The government on Wednesday summoned US diplomat after a vessel with several Indian onboard was attacked. Additional secretary (Americas) in the ministry of external affairs Nagaraj Naidu summoned Jason Meeks, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States to protest the attack on the ship. The move comes as India condemned the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, which had 24 Indian crew members onboard. While 21 Indians have been rescued, 3 remain missing. The government on Wednesday summoned US diplomat after a vessel with several Indian onboard was attacked. NEW DELHI: A day after Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha was rejected, the Congress is set to file a petition on the Election Commission’s portal on Wednesday.In the event of no response from the poll panel, the party is preparing to move the Supreme Court challenging the decision, news agency ANI reported, citing sources.”The Congress is preparing to file a petition on the portal by 10:30 PM tonight, in the event that no response is received from the Central Election Commission,” sources told ANI.”Preparations are underway to mention the matter before the Supreme Court tomorrow morning,” they added.Earlier in the day, a delegation of senior Congress leaders, including KC Venugopal, Randeep Surjewala, Jairam Ramesh, Deepa Dasmunshi, Vivek Tankha and Abhishek Singhvi, met Election Commission officials in New Delhi and argued that Natarajan’s nomination had been wrongly rejected.They urged the poll panel to immediately reverse the rejection of its Rajya Sabha candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination from Madhya Pradesh, calling the decision ‘egregious’ and ‘blatantly unlawful’.”The order rejecting Natarajan’s nomination is egregious, blatantly unlawful and must be set aside immediately,” the Congress told the poll body.Earlier on Tuesday, Natarajan’s nomination was rejected by the Returning Officer in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly on allegations that she failed to disclose details of a case in Telangana in her election affidavit.BJP leaders objected, alleging that information relating to a pending matter had been concealed.Following the meeting with the Election Commission, Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan said the party had faith in constitutional institutions and would continue to pursue the matter through legal and democratic channels.”The Election Commission has heard us. We are fighting this battle because we still have faith in constitutional institutions,” Natarajan told reporters.The rejection of Natarajan’s nomination has turned the tables for the Congress in Madhya Pradesh.The BJP, which holds 164 seats in the 230-member Assembly, was already assured of winning two of the three Rajya Sabha seats. The Congress, with 64 MLAs, had sufficient numbers to elect Natarajan to the third seat.With her nomination rejected, the BJP’s third candidate, Mahesh Kewat, is now in a much stronger position, raising the possibility that the party could win all three Rajya Sabha seats unless the Congress secures relief from the Election Commission or the courts.Congress leaders have accused the BJP of engineering a ‘constitutional conspiracy’ to capture the third seat despite lacking the numbers for a straightforward victory, while the BJP insists that election officials merely followed legal requirements regarding the disclosure of pending cases.Get the latest India news and live updates. Image: IANS The ministry of external affairs on Wednesday condemned the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman and said efforts were underway to trace three missing Indian crew members. The ministry said 21 of the 24 Indian nationals on board had been rescued, while the Indian Embassy in Muscat was coordinating with Omani authorities as search and rescue operations continued.”We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, earlier today. Of the 24 Indian crew onboard, 21 Indians have been rescued thus far and 03 Indians are reportedly missing. Our Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with the Omani authorities in the ongoing Search and Rescue operation,” the MEA said through a statement. The vessel involved was the Palau-flagged chemical and oil products tanker Settebello, which reported an engine room fire about 20 nautical miles northeast of Oman’s port of Sohar, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency.British maritime risk management firm Vanguard identified the vessel as the Settebello and said the Omani Navy responded to its distress call, as cited by Reuters. Data from ship-tracking platform MarineTraffic showed the tanker was partially laden and was last recorded off the Omani coast on June 1.Last week, the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) sought assistance for 24 Indian crew members aboard a vessel named “Marivex” reportedly attacked off the coast of Oman. In a post on X, the union said the vessel was near the Strait of Hormuz and appealed to Indian authorities and the Indian Navy for support after receiving distress communications from the ship. According to authorities, all 24 Indian crew members were later rescued by the Omani military.The United States began enforcing a blockade on maritime traffic linked to Iranian ports on April 13 following disruptions to shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas supplies. BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh visited Gurdwara Sri Bangla Sahib in New Delhi on Wednesday and offered prayers for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the completion of 12 years of his tenure and his emergence as India’s longest continuously serving elected prime minister.Chugh offered prayers for the Prime Minister’s health and continued leadership, while BJP leaders and workers across the country also visited gurdwaras and temples on the occasion. Jawaharlal Nehru.”According to Chugh, the past 12 years had seen progress across sectors including infrastructure, welfare and economic growth.”The entire world has witnessed the shine and strength of India — be it values, raising India’s name across the globe, transformation in the lives of the poor, building world-class infrastructure, or honouring our heritage,” he said.The BJP leader also highlighted that the government has significantly worked for the betterment of the Sikh community.”PM Modi has always listened to the voice of the Punjabi and Sikh community,” said Chugh.Referring to the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor, he pointed, “The opening of the Kartarpur Corridor, for which the sangat performed ardaas for decades, was fulfilled by PM Modi — a historic day not just for Sikhs but for the Nanak Naam Leva sangat across the world.”Chugh further announced that the Centre had “waived GST on langar at Sri Harmandir Sahib, granted the FCRA licence to Sri Harmandir Sahib, built circular roads connecting the gurdwaras of Punjab, and completed a golden beautification project around Sri Harmandir Sahib.”During the interaction, Chugh also referred to development projects undertaken in Punjab under the Modi government. He noted that Punjab had received “two PGIs, an AIIMS, a cancer institute, two medical colleges, IIT, IIM, thousands of crores of rupees for road infrastructure and about Rs 3,000 crore for the development of railway stations.”He also cited initiatives linked to Sikh heritage, including the War Memorial, the memorial of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and the observance of Veer Bal Diwas.”Guru Maharaj may bless PM Modi with long life and strength, that he may continue to lead the nation for decades to come, that under his leadership India becomes a Viksit Bharat by 2047, and that peace, prosperity and happiness prevail across the country,” he said, adding that the “siropa, chola and floral blessings received from the Guru Ghar in the name of PM Modi” would be delivered to the Prime Minister.While referring to the religious service attended during the visit, Chugh said the kirtan carried the message, “maanas ki jaat sabhe ekai pehchanbo”, which he described as a reminder of equality and community service.Get the latest India news and live updates.
