US President Donald Trump offered strong praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, saying India would continue to play a major role on the global stage as long as PM Modi remained in office.Speaking in Évian-les-Bains when asked whether he expected India to play a role in developments in West Asia, Trump replied: “Yes, I do. I think India plays a big role in everything. Hiring activity in tier-2 locations has grown steadily over the past few years, while businesses, startups and Global Capability Centres have expanded beyond traditional metropolitan hubs. As Misbah M, who relocated to Goa, said: “I was sick of the corporate facade. No real substance. Exorbitant housing rents, subpar lifestyle.”That sentiment is reflected in the experiences of many who have made similar moves.After spending 32 years in Mumbai, entrepreneur and communications professional Gayatri Sethi Jain relocated to Vadodara during the pandemic. “The biggest change has been moving from a life of constant hustle to one of intentional growth,” she said. “I was conditioned to believe that opportunity was tied to a pin code. When we moved to Vadodara during the pandemic to support my in-laws, it was initially a family decision rather than a lifestyle choice. Professionals also frequently cite better air quality, shorter travel times, improved mental health and stronger family support systems as major advantages.For Yash Sonkar, who moved from Delhi to Tanda (Uttar Pradesh), the decision involved balancing career ambitions with broader life goals. “The better opportunity of course has to be the starter, but then there are a lot of other factors to be weighed in, from investments and savings point of view to the health, and mental fatigue and stress,” he said.Yash added that moving away from Delhi’s pollution and relentless pace improved both his quality of life and financial situation. For instance, Jaipur resident Amrita Gupta, Director of Manglam Group, says the post-pandemic years have led to “stronger talent retention in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities”, with many professionals choosing to stay in or return to places they once left behind for work. “The conversation today is no longer about whether smaller cities can compete with metros,” she said, adding, “It is about recognising that growth is becoming more distributed.”The widespread adoption of remote and hybrid work models, coupled with the rise of entrepreneurship, has created new opportunities beyond traditional employment hubs.Amrita Gupta, Director of Manglam Group, JaipurMeanwhile, companies are expanding into smaller cities in search of talent, lower operating costs and new markets.Industry reports show increasing hiring activity across tier-2 cities, while sectors ranging from manufacturing and financial services to technology and education are creating opportunities beyond traditional metro centres.According to a 2026 report by ANSR, a firm that helps companies set up and scale Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India, emerging cities already host more than 220 GCC units and are growing at nearly 11 per cent annually. The report identified cities such as Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow and Visakhapatnam as increasingly attractive destinations for companies, citing improving infrastructure, talent availability and quality of life. It also noted that GCC job openings in emerging cities have grown by 42 per cent, compared with 19 per cent in metro hubs.The changing employment landscape is also encouraging professionals to look beyond traditional metro hubs. Aruna Yadav, founder of SD Campus in Noida, which is not a traditional metro city but has become closely linked in recent years, said improved infrastructure and connectivity are helping businesses expand into newer markets, creating opportunities in cities that previously saw talent migrate elsewhere. “The long-standing perception that high-quality jobs and leadership roles are only available in metropolitan areas will no longer exist,” she said.A broader shift in India’s employment landscape is manifesting as professional migration from metropolitan areas to smaller cities.Aruna Yadav, founder of SD Campus in NoidaEmployers in actual smaller cities are noticing the shift as well.CA Ankit Jain, managing partner at Jain Ankit and Co, based in Dehradun and with a supporting branch in Gurugram, said his firm regularly receives applications from professionals who have previously worked in metro cities. “Many are keen to move to a Tier-II city to escape the constant hustle, noise and crowds in search of a calmer life, often willing to compromise on CTC to do so.”Jain further argued that the belief that serious professional opportunities exist only in metros is increasingly outdated. Many industries operate factories, business units and regional centres outside major cities and require skilled professionals locally.In our line of work, a large share of