NEW DELHI: As the World Health Organization on Sunday declared the Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), Indian health experts said there is no reason for panic as Ebola does not spread like Covid-19, though vigilance and early detection remain crucial.Health ministry officials said no Ebola case has ever been reported in India except one international traveller who was tested positive in 2014. the National Centre for Disease Control is closely monitoring the situation.Former AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria said Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected body fluids, blood, vomit, secretions or contaminated material, unlike Covid-19 which spreads through routine droplet transmission.“There is no need to panic,” Guleria said, adding that Ebola requires close physical contact for transmission and is therefore unlikely to trigger a pandemic like Covid-19.Recalling India’s preparedness during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, Guleria said authorities had conducted workshops and screening exercises across the country. He also referred to an Indian traveller returning from Sierra Leone who was isolated in Delhi after recovering from Ebola because body fluid samples tested positive for viral particles. The person remained under isolation for nearly three months as a precautionary measure, though no transmission occurred.Guleria said Ebola outbreaks are often linked to infected fruit bats or wild animals and can also spread during the handling of infected bodies. He stressed that screening travellers from affected regions and monitoring them during the incubation period of up to 21 days remain critical.Experts said India has the laboratory capacity to rapidly detect Ebola through specialised RT-PCR testing at designated centres under the Indian Council of Medical Research and NCDC, though early clinical suspicion and quick reporting remain essential.“The overall risk remains low, but in today’s interconnected world, infectious outbreaks are literally just a flight away,” Dr Neeraj Nischal, Prof of medicine at AIIMS, said, underlining the importance of airport surveillance, travel screening and emergency response systems.He said Ebola patients generally become infectious only after symptoms begin, particularly when fever, vomiting, diarrhoea or bleeding develops. Healthcare workers and caregivers are at greater risk without adequate protective equipment and infection-control practices.Nischal added that early Ebola symptoms can resemble other febrile or viral illnesses, making travel and exposure history crucial for diagnosis. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Swedish counterpart Ulf Kristersson on Sunday exhchanged special commemorative gifts to celebrate the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore.According to a statement, Kristersson gifted a two replicas of hand-written epigrams by Tagore, accompanied by a small explanatory text and a photograph of Tagore taken in 1921 during his visit to Uppsala University.”The originals, recently discovered in the Swedish National Archives, were created by Tagore during his visits to Sweden in 1921 and 1926,” the statement read.Meanwhile, PM Modi gifted Kristersson a set of collected works of Rabindranath Tagore, along with a specially handcrafted bag from Shantiniketan with motifs that Gurudev chose to empower local artisans.”The bag symbolises Tagore’s philosophy that art is not meant to be confined to galleries, but to breathe life into everyday objects, bridging the gap between the intellectual and the functional,” the statement read.Tagore, the first non-European Nobel Laureate, was unable to travel to Sweden in 1913 to receive the Nobel Prize. He was later received by King Gustav V during his visit to Sweden in 1921.The exchange of gifts also coincides with the centenary of Tagore’s historic visit to Sweden in 1926.PM Modi arrived in Sweden on Sunday for a two-day visit. NEW DELHI: Ministry of external affairs on Sunday expressed deep concern after Iranian strikes targeted the Barakah nuclear facility in the United Arab Emirates, calling the attack a “dangerous escalation” amid rising tensions in the Gulf.“India is deeply concerned at the attack targeting the Barakah nuclear facility in the UAE. Such actions are unacceptable and represent a dangerous escalation. We urgently call for restraint and a return to dialogue and diplomacy,” the ministry of external affairs said in a statement.Also read: Drone attack sparks fire at nuclear plant in UAEThe reaction came after a drone strike caused a fire at the Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi. Emirati authorities said the strike hit an electrical generator outside the plant’s inner perimeter, though there were no injuries or radiological leaks. Officials confirmed that safety systems remained intact and that all units were operating normally.The attack has intensified concerns over the fragile ceasefire between Iran, Israel and the United States, with diplomatic efforts appearing increasingly strained. The UAE accused those behind the strike of carrying out an “unprovoked terrorist attack” and warned it would not tolerate threats to its sovereignty.“These attacks constitute a dangerous escalation, an unacceptable act of aggression and a direct threat to the country’s security,” the UAE foreign ministry said.The International Atomic Energy Agency said emergency diesel generators were supplying power to one of the reactors after the strike sparked a fire near the facility. The UN nuclear watchdog urged “maximum military restraint” around nuclear sites and said it was closely monitoring developments.The UAE defence ministry said three drones had crossed into its airspace from the western border with Saudi Arabia, adding that two were intercepted before reaching their targets. Authorities have not officially blamed any country, though the UAE has previously accused Iran and allied groups of targeting energy infrastructure in the Gulf during the ongoing conflict.The billion Barakah plant, built with South Korean assistance and operational since 2020, is the Arab world’s only nuclear power station and supplies roughly a quarter of the UAE’s electricity needs.The latest strike comes as rhetoric between Tehran, Washington and Tel Aviv continues to escalate.
