NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Tuesday opened the online portal for Class 12 students to apply for verification of issues found in scanned copies of their evaluated answer books and for re-evaluation of answers. The facility, available only to students who have already obtained scanned copies of their answer books, will remain open until midnight on June 6.Aadhaar verification has been introduced as a mandatory security measure in the latest registration process, CBSE announced.In cases where children do not possess an Aadhaar number, the notice said, the Aadhaar details of a parent, relative, or legal guardian may be used instead. However, it is mandatory that the name, date of birth, and gender entered in the system must correspond exactly to the individual whose Aadhaar number is being provided.How to apply for re-evaluation?Announcing the launch of the portal, CBSE said students can log in through their accounts on the board’s website and choose either or both services based on their requirements. The board has clarified that candidates will be required to enter an Aadhaar number while accessing the portal. In cases where a student’s own Aadhaar is unavailable, the Aadhaar name, date of birth and gender entered in the application must correspond to the person whose Aadhaar number is being used.The board said students can seek rectification of issues identified in scanned copies of answer books or request re-evaluation of specific answers if they are not satisfied with the assessment. CBSE will examine the requests and communicate the outcome after the process is completed.No offline applications will be accepted, and requests submitted after the prescribed deadline will not be considered, the board said.The fee for verification of issues in scanned answer books has been fixed at Rs 100 per answer book, while re-evaluation will cost Rs 25 per question. Naveen Jindal NEW DELHI: A Delhi court Monday took cognisance of charges filed against industrialist Naveen Jindal, former coal secretary P C Parekh and others under IPC provisions relating to criminal conspiracy and cheating, and the Prevention of Corruption Act, in what it described as “one of the most voluminous chargesheets of coal block cases”.Special judge Sunena Sharma issued summons to Naveen Jindal, JSPL, Parekh, Rakesh Kumar Jindal, Ram Kishore, S K Agarwal and Jindal Strips Ltd (now Nalwa Sons Investments Ltd), directing them to appear before the court on July 17.According to CBI, Jindal Strips Ltd was allotted the Gare Palma IV/1 coal block in Chhattisgarh in 1996 for a sponge iron plant with a capacity of 0.6 MT per annum, despite the block containing substantially higher coal reserves. The approved mining lease area was fixed at 705 hectares, but the lease was allegedly executed beyond the area approved by Centre. Naveen Jindal NEW DELHI: A Delhi court Monday took cognisance of charges filed against industrialist Naveen Jindal, former coal secretary P C Parekh and others under IPC provisions relating to criminal conspiracy and cheating, and the Prevention of Corruption Act, in what it described as “one of the most voluminous chargesheets of coal block cases”.Special judge Sunena Sharma issued summons to Naveen Jindal, JSPL, Parekh, Rakesh Kumar Jindal, Ram Kishore, S K Agarwal and Jindal Strips Ltd (now Nalwa Sons Investments Ltd), directing them to appear before the court on July 17.According to CBI, Jindal Strips Ltd was allotted the Gare Palma IV/1 coal block in Chhattisgarh in 1996 for a sponge iron plant with a capacity of 0.6 MT per annum, despite the block containing substantially higher coal reserves. The approved mining lease area was fixed at 705 hectares, but the lease was allegedly executed beyond the area approved by Centre. NEW DELHI: CJI Surya Kant on Tuesday administered oath to five new Supreme Court judges — Justices Sheel Nagu, Sree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli and V S Mohana — taking the working strength of SC judges to a record 37 with one vacancy.The entire process — involving the recommendation of names by the five-member CJI-led collegium, vetting of names by govt and issuance of warrants of appointment by the President — was completed within a week. As an SC judge, he would have a three-and-a-half-year tenure. Justice Nagu was part of the in-house committee panel inquiring into the discovery of partially burnt notes from the residence of then Delhi HC judge Yashwant Varma in March last year.Bombay HC CJ Chandrashekhar, who had become a judge of his parent HC in Jharkhand in Jan 2013, will have a tenure of less than four years in SC. He was part of the Lok Sabha speaker-appointed committee inquiring into the alleged misconduct of Justice Varma.MP HC CJ Sachdeva, who had become a judge of Delhi HC in April 2013, will have a tenure of three and a half years. J&K and Ladakh HC CJ Palli, appointed a judge in his parent Punjab and Haryana HC in Dec 2013, will have a tenure of three years and four months as SC judge. Justice Mohana is a first-generation lawyer and became an advocate on record in 1996. Designated as a senior advocate in April 2015, she will have a tenure of five years in SC.SC started its journey on Jan 26, 1950, with eight judges, including CJI Harilal Jekisondas Kania. NEW DELHI: Supreme Court has held that criminal proceedings should not be allowed to go on against a loan defaulter if the bank and the debtor reached a compromise for settlement of the loan account. The SC said it would have a debilitating effect on the overall economy if such proceedings are allowed.A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan said permitting such criminal proceedings would be oppressive for the loan defaulter and would also amount to an abuse of the process of the court after both the parties settle their dispute which is commercial in nature. It allowed the plea of a businessman who sought quashing of criminal case on the ground that he and the bank already compromised before debts recovery tribunal and paid the settlement amount of Rs 4.25 crore against the outstanding due of Rs 6.49 crore which included a notional interest of Rs 3.09 crore.“Having regard to the fact that the dispute between the parties arising out of banking transactions which are commercial transactions having overwhelmingly or predominantly civil flavour had ended in a compromise settlement, that too, in the manner which we have delineated above, in our view, the possibility of his conviction of appellant No. 1 (businessman) is remote and bleak. Therefore, continuation of the criminal case would cause grave prejudice and injustice to the appellants,” the bench said.In this case the bank had lodged criminal complaint of cheating and fraud against the borrower two years after settling the loan with him. The case was probed by CBI which filed chargesheet and it was alleged that businessman had used forged copies of audit report to get enhancement of cash credit limit more than two times of the original amount. Quashing the case, the court said such conduct of the bank betrays lack of good faith.“There is one more reason why we say so. If the respondent-Bank is permitted to go ahead with the criminal prosecution initiated after settlement of the loan account before the DRT, it would adversely impact the sanctity of such settlement which has become part of the judicial proceeding and which had the approval of a judicial forum like the DRT.