companies operate their units and factories in Tier-II and Tier-III cities. They rely on professionals based locally to deliver services they simply can’t afford to outsource to metro cities because of the higher costs.CA Ankit Jain, managing partner at Jain Ankit and Co, based in DehradunRaman Aggarwal, founder and CEO of Jupitice Justice Technologies in Chandigarh, also believes the shift reflects a broader change in how professionals view success.Success should not be dependent on a change of pin code.Raman Aggarwal, founder and CEO of Jupitice Justice Technologies in ChandigarhHe added that many talented professionals now want careers that allow them to remain close to their families rather than being forced to relocate simply to access opportunities.The trade-offs still existWhile some have found the silver lining in moving away from a metro, it is not a universal solution.The advantages are clear, but so are the compromises.Smaller cities, currently, often cannot match the sheer scale of opportunities available in Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru in many fields. Professional networks may be smaller, specialised roles may be fewer and lifestyle choices can be more limited.Those who make the move often discover that they miss aspects of metro life they once took for granted.Chirag Singh, who moved from Gurugram to Simhadri near Visakhapatnam earlier this year, says one of the biggest adjustments has been the lack of convenient facilities.”You also realise how much you take certain conveniences for granted. No Blinkit, and Swiggy/Zomato options are far more limited,” he said, adding that, despite the challenges, he’s adapting to the change.The air is cleaner, there’s less chaos, and overall it feels like a healthier environment to live in. Access to niche services, late-night dining, entertainment options and professional networking events remains significantly higher in metros.Even those who are happy with their decision acknowledge the trade-offs.Some pointed to cultural adjustments. Moving from a highly cosmopolitan city to a smaller town can require adapting to different social norms, work cultures and ways of thinking.The challenge, therefore, is not simply relocating. It is learning to thrive in a different environment.AdaptationMoving away from a metro city often requires more than a change of address. For many professionals, the transition involves adjusting expectations, developing new skills and finding ways to grow within a different environment.For instance, When freelance food writer Madhulika Dash left Mumbai for Bhubaneswar nearly 15 years ago, the move was widely viewed by her friends and colleagues as a professional risk. “Food writing was what I wanted to do but opportunities weren’t there in the city,” she said.Returning to her hometown meant lower living costs and being closer to family, but it also meant stepping away from a professional ecosystem she had spent years building.Initially, she expected the move to be temporary. Instead, she adapted. As opportunities in food writing remained limited, she diversified into new areas, becoming a columnist, exploring anthropology writing, working on culinary projects and eventually collaborating with the Odisha govt in their tourism committee. Over time, she adapted and now she believes, “anyone can shift to a small city as the cost of living comes down. Cities once seen as secondary destinations are witnessing major investments in urban infrastructure. In April, for instance, the Union Cabinet approved Jaipur Metro Phase 2, a Rs 13,038-crore project that will add a 41-km corridor connecting key residential, commercial and industrial hubs. Meanwhile, airports, organised retail, modern healthcare facilities and digital infrastructure are there in cities such as Indore, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore and Kochi, making them attractive places to live and work.Thus, for a growing number of professionals, the question is no longer simply if they can build a successful career outside a metro city.It is whether they still have the glamour in a metro city. When we moved to Vadodara during the pandemic to support my in-laws, it was initially a family decision rather than a lifestyle choice. Professionals also frequently cite better air quality, shorter travel times, improved mental health and stronger family support systems as major advantages.For Yash Sonkar, who moved from Delhi to Tanda (Uttar Pradesh), the decision involved balancing career ambitions with broader life goals. “The better opportunity of course has to be the starter, but then there are a lot of other factors to be weighed in, from investments and savings point of view to the health, and mental fatigue and stress,” he said.Yash added that moving away from Delhi’s pollution and relentless pace improved both his quality of life and financial situation. For instance, Jaipur resident Amrita Gupta, Director of Manglam Group, says the post-pandemic