government remain loyal to the Constitution, not to any political or ideological organization!
