NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi Wednesday said it was because of the “whole-of-govt” approach that the challenging task of holding a hassle-free NEET-UG retest could be completed, as he hailed the collective efforts of different ministries and departments for the June 21 exam’s smooth conduct.Modi made these remarks while chairing a cabinet meeting, where Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan briefed ministers about the massive operation for the retest. It was also the third-oldest railway workshop in undivided India.But its story runs beyond machines and tracks. British and Jewish engineers, Parsi technicians, and workers from present-day UP, Gujarat, Kerala and Maharashtra didn’t just work here — they settled, built homes, and formed communities. Over time, their presence gave Ajmer a distinctly cosmopolitan character, still visible in colonial bungalows, old railway institutes, churches, the Jewish cemetery near Ana Sagar, Parsi fire temples, and markets shaped by trading families like the Agarwals.Some railway colonies still carry fading Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway (BB&CI) markings on their walls. In older neighbourhoods near the workshop, rusted iron gates, century-old rainwater pipes and sloping tiled roofs survive amid newer construction. In many ways, the workshop became the centre around which modern Ajmer grew.The workshop’s arc also mirrors national history: from building India’s first indigenously made steam locomotive in 1895 to becoming a munitions hub during WW-I. During the war years, it produced artillery like 12-pounder guns and thousands of howitzer shells, and built fully equipped armoured trains fitted with machine guns and communication systems for deployment in war zones such as Mesopotamia.But the workshop’s most enduring impact may be social. As the railway network drew people from across India and abroad, Ajmer became one of Rajasthan’s earliest cosmopolitan cities.Enduring SignsBritish and Anglo-Indian communities established clubs, churches and residential colonies that shaped Ajmer’s colonial character. The Railway Institute became a major social centre with ballrooms, and sports and cultural events.The workshop also reshaped Ajmer’s urban landscape: planned colonies, churches, officers’ bungalows and institutional campuses grew around the railway zone, leaving a colonial imprint that still survives in parts of the city.Ajmer railway workshopBengalis arrived largely as teachers, clerks and railway officials. Institutions like Mayo College attracted Bengali educators who contributed to literature, theatre and music in the city. Gujarati traders expanded businesses in textiles, grain trade and transport, while Agarwal businessmen became deeply linked with Ajmer’s commercial economy.Prashant Patel, a fourth-generation Gujarati tobacco businessman, recalled stories of his great-grandfather, who moved from Gujarat to Ajmer for business after the railways arrived. “Ajmer embraced us like its own. Not only have we preserved our cultural practices, but Gujarati continues to be widely spoken in Ajmer’s trading communities,” said Patel.Sister Pearl, principal of Sophia College, said the railways also helped seed institutions such as Mayo College, Sophia College, St. Anselm’s School and several convent schools, laying the foundation for the city’s educational culture. “Even the railways opened a school for British children and others. The attendance sheets are still preserved, and many people who spent their childhood here continue to visit the place,” she said.Parsis played an important role in the workshop’s technical development, arriving as engineers, technicians and supervisors. Their mechanical expertise made them indispensable in the early decades of railway expansion. Hosi Dorabshah, 78, living in Mount Abu, represents the fourth generation of his family to serve in railways. “My great-grandfather came to Ajmer from Gujarat and served in the railways. I also retired as a guard,” he said.Calling himself part of the “last generation” of Parsis in railway service, Dorabshah said there are now around 28 Parsis living in Mount Abu and about 15 in Ajmer — among the last remaining members of the community in the state. “My children have discontinued the tradition of joining the railways, and I expect that the younger generation will eventually move to Mumbai or Gujarat,” said Dorabshah.Many old Parsi and AngloIndian homes now stand locked or have been sold as younger generations migrate to Mumbai, Pune and abroad. Some railway quarters that once housed large Parsi families are now occupied by elderly couples or caretakers.Ajmer’s small Jewish community also arrived in the railway era. Nearly 300-400 Jews once lived in the city, many linked to railways. Today, the Jewish cemetery near Ana Sagar remains among the few visible traces of Rajasthan’s Jewish heritage.The workshop has continued evolving with railway technology. From nearly 15,000 at its early-20th-century peak, the workforce now stands at around 4,500 due to modernisation, and restructuring. NCERT Textbooks adds a new section on Emergency New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has, for the first time, introduced a section on the Emergency in a Class IX textbook, describing it as “one of the major challenges” to Indian democracy during a period when a majority of Fundamental Rights were suspended.The reference has been included in NCERT’s newly developed social science textbook, Understanding Society: India and Beyond, within a chapter that examines the strengths of Indian democracy alongside the challenges it has faced.An NCERT official confirmed that this is the first time a dedicated section on the Emergency has been included in a Class IX textbook. according to news agency ANI.The development comes exactly 51 years after the proclamation of the Emergency in India on June 25, 1975, and a year after the country marked its 50th anniversary.”One of the major challenges to democracy in India was recorded when an Emergency was imposed in 1975-77. In the early 1970s, public dissatisfaction with the government led by Indira Gandhi was growing. Rising unemployment, inflation, and allegations of misgovernance led to widespread protests,” the textbook section reads.The chapter further notes, “In June 1975, a National Emergency was imposed by the government on the grounds of internal disturbance. During this period, a majority of Fundamental Rights were suspended, the press was censored, and numerous political leaders and activists were arrested. Democratic institutions came under severe strain, and citizens’ freedom was restricted.”The textbook also highlighted the role of Jayaprakash Narayan in mobilising opposition to the Emergency.It notes that mass movements led by Jayaprakash Narayan, popularly known as ‘lok nayak’, mobilised students and citizens, particularly in Bihar and Gujarat. It adds that after the Emergency was lifted in 1977 and general elections were held, “the defeat of the ruling government demonstrated the strength of Indian democracy and highlighted the importance of Democracy.”The section forms part of a broader discussion on challenges facing