New Delhi: BJP Wednesday accused Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his son Priyank, a Karnataka minister, of “land grab” in their home state for ostensible purposes as diverse as setting up of ventures in aerospace and defence and promotion of the Pali language.It is the Congress dispensation in the state that has enriched them through their family trust, BJP alleged, marking an apparent distinction with the charges against Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav’s extended family members allegedly purchasing several chunks of private land since he took office in 2023. It also said, “Public land that was earlier (Karnataka) govt’s and public property was handed over to Mallikarjun Kharge’s private trust.”Stepping up its attack, Congress accused BJP and RSS of patronising corruption, while seeking a SC inquiry into the MP issue. MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari said there are many instances where powerful people in the state have bought land in areas where new roads and highways are to be constructed. Daring the Congress govt in Karnataka to take action against the Kharges, BJP said, “Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyank Kharge have created a new modus operandi of land grab in Karnataka under the name of Siddharth Vihara Trust, which reminds of the Gandhi-Vadra family’s land grab.” The party has dismissed the charges against Mohan Yadav as baseless.BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said, “Valuable lands were given to the trust, whose members also include Congress president’s wife and son-in-law, in Bengaluru, Gulbarga, and Banashankari.” He added, “Did Mallikarjun Kharge use his power and influence? Did Priyank Kharge use his power and influence? Was Karnataka’s five acres of industrial land, worth Rs 100 crore, privately grabbed.” In 2024, Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board allotted five acres of land to the trust for the purpose of undertaking research and development in aerospace and defence sectors even though it has no link with the field, he said.Get the latest India news and live updates. An FIR has been registered at PS Islamabad in Amritsar under relevant sections of the NDPS Act, Arms Act and other penal provisions.Investigation ongoingPolice said further investigation is underway to establish backward and forward linkages, identify additional associates connected with the foreign-based network, and ascertain further recoveries and arrests.Authorities are also probing the role of the Afghan national and the juvenile in the network, and whether the consignments originated from across the border. ANI New Delhi: A simple calculator developed by Indian researchers can predict which tuberculosis (TB) patients are at the highest risk of death at the time of diagnosis itself, according to a study published in BMJ Open. Researchers say the tool could help identify high-risk patients early and support efforts to reduce TB deaths.The tool, developed by researchers from the ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), Chennai, and the Tamil Nadu TB programme, uses basic clinical measurements routinely available when a patient is diagnosed with TB. The authors say it could be useful in resource-constrained settings seeking scalable, data-driven interventions to reduce TB mortality.The study analysed data from 55,971 adult TB patients notified from public health facilities across Tamil Nadu between July 2022 and June 2023. It found that 7.4 per cent of patients died within a year of diagnosis, with nearly 68 per cent of those deaths occurring within the first two months.The calculator relies on simple indicators such as body mass index (BMI), oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, pedal oedema and the patient’s ability to stand without support. When combined with age, sex, site of disease, previous treatment history and microbiological confirmation, the model was able to accurately predict the risk of death.Researchers found that these simple triage indicators performed almost as well as more complex models based on multiple variables available later through the government’s Ni-kshay TB database.The authors have recommended that severe-illness indicators be routinely captured at the time of TB diagnosis. They also developed a TB death prediction calculator based on these variables for prospective use at diagnosis.The study was led by researchers including Suseendar Shanmugasundaram, Dr Hemant Deepak Shewade and colleagues from ICMR-NIE, Chennai, along with officials from the Tamil Nadu TB programme. Senior author Dr Manoj V Murhekar, Director of ICMR-NIE, was among the researchers involved in the work.India accounts for the world’s largest TB burden and reducing TB mortality remains a major public health challenge despite improvements in diagnosis and treatment. When combined with age, sex, site of disease, previous treatment history and microbiological confirmation, the model was able to accurately predict the risk of death.Researchers found that these simple triage indicators performed almost as well as more complex models based on multiple variables available later through the government’s Ni-kshay TB database.The authors have recommended that severe-illness indicators be routinely captured at the time of TB diagnosis. They also developed a TB death prediction calculator based on these variables for prospective use at diagnosis.The study was led by researchers including Suseendar Shanmugasundaram, Dr Hemant Deepak Shewade and colleagues from ICMR-NIE, Chennai, along with officials from the Tamil Nadu TB programme. Senior author Dr Manoj V Murhekar, Director of ICMR-NIE, was among the researchers involved in the work.India accounts for the world’s largest TB burden and reducing TB mortality remains a major public health challenge despite improvements in diagnosis and treatment.
