Lakhs of party workers, who have been striving for this movement from the day it was founded, are also in the same state of mind,” he wrote.He added that neither past nor ongoing incidents within the party were satisfactory and instead were “only causing concern”.Announcing his exit from the party, Semmalai told reporters, “I am much worried about the developments within the party. The party is in a fragile condition. The present situation is not comfortable for me. So, I have decided to quit the party.”Questions party’s current directionSemmalai invoked the legacy of former Tamil Nadu chief ministers M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa while questioning the current state of the party.“Is this the fate of the movement created by the Golden-Hearted revolutionary leader M G Ramachandran and protected by the Revolutionary Leader Amma J Jayalalithaa?” he wrote.The veteran leader also claimed that reports of infighting had damaged the AIADMK’s image, saying even English newspapers had mocked the party over its internal disputes.Semmalai said the party’s condition had deteriorated to the point where media reports openly ridiculed internal conflicts.‘I was blocked after Jayalalithaa’s death’Reflecting on his political career, Semmalai said both MGR and Jayalalithaa had given him opportunities and recognition in public life.“Both the revolutionary leader(MGR) and Amma (Jayalalithaa) gave me numerous opportunities and also earned me a stable recognition in politics,” he wrote.He further alleged that he was sidelined after Jayalalithaa’s death but continued to work for the party in a disciplined manner.“After the demise of revolutionary leader Amma, many opportunities were denied to me and many were blocked. Even then, I did not worry about it. Without expressing my disappointment, I remained disciplined under the party leadership and continued to work,” the letter stated.Semmalai said, “I was blocked. However, I continued to work obediently without expressing my feelings.”Ends long political associationStating that the present circumstances no longer allowed him to continue in the movement, Semmalai announced his resignation from both the party and the post he held.“My heart no longer allows me to continue my journey in this movement. My heart is deeply pained,” he wrote, adding that he was stepping down “with a heavy heart”.Semmalai served as Tamil Nadu’s health and education minister between 2001 and 2004. Most critically, these restrictions can also compromise local economies and negatively affect response operations from a security and logistics perspective,” the WHO said.However, Indian experts said there is no reason for panic as Ebola does not spread like Covid-19, though vigilance and early detection remain crucial.How big a concern is Ebola for India?The health ministry said the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is closely monitoring the situation.It added that no Ebola case has ever been reported in India except one international traveller who tested positive in 2014.Former AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria said Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected body fluids such as blood, vomit, secretions or contaminated materials, unlike Covid-19, which spread widely through respiratory droplets.“There is no need to panic,” Guleria said, explaining that Ebola requires close physical contact for transmission and is therefore far less likely to trigger a global pandemic on the scale of Covid-19.Recalling India’s preparedness during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, he said authorities had conducted screening exercises and workshops across the country. He also referred to a case involving an Indian traveller returning from Sierra Leone who was isolated in Delhi after recovering from Ebola because body fluid samples continued to test positive for viral particles.The traveller remained in isolation for nearly three months as a precaution, though no further transmission was reported.Guleria said Ebola outbreaks are often linked to infected fruit bats or wild animals and may also spread through the handling of infected bodies. He stressed that screening travellers arriving from affected regions and monitoring them during the virus’s incubation period of up to 21 days remain crucial.Experts said India has the laboratory infrastructure to rapidly detect Ebola through specialised RT-PCR testing facilities operated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the NCDC. However, they noted that early clinical suspicion and prompt reporting remain essential to containing any outbreak.“The overall risk remains low, but in today’s interconnected world, infectious outbreaks are literally just a flight away,” said Dr Neeraj Nischal, professor of medicine at AIIMS, highlighting the importance of airport surveillance, travel screening and emergency response systems.He noted that Ebola patients typically become infectious only after symptoms appear, especially fever, vomiting, diarrhoea or bleeding. Healthcare workers and caregivers face higher risks without proper protective equipment and infection-control practices.Nischal added that early Ebola symptoms often resemble other viral illnesses, making travel and exposure history critical for diagnosis. He said contact tracing remains among the most effective tools to stop transmission and added that lessons from Covid-19 — including surveillance, rapid testing and hospital preparedness — have strengthened India’s outbreak response systems.“Public cooperation, honest reporting of travel history and timely medical consultation are key to preventing outbreaks from escalating,” he said.Ebola outbreak: Signs and symptomsIn Ebola infections, the incubation period — the interval between exposure to the virus and the onset of symptoms — typically ranges from two to 21 days.The illness usually begins suddenly with symptoms such as fever, fatigue, weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat.As the disease progresses, patients may develop vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, skin rashes, and signs of kidney or liver dysfunction. NEW DELHI: V D Satheesan took oath as Kerala chief minister on Monday at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, marking the return of the Congress-led United Democratic Front to power after a decade.Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office to Satheesan and his 20-member council of ministers. Meanwhile, 14 ministers in the new cabinet are first-time ministers.Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge along with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several leaders from Congress-ruled states, attended the ceremony. Outgoing chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar were also present on stage, with Satheesan greeting leaders across party lines after taking oath.The new cabinet includes senior Congress figures such as Ramesh Chennithala, K Muraleedharan and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sunny Joseph. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has five ministers in the government, including P K Kunhalikutty, K M Shaji, P K Basheer, N Shamsudheen and V E Abdul Gafoor.Other ministers include Mons Joseph, Shibu Baby John, Anoop Jacob, C P John, A P Anilkumar, T Siddique, P C Vishnunadh, Roji M John, Bindhu Krishna, M Lijju, K A Thulasi and O J Janeesh. Congress emerged as the single-largest party with 63 seats, while the IUML won 22. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) was reduced to 35 seats, while the BJP won three constituencies.Satheesan, widely credited with leading the Congress comeback in Kerala after two successive LDF terms, emerged as the chief ministerial choice after intense internal deliberations within the Congress.
