A 39-year-old woman from West Bengal’s Birbhum district has been rescued from an apartment in Gurugram, where she was allegedly confined and forced to work as a domestic help for more than two years under abusive conditions.The rescue was carried out on Friday through a coordinated effort involving West Bengal Police, district authorities, civil society groups and local officials in Haryana, PTI reported.Allegedly forced to work 16 hours a dayAccording to police, Bhadu Mandi had been taken to Gurugram after an advance payment of ₹40,000 was made to secure her employment as a domestic worker.Once there, she was allegedly made to work for over 16 hours daily, subjected to physical abuse and prevented from leaving the apartment.Authorities said the residence had a highly digitised security system, leaving her with little opportunity to contact her family.How the case came to lightThe case surfaced in March when Bhadu’s sister, Lakshmi Tudu, approached authorities in Birbhum seeking help.Family members said Bhadu managed to contact them only when a technician visited the apartment for repair work.An NGO, Nari O Sishu Kalyan Kendra, subsequently coordinated with government agencies to pursue the case. An FIR was later registered at Illambazar Police Station under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).A West Bengal Police team later travelled to Gurugram and rescued the woman.Apartment owners abscondingPolice said the owners of the apartment were found absconding during the rescue operation. NEW DELHI: Fresh differences emerged in the Punjab Congress on Sunday after MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa challenged state unit chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring’s ‘one family, one ticket’ stance ahead of upcoming assembly elections.Speaking at an event attended by former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Randhawa said families could get up to four tickets if their members were capable of winning.”Some say I will not give two tickets (to a family). But those (in a family) who have the capability to win will not only get two but four tickets and ensure Congress’ victory,” Randhawa said.Randhawa also stressed that the Congress could not return to power by ignoring its workers.”We have nurtured the Congress with our blood and sweat. If the Congress is standing strong in the state today, it is because of the contribution of every worker, not any one individual,” he said.His remarks are being seen as a counter to Warring, who has advocated the ‘one family, one ticket’ policy.Warring had said that only one member of a family would get a ticket to contest the elections.”Big leaders say I will contest from here and my son will contest from there. If Raja Warring stays, one family will get only one ticket, not two. Rahul Gandhi will give tickets, and I will only recommend,” Warring had said.On Saturday, Warring also shared an old video of Rahul Gandhi on Facebook in which the former Congress president said, “One person per family should get a ticket.””I will always follow my leader and stand by him,” Warring said.Meanwhile, BJP leader and former Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu took a dig at the Congress over the issue, saying the party’s high command itself does not follow the one-family-one-ticket policy.Bittu claimed that the Gandhi family had not followed the Congress’ 2022 Udaipur declaration of ‘one family, one ticket’.”Is this a new thing? NEW DELHI: The Jharkhand government has invited students protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations for a fresh round of talks on Monday, August 17, in an attempt to resolve the 23-day-old standoff over demands for a CBI probe and cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination.The talks are scheduled for 2 pm at the State Guest House, with the government also allowing the students to participate alongside their legal advisor, an official said on Sunday.The decision followed a meeting between the Sub-Divisional Officer and the ADM, Law and Order, and protesting students at the Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, where the agitation is being held.“The protesters have been invited for talks on August 17 at 2 pm. The students have been offered the proposal to participate in the discussions along with their legal advisor,” the official said.The ‘JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch’, which is spearheading the agitation, said it had accepted the government’s invitation and would attend the meeting, but stressed that its core demands remained unchanged.“We will definitely go for the talks as we want to resolve the issue through dialogue. NEW DELHI: Police have arrested three persons in connection with the murder of a local Congress leader and his lawyer son in West Bengal’s Nadia district. The investigators have named a jailed man as the alleged mastermind behind the killings, officials said on Sunday.The arrests were made after Anisur Rahman, 50, and his son Abu Sufian, 24, were shot at and attacked with sharp-edged weapons while returning home. The duo was in their car near Nagadi railway gate in Nakashipara when the assault happened around 9.30pm on Saturday. The spot was about 200 metres from their residence.The three accused, identified as Haranagar gram panchayat pradhan Fatima Biwi, Sageb Sk and Mithu Sheikh, were produced before Krishnanagar court and remanded to nine days in police custody.Fatima Biwi’s husband, Jabbar Sheikh, who is currently in jail, has been named as the alleged mastermind. Police, however, said the investigation was still underway and that the exact number of attackers and rounds fired had not yet been established.How the killings took placeAccording to police, Rahman and his son were travelling home when their vehicle was intercepted near the railway gate. His wife, who is a Trinamool panchayat pradhan, has also been arrested. Trinamool operatives committed the murder. The rule of law applies to everyone,” Adhikari said.Congress leader Tipu Sultan also alleged that Jabbar Sheikh had orchestrated the killings from jail.”Jabbar orchestrated this from jail using miscreants to gain control of the area.
