Craig Gillespie reveals why David Corenswet’s Superman cameo matters in Milly Alcock’s ‘Supergirl’: ‘To bounce against her moral compass’
The interconnected universe of DC continues to expand with meaningful crossovers between its flagship characters. After ‘Supergirl’ made an appearance in David Corenswet’s Superman standalone film, the Man of Steel reciprocates with substantial appearances in Milly Alcock’s ‘Supergirl’, which opened in theaters this weekend.Superman’s involvement in ‘Supergirl’ extends beyond a simple cameo appearance. Corenswet’s Kal-El opens the film via a video message to his cousin Kara, checking in on her whereabouts after her birthday celebration. The character resurfaces in a significant flashback sequence depicting Kara’s initial arrival on Earth, a moment marked by a language barrier between the two cousins. The Kryptonian-fluent Supergirl struggles to communicate with her English-speaking cousin, who was raised in Smallville, Kansas. Additional scenes featuring the dynamic between the two characters are woven throughout the narrative.
Director Craig Gillespie on Superman’s role in the story
Director Craig Gillespie articulated the narrative importance of Superman’s presence in the film during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Rather than viewing Superman as mere decoration, Gillespie positioned the character as essential to Supergirl’s internal conflict and moral development.“It’s kind of the touchstone to bounce against her moral compass that she’s going through and her conflict,” Gillespie explained. “They talk about it a bit there. That opening scene, the discussion was, ‘Do we actually do a scene with them together?’ Because we have that later in the film, even though chronologically it’s earlier.”

The director described the deliberate creative choices made regarding how and when the two characters would interact on screen. “But I liked that it was on a video conference call and we really stay in Kara’s world. It gives you a little more surprise when you finally do see them together in person later in the movie. So there were conversations about that and how to physically do it. When do we put them together? When is it dialogue? When is it voice machines?” Gillespie continued, detailing the technical and narrative considerations that informed the structure of Superman’s appearances.
The story of Supergirl’s galactic mission
‘Supergirl’, inspired by the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ comic series, follows Kara on an intergalactic journey that takes a serious turn when she encounters a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll from a farming planet. Ruthye seeks assistance in avenging the slaughter of her family, perpetrated by a villain known as Krem of the Yellow Hills.Initially hesitant to engage in such a mission, Supergirl becomes motivated to act when Krem poisons her dog Krypto, giving her only three days to locate and obtain the antidote that Krem possesses on his person.
Milly Alcock’s experience working with David Corenswet
Milly Alcock reflected on her experience working opposite David Corenswet, particularly during the early filming stages when her character had not yet learned English and was still acclimating to Earth. The first day of filming on ‘Supergirl’ involved the scene in which Kara’s pod lands in the Arctic and Superman directs her toward the Fortress of Solitude.“I was in the pod, and I wasn’t speaking English. I was like, ‘Who is Kara?’ ‘Cause the first week was me not playing Kara when we meet her,” Alcock recalled of the filming process. “So I was really panicking over if I could do this.”

Alcock credited Corenswet with providing crucial support during this uncertain period. “But David was there. I said to David, ‘How do I do this? What should I do?’ And he was very helpful with everything,” she said. “It was nice to have him come back in and play against the natural tension that is created between Clark and Kara. That was really fun, honestly.”Gillespie acknowledged that the confusion Alcock experienced during filming actually served the character development. “That confusion was great for the character,” the director said.
The dynamic between David Corenswet’s Superman and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl
Director Gillespie characterised the relationship between the two Kryptonian cousins as fundamentally important to understanding both characters. “This fun, almost sibling relationship,” Gillespie described the dynamic between Clark and Kara, emphasising the warmth and familiarity despite their different upbringings and perspectives.Alcock expressed her enthusiasm for the pairing while remaining cautious about discussing future plans. “I would really love to see more of Clark and Kara together, but I don’t make those choices, unfortunately,” she said. “I think they’re really fun together. They’re interesting.”
Future appearances confirmed for the characters
Supergirl is confirmed to return in ‘Man of Tomorrow’, the follow-up Superman film that is currently in production. This announcement ensures that the dynamic between Clark and Kara will continue to develop across the interconnected narrative being constructed by the studio.