years have led to “stronger talent retention in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities”, with many professionals choosing to stay in or return to places they once left behind for work. “The conversation today is no longer about whether smaller cities can compete with metros,” she said, adding, “It is about recognising that growth is becoming more distributed.”The widespread adoption of remote and hybrid work models, coupled with the rise of entrepreneurship, has created new opportunities beyond traditional employment hubs.Amrita Gupta, Director of Manglam Group, JaipurMeanwhile, companies are expanding into smaller cities in search of talent, lower operating costs and new markets.Industry reports show increasing hiring activity across tier-2 cities, while sectors ranging from manufacturing and financial services to technology and education are creating opportunities beyond traditional metro centres.According to a 2026 report by ANSR, a firm that helps companies set up and scale Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India, emerging cities already host more than 220 GCC units and are growing at nearly 11 per cent annually. The report identified cities such as Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow and Visakhapatnam as increasingly attractive destinations for companies, citing improving infrastructure, talent availability and quality of life. It also noted that GCC job openings in emerging cities have grown by 42 per cent, compared with 19 per cent in metro hubs.The changing employment landscape is also encouraging professionals to look beyond traditional metro hubs. Aruna Yadav, founder of SD Campus in Noida, which is not a traditional metro city but has become closely linked in recent years, said improved infrastructure and connectivity are helping businesses expand into newer markets, creating opportunities in cities that previously saw talent migrate elsewhere. “The long-standing perception that high-quality jobs and leadership roles are only available in metropolitan areas will no longer exist,” she said.A broader shift in India’s employment landscape is manifesting as professional migration from metropolitan areas to smaller cities.Aruna Yadav, founder of SD Campus in NoidaEmployers in actual smaller cities are noticing the shift as well.CA Ankit Jain, managing partner at Jain Ankit and Co, based in Dehradun and with a supporting branch in Gurugram, said his firm regularly receives applications from professionals who have previously worked in metro cities. “Many are keen to move to a Tier-II city to escape the constant hustle, noise and crowds in search of a calmer life, often willing to compromise on CTC to do so.”Jain further argued that the belief that serious professional opportunities exist only in metros is increasingly outdated. Many industries operate factories, business units and regional centres outside major cities and require skilled professionals locally.In our line of work, a large share of companies operate their units and factories in Tier-II and Tier-III cities. Professional networks may be smaller, specialised roles may be fewer and lifestyle choices can be more limited.Those who make the move often discover that they miss aspects of metro life they once took for granted.Chirag Singh, who moved from Gurugram to Simhadri near Visakhapatnam earlier this year, says one of the biggest adjustments has been the lack of convenient facilities.”You also realise how much you take certain conveniences for granted. No Blinkit, and Swiggy/Zomato options are far more limited,” he said, adding that, despite the challenges, he’s adapting to the change.The air is cleaner, there’s less chaos, and overall it feels like a healthier environment to live in. Access to niche services, late-night dining, entertainment options and professional networking events remains significantly higher in metros.Even those who are happy with their decision acknowledge the trade-offs.Some pointed to cultural adjustments. Moving from a highly cosmopolitan city to a smaller town can require adapting to different social norms, work cultures and ways of thinking.The challenge, therefore, is not simply relocating. It is learning to thrive in a different environment.AdaptationMoving away from a metro city often requires more than a change of address. For many professionals, the transition involves adjusting expectations, developing new skills and finding ways to grow within a different environment.For instance, When freelance food writer Madhulika Dash left Mumbai for Bhubaneswar nearly 15 years ago, the move was widely viewed by her friends and colleagues as a professional risk. “Food writing was what I wanted to do but opportunities weren’t there in the city,” she said.Returning to her hometown meant lower living costs and being closer to family, but it also meant stepping away from a professional ecosystem she had spent years building.Initially, she expected the move to be temporary. Instead, she