NEW DELHI: TVK chief C Joseph Vijay on Sunday was sworn in as Tamil Nadu chief minister after the May 4 verdict declared his party as the single largest in the assembly. His oath-taking came after days of struggle in proving a majority to governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.He took oath at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.The governor directed actor-politician Vijay to seek the vote of confidence in the assembly on or before May 13.Vijay’s TVK stormed the elections in Tamil Nadu, unseating the veteran traditional forces of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a 50-year-old duopoly, while Vijay, a 51-year-old, completely overpowered and outshined the veterans.Vijay has succeeded MK Stalin as the Tamil Nadu chief minister.Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League extended unconditional support to TVK on Saturday, helping Vijay reach the required majority mark of 120 in the 234-member Assembly. Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) had already backed TVK, taking its tally from 107 to 116 by Friday night. You embraced me with love and gave me a great place in the cinema.”Speaking at length about the financial strain inherited by his government, Vijay said, “When crores of people stand with me, I have the confidence and belief in my heart that together we can face anything, no matter what comes our way. Today, the condition in which our Tamil Nadu government has been left is something I have seen for myself. The last government has gone out after borrowing debts of more than Rs 10 lakh crore. The treasury had been completely emptied before they left office. It is in such a situation that we have taken charge.”The actor turned politician announced immediate action against drug abuse.“From today onward, I will begin taking strong measures to control drug abuse. It is our duty to save our youngsters from it. Likewise, I will ensure law and order and guarantee safety for everyone. Even if some people humiliate me, whether they are friends or enemies, all 8 crore people are still my people. My heart tells me that I must give complete attention to education, roads, drinking water facilities, and other essential services. I want my government to be a transparent government. That is the very first thing I want to do. I request all of you to give me some time. I will gradually fulfil everything I have promised and will sincerely strive to implement them. This is your government. I will ensure strict safety for women,” said Vijay.The TVK chief also reiterated his stand against corruption, saying, “I promise the people of Tamil Nadu that I will never misuse even a single rupee of public money. I have not entered politics for wealth, and all of you know that very well. I will never allow corruption or permit anyone to make money through corrupt practices. This government will belong to the people, and together we will build a stronger and better Tamil Nadu.”Soon after taking oath, Vijay signed his first set of official documents, including orders for 200 units of free power supply, the formation of a special task force to tackle drugs, and another special task force to ensure women’s safety.During his address, Vijay also thanked leaders from allied parties, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Selvaperunthagai, Praveen Chakravarthy, P Shanmugam, Su Venkatesan, Thol Thirumavalavan, Ravikumar, Vanniarasu and M Veerapandian. NEW DELHI: After taking oath as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, TVK chief Vijay signed his first set of official documents, ordering 200 units of free power supply and setting up a task force to tackle drugs and ensure women’s safety.Addressing the crowd, Vijay said he would not deceive people with false promises.“This is a new beginning. A new era of real, secular social justice starts now,” he said.In his first address, Vijay said he did not come from any royal lineage, but people welcomed and accepted him.He urged people to give him reasonable time to deliver on his promises.Vijay also accused the previous DMK regime of burdening the state with Rs 10 lakh crore debt. He said he was considering releasing a white paper on state finances to ensure transparency going forward.Earlier in the day, the oath of office was administered by Tamil Nadu governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Vijay’s parents, actor Trisha Krishnan and several others were present at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the ceremony.Apart from Vijay, nine other TVK leaders — N Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, K A Sengottaiyan, K G Arunraj, P Venkataramanan, R Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, T K Prabhu and S Keerthana — also took oath as ministers in his maiden cabinet.Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Vijay welcomed Governor Arlekar to the venue and introduced him to the ministers-designate.The 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly election entered the history books after the state delivered an unprecedented mandate to Vijay. TVK won 108 of the 234 seats in its maiden electoral outing. NEW DELHI: After taking oath as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, TVK chief Vijay signed his first set of official documents, ordering 200 units of free power supply and setting up a task force to tackle drugs and ensure women’s safety.Addressing the crowd, Vijay said he would not deceive people with false promises.“This is a new beginning. A new era of real, secular social justice starts now,” he said.In his first address, Vijay said he did not come from any royal lineage, but people welcomed and accepted him.He urged people to give him reasonable time to deliver on his promises.Vijay also accused the previous DMK regime of burdening the state with Rs 10 lakh crore debt. He said he was considering releasing a white paper on state finances to ensure transparency going forward.Earlier in the day, the oath of office was administered by Tamil Nadu governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Vijay’s parents, actor Trisha Krishnan and several others were present at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the ceremony.Apart from Vijay, nine other TVK leaders — N Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, K A Sengottaiyan, K G Arunraj, P Venkataramanan, R Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, T K Prabhu and S Keerthana — also took oath as ministers in his maiden cabinet.Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Vijay welcomed Governor Arlekar to the venue and introduced him to the ministers-designate.The 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly election entered the history books after the state delivered an unprecedented mandate to Vijay. TVK won 108 of the 234 seats in its maiden electoral outing.
