No fresh Ebola case in India since 2014: Govt

World Health Organization Sunday declared the Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC)

NEW DELHI: As World Health Organization Sunday declared the Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), Indian health experts said there is no reason for panic as Ebola does not spread like Covid-19, though vigilance and early detection remain crucial.Health ministry officials said no Ebola case has ever been reported in India except one involving an international traveller who had tested positive in 2014. National Centre for Disease Control is closely monitoring the situation.Former AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria said Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected body fluids, blood, vomit, secretions or contaminated material, unlike Covid-19 which spreads through routine droplet transmission.Experts said India has the laboratory capacity to rapidly detect Ebola through specialised RT-PCR testing at designated centres, though early clinical suspicion and quick reporting remain essential.

CBSE NEW DELHI: Amid concerns among students over possible loss of marks due to the use of On-Screen Marking (OSM) for evaluating Class XII examinations, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Sunday sharply reduced the fees for obtaining answer sheets, verification and re-evaluation, even as it defended the digital evaluation system as a globally accepted and transparent method of assessment.Under the revised structure, the fee for obtaining a scanned copy of an evaluated answer sheet has been reduced from Rs 700 to Rs 100 per subject. The verification fee has been cut from Rs 500 to Rs 100, while the re-evaluation fee per question has been reduced from Rs 100 to Rs 25.The changes come after some students and teachers raised concerns over use of OSM, a digital evaluation method in which teachers assess scanned copies of answer sheets on screen. The overall Class XII pass percentage declined from 88% to 85% this year, leading to questions over whether evaluation process had affected scores.Officials said CBSE had first experimented with OSM as a pilot project in 2014, but the system was not expanded then because of limitations in scanning infrastructure, bandwidth and digital evaluation capacity across regions.According to ministry of education, CBSE implemented the system following improvements in digital infrastructure and large-scale examiner training. El Niño is a climate pattern of warming of the ocean surface in central and eastern tropical Pacific. NEW DELHI: With the shadow of El Niño looming large over India due to its potentially negative impact on monsoon, a study by a group of farm scientists from an ICAR institution shows that El Niño years in the past have reduced output of key kharif crops, such as paddy and maize, by more than 10% in 77 and 65 districts, respectively, in different states.The research, led by Subash N Pillai at the ICAR-Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research, notes that significant impact was observed on the output of the most popular kharif crop, paddy, in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, MP, Maharashtra, UP, Jharkhand and Odisha. Besides paddy and maize, yields of sorgh-um and pearl millets also declined by over 10% in 36 districts each during El Niño years.Researchers warn of over 10% crop loss in vulnerable districtsEl Niño is a climate pattern of warming of the ocean surface in central and eastern tropical Pacific. It is associated with weaker monsoon in India. The study, published in Climate Services journal by Elsevier in 2023, looked at three El Niño years — 2002, 2004 and 2009 — and may provide insights to policymakers and other stakeholders in preparing short- and long-term contingency plans to cope with the situation.“The study revealed that El Niño years cause significant spatial and temporal variability in Indian summer monsoon rainfall, leading to substantial reductions in the productivity of major kharif crops such as rice, maize, pearl millet and sorghum across several districts of India. Representational Image (Image credit: AP) NEW DELHI: To accelerate adoption of renewable energy among low-income and vulnerable households, govt has approved installation of over 13 lakh rooftop solar systems under the utility-led aggregation (ULA) model across 10 states/Union territories (UTs).The push is part of Centre’s broader focus on expanding solar energy capacity as a cleaner and greener alternative to fossil fuel-based power generation.Officials said Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana and Union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu have already commenced installations, while Bihar, Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir, Tripura, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Delhi have sent proposals to Centre.Ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) has set a target of installing one crore rooftop solar systems across the country by March 2027 under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, of which 30 lakh will be set up under ULA model.Under PM Surya Ghar scheme, more than 60% of rooftop installations are in 3-4 kW category, highlighting lower participation from poorer households with less electricity demand.