adapted. As opportunities in food writing remained limited, she diversified into new areas, becoming a columnist, exploring anthropology writing, working on culinary projects and eventually collaborating with the Odisha govt in their tourism committee. Over time, she adapted and now she believes, “anyone can shift to a small city as the cost of living comes down. They continue to offer unmatched concentrations of talent, capital, infrastructure and opportunity.The glamour is still there for manyBut smaller cities are no longer merely alternatives for those who cannot make it in the metros.As infrastructure improves, businesses expand and remote work remains part of the employment landscape, the gap between metro and non-metro India is narrowing. Cities once seen as secondary destinations are witnessing major investments in urban infrastructure. In April, for instance, the Union Cabinet approved Jaipur Metro Phase 2, a Rs 13,038-crore project that will add a 41-km corridor connecting key residential, commercial and industrial hubs. Meanwhile, airports, organised retail, modern healthcare facilities and digital infrastructure are there in cities such as Indore, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore and Kochi, making them attractive places to live and work.Thus, for a growing number of professionals, the question is no longer simply if they can build a successful career outside a metro city.It is whether they still have the glamour in a metro city. File photo: PM Modi with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim India’s growing soft-power presence and cultural diplomacy is witnessing a new vigour in Malaysia, one of India’s key economic partners and a historically connected Asean nation in the region.The centuries-old civilizational bond between the two countries, anchored by 2.9 million strong Indian origin diaspora, has been witnessing a spate of events, moments and revelations that further buttress this.The tracing of the Malay Archipelago thread to the Chola Empire’s Anaimangalam Copper Plates that Prime Minister Modi brought home from the Netherlands carries huge symbolism for the cultural and maritime exchange of the 11th century.And in the recent past, Malaysian archaeologist Dr Nasha Rodziadi Khaw’s astounding work unearthing the Hindu-Buddhist artefacts in Bhujang Valley, in the Kedah state, has drawn people back to the ancient ties and Cholas’ mighty presence in this region.The celebrations to mark the 15th anniversary of the Indian Cultural Centre in Kuala Lumpur, together with 77th ICCR Day, on April 9 this year, were an exhibition of these ties and much more.In fact, the deep-rooted Indian cultural influences and traditions have, over the years, transformed into a unique, localised version woven into Malaysian identity.The outgoing Indian high commissioner B N Reddy, who, in his stint, successfully showcased India as a culturally resonant partner in South East Asia, summed up this unique phenomenon in his keynote speech at the ICC event.He said, “The depth and range of the diversity existing in the cultural landscape of Malaysia has led to a remarkable self-sustaining, thriving system, empowered by local artists and Gurus.”The most significant and recent example was the record-breaking Swagatam performance by an 800-strong contingent of Indian and Malaysian dancers for Modi’s welcome event in February this year. The spectacle, led and organised by the Indian High Commission and ICC, earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records for the largest traditional and folk dance staged in the country.It was unique because nearly 50 local dance schools run by Malaysian Indian teachers and gurus collaborated for this performance.Speakers at the ICC’s 15th anniversary celebration harped on the transmission of heritage, the continuity of culture and the emerging syncretic forms that have brought the people of the two nations together.One of the guest speakers, Padmashree awardee and internationally acclaimed Malaysian artist, Ramli Ibrahim, said, “We are witnessing currents of change; there’s cultural diffusion amongst people, in their day-to-day interactions; acceptance, and curiosity also. What we need now is that powerful cultural connect with India must enable us to project Malaysia at the forefront of multi-racial diversity.”As a Malay Muslim practising and promoting Odissi and Bharatnatyam, Ramli has had a run-in with the conservative elements in the past. But the work of Sutra Foundation, his dance school that attracts even Chinese youth, has not gone unnoticed.“Radhe Radhe! 