democratic systems. Alongside the Emergency, the chapter identifies fake news, misinformation, damaging public property, violation of public rules, poverty, regionalism, social discrimination and gender inequality as challenges to democratic practice.The revised textbook also features a new section, ‘Democracy and You’, introduced for the first time to help students relate classroom lessons to their responsibilities as citizens and active participants in democratic processes.Beyond the Emergency, the book places emphasis on India’s democratic traditions, institutions and citizen participation. It includes a section describing the media as the ‘fourth pillar of democracy’ and highlights its role in amplifying public concerns and safeguarding democratic values.The Emergency period between June 1975 and March 1977 saw the suspension of fundamental rights, increased preventive detentions, restrictions on the media and constitutional amendments that altered institutional powers. A large-scale sterilisation programme was implemented during the period. NCERT Textbooks adds a new section on Emergency New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has, for the first time, introduced a section on the Emergency in a Class IX textbook, describing it as “one of the major challenges” to Indian democracy during a period when a majority of Fundamental Rights were suspended.The reference has been included in NCERT’s newly developed social science textbook, Understanding Society: India and Beyond, within a chapter that examines the strengths of Indian democracy alongside the challenges it has faced.An NCERT official confirmed that this is the first time a dedicated section on the Emergency has been included in a Class IX textbook. according to news agency ANI.The development comes exactly 51 years after the proclamation of the Emergency in India on June 25, 1975, and a year after the country marked its 50th anniversary.”One of the major challenges to democracy in India was recorded when an Emergency was imposed in 1975-77. In the early 1970s, public dissatisfaction with the government led by Indira Gandhi was growing. Rising unemployment, inflation, and allegations of misgovernance led to widespread protests,” the textbook section reads.The chapter further notes, “In June 1975, a National Emergency was imposed by the government on the grounds of internal disturbance. During this period, a majority of Fundamental Rights were suspended, the press was censored, and numerous political leaders and activists were arrested. Democratic institutions came under severe strain, and citizens’ freedom was restricted.”The textbook also highlighted the role of Jayaprakash Narayan in mobilising opposition to the Emergency.It notes that mass movements led by Jayaprakash Narayan, popularly known as ‘lok nayak’, mobilised students and citizens, particularly in Bihar and Gujarat. It adds that after the Emergency was lifted in 1977 and general elections were held, “the defeat of the ruling government demonstrated the strength of Indian democracy and highlighted the importance of Democracy.”The section forms part of a broader discussion on challenges facing democratic systems. Alongside the Emergency, the chapter identifies fake news, misinformation, damaging public property, violation of public rules, poverty, regionalism, social discrimination and gender inequality as challenges to democratic practice.The revised textbook also features a new section, ‘Democracy and You’, introduced for the first time to help students relate classroom lessons to their responsibilities as citizens and active participants in democratic processes.Beyond the Emergency, the book places emphasis on India’s democratic traditions, institutions and citizen participation. It includes a section describing the media as the ‘fourth pillar of democracy’ and highlights its role in amplifying public concerns and safeguarding democratic values.The Emergency period between June 1975 and March 1977 saw the suspension of fundamental rights, increased preventive detentions, restrictions on the media and constitutional amendments that altered institutional powers. A large-scale sterilisation programme was implemented during the period. NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate arrested Harpreet Singh Talwar, a known figure in Delhi‘s party circuit who once held the nightclub franchise of Playboy Club, Wednesday for smuggling drugs in collusion with Pakistanis and Afghan nationals allegedly aligned with ISI.Talwar, who ran the nightclub from Samrat Hotel and was linked, along with others, with the seizure of drugs worth Rs 21,000 crore by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) from Mundra port in 2021, has been accused of deploying narco money in his hospitality business.Talwar was arrested after ED carried out searches on five of his premises in the national capital. He was earlier arrested by the NIA for allegedly being one of the key members of an international drug syndicate, which had origins in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and used his shell entities “in the import of narcotics and further facilitated its transport to Delhi-based Afghan nationals involved in purification and distribution of heroin in many states, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, UP, etc”. Talwar was recently released on bail by Gujarat HC.On Aug 13, 2021, DRI had detained two containers at Mundra port and found they had come from Kandahar in Afghanistan via Bandar Abbas port in Iran. “The containers were declared to contain semi-processed talc stones. Examination led to the seizure of 2,988 kg of heroin from the two containers,” a statement said. Follow-up searches led to the recovery of 16 kg of heroin from a godown in Delhi, 10 kg powder suspected to be cocaine and 11 kg of suspected heroin from a house in Noida.Get the latest India news and live updates. NEW DELHI: A day after it searched nine premises of Rajesh Exports Ltd, ED said Wednesday it has found suspicious foreign transactions of Rs 3,000 crore through UAE, could not find any evidence of a Rs 1,035 crore investment it claimed to have made in African mines, and found that the MD of the company, which reported a consolidated revenue of Rs 7.7 lakh crore, was paid Rs 17,000 as monthly salary, while its CFO had not been paid anything since 2020.ED claimed to have found evidence of suspicious block trade, including over Rs 600 crore siphoned out of India through share manipulation using NRI ‘benamidars’.Investigation revealed opaque netting and set-offs of large foreign trade receivables against foreign trade payables of around Rs 3,000 crore”, ED said. On the “investment” in African mines, it said, “Rajesh Exports Ltd failed to produce documentation in respect of its foreign transactions, including its imports, exports, overseas investments, and settlement of foreign trade receivables and payables, thereby rendering verification of the genuineness of such transactions almost impossible.” The agency carried out physical verification of stock during searches and found “a difference of 40% between the stock recorded in factory registers and the actual physical stock found on the premises”.
