Youth jumps into ‘Badi Deg’ at Ajmer Sharif Dargah, beaten up by crowd NEW DELHI: A youth allegedly jumped into the giant cauldron, known as the ‘Badi Deg’, inside the premises of the Ajmer Sharif Dargah on Sunday, prompting intervention by shrine staff and an investigation by authorities.According to eyewitnesses, the youth suddenly ran towards the large cauldron while attendants and staff members tried to stop him. However, he managed to jump into the ‘Deg’ before being restrained.The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed within the Dargah complex.Sources quoted by news agency ANI said cash offerings and jewellery were present inside the cauldron at the time of the incident.Following the episode, Dargah committee employees entered the cauldron area and pulled the youth out after considerable effort. UP Cabinet expansion: Bhupendra Chaudhary, Manoj Pandey sworn in as ministers in Yogi’s govt The Uttar Pradesh government, led by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, on Sunday expanded its cabinet ahead of the 2027 assembly elections, inducting several new ministers and strengthening its administrative team at Jan Bhavan in Lucknow. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, earlier in the day, reacted to the development on X, questioning the selection process and criticising the political implications of the cabinet expansion. He raised concerns over the limited number of vacancies and the inclusion of leaders who recently switched parties, while also targeting the BJP over governance issues. Taking aim at the BJP’s decision-making, he wrote, “There are only 6 vacancies in the UP cabinet, yet more people have switched over from other parties than that–will all of them be honored with ministerial positions?” He further questioned the selection criteria within the ruling party, asking, “Will the weakest among them be selected, so that their weakness is somewhat mitigated?” and also raised concerns over representation, stating, “If just one is chosen from among several MLAs of a community, what will be the basis for the selection?” Extending his criticism, Akhilesh Yadav questioned the future of leaders who recently switched to the BJP but may not find space in the cabinet. He asked, “What will happen to those party-switchers? Will their neglect and humiliation be pacified with some give-and-take?” and added, “Won’t the rest of those left out feel utterly cheated?” He also targeted internal party dynamics, referring to long-pending aspirations within the BJP ranks, asking what would happen to those who have “waited for years” to become ministers but may now be sidelined due to the induction of new entrants. The performers were rewarded with boxes of the fruit as India pushes campaign to promote mango exports overseas.The “Threads of Indian Tradition” festival, held at the Nee Soon public housing estate in north-east Singapore, had singers, dancers and musicians who took part in the event felicitated with cartons of mangoes instead of conventional souvenirs or trophies.The initiative was organised by the High Commission of India in Singapore and marked the second mango promotion festival hosted this month. An earlier event held between May 1 and 3 at another housing estate on Singapore’s east coast attracted more than 6,000 visitors, who sampled 10 varieties of Indian mangoes.“Our endeavour has been to introduce a diverse range of globally renowned Indian mangoes to our Singaporean friends,” Indian High Commissioner Shilpak Ambule said on Sunday, as quoted by PTI.He added that the response to the events had been enthusiastic and more such festivals were planned during the mango season. “We are not just showcasing Indian mangoes, but giving a glimpse of Incredible India to our Singaporean friends, with the hope of bringing them even closer to India,” he said.Around 60 performers participated in the latest festival, which drew over 650 residents from the Nee Soon neighbourhood, according to organiser Sithara Doriasamy. The event was also attended by Singapore MP Lee Hui Ying.Local musician Thanesh, who performed with a band at the festival, said receiving mangoes as a token of appreciation was a first for him. “I have performed at dozens of events but it is the first time that I have been felicitated with a carton of mangoes, my favorite fruit,” he said.Long-time Singapore resident and community volunteer Tanuja Mohindru said the unusual reward had generated curiosity and demand for Indian mangoes even among non-Indians.India, the world’s largest mango producer, has been ramping up efforts to promote exports of premium varieties such as Alphonso and Kesar in overseas markets including the UAE, the US and the UK. BENGALURU: A major security alert was triggered hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Art of Living on Sunday. According to the police, two gelatin sticks were found about 25 feet away from the main road near Vaderahalli Gate.A police constable deployed on special duty found the gelatin sticks, following which the anti-sabotage team immediately seized them. A special team has been formed to investigate the matter.Meanwhile, a person identified as Lohit, 40, a resident of Koramangala who had made a hoax threat call around 7.30 am ahead of Modi’s visit informing they are carrying out blasts in HAL airport and in Art of Living, has been detained on suspicion and is currently being interrogated. However, police believe Lohit has no role in the gelatin sticks case. Lohit is further being interrogated. It is learned that Lohit has a history of making hoax calls during Modi’s visits to the city and is allegedly mentally disturbed. The discovery immediately triggered panic among security agencies, raising serious concerns over the safety arrangements during the high-profile visit.Deputy Inspector General of Police (Central Range), S. Girish, said special teams have been formed to investigate the explosives found along the convoy route. He appreciated the alertness of the constable who found the sticks and alerted the anti-sabotage team. “We are investigating who threw the gelatin sticks on the roadside,” he said.Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru South District, R. Srinivas Gowda, said the sticks were found nearly a kilometre away from the NICE Road junction. “A constable, during area domination duty, found a packet around 20–25 feet away from the road near a compound. The packet contained two gelatin sticks. We need to investigate further to ascertain more details,” he said. He added that they do not yet have complete information about the man who made the threat call to Bengaluru City Police.Police are yet to determine whether the gelatin sticks were deliberately placed or what the motive behind the incident could have been. M Veerapandiyan and Vijay NEW DELHI: CPI state secretary M Veerapandiyan on Sunday said that the ‘Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu’ (state song of Tamil Nadu) must be accorded the foremost place in the protocol of government ceremonies.In a letter issued after the swearing-in ceremony of Tamil Nadu chief minister Vijay, Veerapandiyan objected to the order in which songs were played during the event. The ceremony began with national song ‘Vande Mataram’, followed by the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’, while the ‘Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu’ was played third.The CPI leader said the order violated long-standing convention in Tamil Nadu, where official functions traditionally begin with the ‘Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu’ and conclude with the national anthem.”As per instructions issued by the Raj Bhavan, giving precedence to the song ‘Vande Mataram’ and placing Tamil in the third position in the programme schedule of the swearing-in ceremony organised by the Tamil Nadu government amounts to a violation of established convention. The Tamil Nadu government must explain to the public who was responsible for this lapse. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam must ensure that the Thamizhthai Vaazhthu is accorded primacy. Such an error must not be allowed to continue.