2.0, Ramli’s Odissi production, based on Radha and Krishna, after successfully touring India, is now staging shows in various cities of Malaysia, with the support of government agencies like JKKN Melaka (National Department of Culture and Arts) led by director Ezlina Alias.Reflecting on his recent cultural tour of India, as ICCR’s Distinguished Visitor, Tunku Zain Al Abidin, member of the Royal family of Negri Sembilan, educationist and cultural thought-leader, said, “When Malaysian and Indian art blend together, they show how tangible and deep our connections are.The puppet shows in Malaysia, Indonesia draw heavily from the Indian sub-continent and today they are symbols of our shared heritage. At another level, during my meetings with think-tanks in India, I realized how similar we are in terms of institutions.”Talking to TOI, Shangita Namasivayam, renowned Bharatnatyam dancer and owner and patron of Kalpana Dance Theatre, KL, whose student portrayed Goddess Lalitha Tripurasundari in the programme, said, “The ICC has become the institutional bridge to our heritage and over the years it has led to a cultural richness that is so varied and so powerful. And also Malaysia is uniquely strengthened because the local communities have maintained this continuity in the traditions of arts.”In Malaysia, ICC was inaugurated by Dr Karan Singh was in the year 2010.Located in the bustling streets of Little India in Kuala Lumpur, the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre (thus named by Modi in his previous visit to Malaysia in 2016) has become a focal point of social exchange and a learning centre for Malaysians with an interest in India.Besides Yoga Hindi language classes, local Indian children also learn Kathak and Bharatnatyam dances. Aaditya Thackeray (File photo) NEW DELHI: Staring at another political crisis at the party level, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, who is also party chief Uddhav Thackeray’s son, called what’s unfolding in Maharashtra a “shocking example of dirty politics”.In his first reaction to the crossover of six of the nine Lok Sabha MPs, who constitute two-thirds of the party’s strength in the Lower House, Thackeray junior said: “Maharashtra won’t tolerate this”.Calling those who are expected to switch to the Eknath Shinde camp “shameless, ungrateful, and corrupt individuals”, the ex-Maharashtra minister said the MPs “shamelessly” sold themselves, staking their “reputation and family names”.Thackeray accused the MPs of betraying those who helped them win in the 2024 parliamentary elections.The split in Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Lok Sabha contingent appeared virtually complete on Thursday after six of the party’s nine MPs skipped a parliamentary party meeting convened in Delhi by Uddhav Thackeray’s outfit despite a whip being issued.The meeting was attended only by Arvind Sawant, Anil Desai and Rajabhau Waze, all of whom have publicly reaffirmed their support for Uddhav Thackeray. The six rebel MPs require the backing of two-thirds of the party’s Lok Sabha strength to avoid disqualification under the anti-defection law.A day earlier, the dissident MPs had written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla informing him of their decision to form a separate group. In their communication, they cited concerns over the possibility of Shiv Sena (UBT) merging with the Congress and alleged deviation from the party’s original ideology as key reasons for the move.The rebel legislators also requested seating arrangements near the seven MPs belonging to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena in Parliament.Reacting to their absence from Thursday’s meeting, Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut said disciplinary action would be initiated because a party whip had been issued. Lok Sabha MP Arvind Sawant said notices had already been sent to the absent members.Meanwhile, five of the six rebel MPs were moved to Jaipur on Thursday, while Omraje Nimbalkar remained in Pune. Sources said the move was aimed at ensuring they did not attend the UBT meeting. The group had been in New Delhi on Wednesday before leaving for Rajasthan the following morning.The six MPs are expected to formally join the Shinde-led Shiv Sena next week after meeting the Lok Sabha Speaker and securing recognition for their separate group. According to Sena sources, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Jadhav has emerged as the leader of the breakaway faction.Sawant said, “The absent MPs have betrayed the party. We are going to issue showcause notices to them by the evening. If they do not respond within seven days, legal action will be taken. We will write to the Speaker as well as the MPs. Our party’s directive (whip) was issued, and everyone received it. Despite that, they were not present here today.”Raut continued his criticism of the rebel MPs and claimed that NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar had contacted him, suggesting protests be organised in the constituencies represented by the dissidents. According to Raut, Pawar was himself willing to participate in such protest meetings.Referring to the campaign against the rebels as ‘Operation Tudwa’, Raut alleged that the dissident MPs had received “an additional Rs 10 crore” before being shifted to a secure location in Rajasthan.
