Rahul Gandhi’s childhood photo with his father Rajiv Gandhi NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday paid tribute to his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by sharing a childhood photograph with him on his 35th death anniversary. Paying tribute to him, Rahul said he would continue working towards fulfilling his father’s vision of a strong and prosperous India.In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “Papa, I will fully shoulder the responsibility of realizing the dream of a skilled, prosperous, and strong India that you envisioned. Your teachings, your values, and your memories will always remain with me.”Senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also paid homage to Rajiv Gandhi at his memorial Vir Bhumi in Delhi. SC issues notice to states and UTs, objects to misleading labelling (Image credit: PTI) NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday acknowledged the problems caused by sale of alcohol in tetra packs, deceptively labelled as ‘green apple vodka’ or ‘Chelly Mango Vodka’, and agreed to examine an anti-drunken driving NGO’s plea for standardization of excise policy for packaging and bottling of liquor across states.Appearing for petitioner NGO ‘campaign against drunken driving’ (CADD), advocate Vipin Nair told a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi that such deceptive sale of liquor in tetra packs, portable bottles and sachets increase the risk of under-age drinking and drunken driving.The CJI-led bench said the problem is the ‘very deceptive’ packaging which may create a misconception that these packs contained fruit juice. Nair said that the excise departments across India must follow a uniform policy and standardize the packaging of liquor. The bench responses of all states and UTs to the PIL.“These packages pose various risks, including consumption by juveniles, drinking in a moving vehicle, health risks, increased ease of smuggling, ease of public consumption, and environmental risks. Moreover, the tetra packs have attractive packaging with vivid colours but do not have prominent health warnings like in the case of cigarettes, which would dissuade people from drunken driving and responsible drinking,” the NGO said.It said, “Such packaging, being deceptively similar to fruit juices, facilitates easy access and concealment, encourages underage consumption, promotes public drinking and drunk driving, and even enables smuggling across State borders.”“It is alarming to note that these tetra packs are marketed under labels such as ‘Bunty Premium Vodka’, ‘Chelli Mango Vodka’ and ‘Premium Romanov Vodka – Apple Thrill’ clearly intended to mislead consumers,” it said.“The use of fruit names alongside colour photographs of apples and mangoes on the packaging further reinforces this deception. NEW DELHI: Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor on Wednesday said that he had moved to an ashram on the outskirts of Patna till the next assembly polls in Bihar.While talking to reporters in Bihar’s Darbhanga, PK said, “Last night, I shifted out of the place in Patna where I had been living. The Bihar Navnirman Ashram, situated close to IIT-Patna, shall be my abode till the next assembly polls when the Jan Suraaj Party will, hopefully, make an impact.”This comes months after the poll strategist-turned-politician launched his party before the Bihar assembly polls, but failed to win a single seat.Kishor had until now been operating from ‘Sheikhpura House’, a sprawling bungalow near Patna airport owned by the family of party national president and former BJP MP Uday Singh.Singh belongs to one of the prominent families of Bihar. NK Singh is a former Rajya Sabha MP and former chairman of the 15th Finance Commission, while their late mother, Madhuri Singh, was a senior Congress leader and multiple-term MP from Purnea.PK also targeted former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar after his son was inducted into the Bihar cabinet as health minister.”The one who got elected as chief minister after the elections was unable to stop migration caused by economic distress. Instead, he chose to migrate himself, but not before ensuring that his son gets a foothold,” he said.He urged voters in Bihar to prioritise their own interests rather than vote on the basis of caste, religion, or monetary inducements.”The people of Bihar must think about the future of their own children while casting votes. They should not get swayed by leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar or Lalu Prasad, nor should they sell their votes for Rs 10,000,” he said.The remark was seen as a reference to the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana launched ahead of the assembly elections, under which over 1.5 crore women received Rs 10,000 each.PK also warned of possible economic challenges arising from the situation in West Asia, claiming that fuel prices could rise sharply and fertiliser shortages may worsen.”People may witness an increase in petrol and diesel prices by up to Rs 10 per litre. We may also face a major fertiliser crisis. NEW DELHI: Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor on Wednesday said that he had moved to an ashram on the outskirts of Patna till the next assembly polls in Bihar.While talking to reporters in Bihar’s Darbhanga, PK said, “Last night, I shifted out of the place in Patna where I had been living. The Bihar Navnirman Ashram, situated close to IIT-Patna, shall be my abode till the next assembly polls when the Jan Suraaj Party will, hopefully, make an impact.”This comes months after the poll strategist-turned-politician launched his party before the Bihar assembly polls, but failed to win a single seat.Kishor had until now been operating from ‘Sheikhpura House’, a sprawling bungalow near Patna airport owned by the family of party national president and former BJP MP Uday Singh.Singh belongs to one of the prominent families of Bihar. NK Singh is a former Rajya Sabha MP and former chairman of the 15th Finance Commission, while their late mother, Madhuri Singh, was a senior Congress leader and multiple-term MP from Purnea.PK also targeted former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar after his son was inducted into the Bihar cabinet as health minister.”The one who got elected as chief minister after the elections was unable to stop migration caused by economic distress. Instead, he chose to migrate himself, but not before ensuring that his son gets a foothold,” he said.He urged voters in Bihar to prioritise their own interests rather than vote on the basis of caste, religion, or monetary inducements.”The people of Bihar must think about the future of their own children while casting votes. They should not get swayed by leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar or Lalu Prasad, nor should they sell their votes for Rs 10,000,” he said.The remark was seen as a reference to the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana launched ahead of the assembly elections, under which over 1.5 crore women received Rs 10,000 each.PK also warned of possible economic challenges arising from the situation in West Asia, claiming that fuel prices could rise sharply and fertiliser shortages may worsen.”People may witness an increase in petrol and diesel prices by up to Rs 10 per litre. We may also face a major fertiliser crisis. NEW DELHI: US ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday hinted at a major India-US collaboration in the nuclear energy sector.Responding to a post by Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on a meeting with an executive delegation of the Nuclear Energy Institute and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum under the ‘US Nuclear Executive Mission to India’, Gor said, “Big things ahead in India-US collaboration on nuclear energy!”Earlier, Fadnavis said that significant changes are taking place in the global energy transition process. Although Maharashtra has been making substantial investments in solar and wind energy for many years, nuclear energy will become essential for carbon-free and industrial-scale baseload power supply.More than 40 per cent of India’s total foreign investment comes to Maharashtra. Nearly 60 per cent of the country’s data centre capacity is concentrated in the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai areas. Sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, logistics and advanced manufacturing are expanding rapidly in Maharashtra, which will lead to a manifold increase in electricity demand in the coming years.This comes ahead of US secretary of state Marco Rubio’s visit to India from May 23 to 26. Heatwave alert for Delhi, UP, Punjab, Haryana and more: What to expect over next 5 days (Image credit: ANI) Heatwave conditions continue to grip large parts of India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of severe temperatures across several states.In its May 20 press release, the IMD said, “Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions likely to continue to prevail over northwest & central India during the week and over East India during next 5 days.”Uttar Pradesh’s Banda records 48°CBanda district in Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest temperature in the state at 48 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, according to the Meteorological Centre in Lucknow.
