Image credit: PTI NEW DELHI: After an FIR was lodged against Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai over alleged objectionable remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress leader hit back at the BJP-led government, claiming the case was aimed at diverting attention from the alleged rape of a young Dalit girl in Mahoba.Speaking to PTI, Rai said the incident involved a young Dalit girl from Mahoba who was subjected to rape for 16 consecutive days. “Where was the police during those 16 days? Where was the government?” he asked.Rai alleged that authorities deployed the entire police force specifically to prevent him from visiting the victim’s home. “They had stationed security forces all across the Bundelkhand Highway. Yet, our party workers, including our colleague Brijraj Ahirwar, former MLA from the region Gayadin Anuragi, Pushpendra Singh, and all the local district presidents, came together and managed to lead me to her house,” he said.He claimed that the police tried to stop them, and that the administration and the government simply did not want him to go there.Rai further alleged that an AI-generated video of him was being circulated to divert attention from the matter. “Now, in an attempt to divert attention from these grave matters and to suppress the truth, an AI-generated video of me is being circulated. I wish to state this with absolute certainty,” he said.”Go ahead and file not just one, but a hundred lawsuits against me, register a hundred FIRs, but ensure that justice is delivered to that young Dalit girl from Mahoba,” Rai added.An FIR was registered against Rai, former Congress committee secretary Brijraj Ahirwar, and 30 unidentified supporters at Kotwali Nagar police station in Mahoba over alleged derogatory remarks against PM Modi and alleged violation of public order during a political gathering on May 22.The complaint, filed by a BJP district working committee member, alleged that Rai arrived with a convoy of 15-16 vehicles and around 25-30 supporters, parked in a disorderly manner causing traffic obstruction, and made “objectionable and abusive” remarks against the Prime Minister.A video of the alleged remarks has gone viral on social media, the complaint stated.Police have invoked sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita including unlawful assembly, promoting enmity between groups, and breach of peace. 'AI-generated video being circulated to suppress truth': UP Congress chief Ajay Rai on FIR over PM remarks

Agencies NEW DELHI: Bhopal Police on Saturday claimed that Samarth Singh, the main accused in the Twisha Sharma death case, “did not surrender” but was arrested from Jabalpur after he reached the court premises.Addressing a press conference, Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar said, “What happened was that he had come to the court in Jabalpur to surrender, but the court refused to let him surrender. We’ll interrogate him further and only then can we say anything,” Commissioner Kumar said.”When he is questioned in detail, if something comes to light that someone sheltered him, action will be taken against them as well…” he further added.The arrest comes days after Madhya Pradesh Police issued a Look Out Circular against Samarth Singh and announced a Rs 30,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.Sanjay Kumar further said that police had repeatedly tried to secure cooperation from the accused side during the investigation. “We have issued three notices, but they have not cooperated. Therefore, we have also moved for the cancellation of anticipatory bail,” he said.Kumar added that investigators are now focused on questioning the accused at the earliest as the probe intensifies. “Our effort is to interrogate them as soon as possible…” he said.Confirming the arrest, Additional DCP Anil Sharma said, “…From the very first day, the police have carried out the complete procedure regarding this case and made full efforts to arrest the accused. No matter who the accused is, they always try to evade the police, but they cannot stay away for long. Eventually, we arrested him yesterday…”However, Samarth Singh’s lawyer Advocate Gyanendra Sharma claimed that his client had surrendered and was only exercising his legal rights after failing to secure anticipatory bail.”We have surrendered. Now we are exhausting legal remedies… At least we should use our legal right… We didn’t receive anticipatory bail… So we will file the regular bail… Why would we take him to court? What work does he have there…” Sharma said.The lawyer also denied claims that Giribala Singh, Samarth’s mother and a retired judge, had ignored police notices seeking her appearance in the investigation.”Officially, there is no such thing. I can’t be a spokesperson for the Police. After we applied for anticipatory bail, a cancellation was filed against it. Since the cancellation cannot be approved without hearing the other party, the Court had sent us a notice to appear,” he said.On whether Giribala Singh would cooperate with the probe, Sharma said, “If they call us, we will definitely go. Ask the Police to show those notices. We are here, right. If they call us, we will go see them.” The case relates to the death of Twisha Sharma, a Noida resident who married Bhopal-based lawyer Samarth Singh in December 2025. The party has struggled to recover from backlash over the long-standing Special Category Status issue, with many voters viewing the BJP as having failed to fulfil promises made during Andhra Pradesh’s bifurcation.Karnataka: BJP’s southern exceptionKarnataka remains the BJP’s most successful and durable experiment in southern India and the only southern state where the party has managed to build an independent, long-term political base.The BJP’s rise in the state was built gradually through decades of RSS organisational work, particularly in coastal Karnataka and urban centres such as Bengaluru. The party also consolidated strong support among sections of the influential Lingayat community while expanding its appeal among urban middle-class voters.Unlike Tamil Nadu or Kerala, Karnataka proved more receptive to national political narratives and Hindutva mobilisation.Even when the BJP lost assembly elections in Karnataka, it has historically remained highly competitive in parliamentary contests. This pattern became visible again after the Congress secured a sweeping victory in the 2023 assembly elections, winning 135 seats with around 43 per cent vote share, while the BJP was reduced to 66 seats.Karnataka too continues to display strong regional assertion.Pro-Kannada groups have repeatedly protested against the growing use of Hindi in public spaces, including incidents where Hindi signboards in Bengaluru were blackened during demonstrations. That contradiction is politically significant. Karnataka shows that while the BJP can succeed in southern India, regional identity and linguistic sensitivity continue to remain powerful political forces even within the party’s strongest southern bastion.ConclusionThe BJP’s southern challenge is no longer simply electoral. It is a contest against deeply embedded political ecosystems shaped by language, welfare politics, cinema, federal identity and regional pride.In much of northern India, the BJP successfully built a broad national political imagination. In the South, however, voters continue to reward parties and leaders who are seen as protectors of state identity and regional autonomy.The question now is whether the BJP can evolve from being viewed as a powerful national force into a party that southern voters also see as culturally rooted within their states.
