While the mother and daughter duo spoke with PEOPLE, years after the incident that almost took young Maddie’s life, they touched upon the sensitive topic. She detailed what happened to her daughter when she was only 8 years old and fell into a pond along with her ATV.She further shared that while her daughter was in a coma, they called for a priest to perform the last rites, which are done for someone near death in the Catholic faith. She further detailed, “He comes in, and she physically sits up in all her restraints and tubes, I’m screaming for the doctors, like ‘Come in here now!’ I’ve never seen anything like what’s happening.”Calling everything that happened a “miracle,” she shared that “I knew she was in there and felt all of us praying. We were given a miracle, and I don’t take it for granted.” Further on, the incident also resulted in the family welcoming another family member.Maddie had earlier asked for a younger sibling, and when she woke up from the coma, the first thing she asked her mother about was the sibling. Spears commented, “We always say she just went up to heaven to go pick out her little sister.” Ivey, Spears’ younger daughter who is now 8, was born in 2018.

The actress revealed that Maddie, who was only 8 years old at the time, had been driving the ATV vehicle around their home area in LA. Taking a sharp turn proved fatal for Maddie, who ended up going into the nearby pond. Spears further detailed that everyone rushed for her, but since she was stuck under the ATV, they could not get her out. The authorities were finally able to get Maddie out of the water; however, the danger was far from over.She added, “We thought that she had passed.” Eventually, a firefighter found a pulse, and she was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Maddie was in a coma for around two days after that. Years after the incident, Maddie has now fully recovered and often accompanies her mother to various entertainment events.
