NEW DELHI: Outgoing Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said the Left Democratic Front’s defeat in the Kerala assembly elections came as a “complete surprise”, while asserting that the alliance would function as a responsible opposition and continue to push for social welfare measures in the state.Vijayan, in a first statement after defeat, said the verdict was unexpected for the LDF, which had been seeking a third consecutive term in office.”The defeat in the assembly polls came as a complete surprise to us,” the CPM veteran said, according to news agency PTI.The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) swept to power in Kerala, ending the decade-long rule of the LDF government headed by Vijayan.Even as he acknowledged the setback, Vijayan said the Left alliance would play the role of a constructive opposition and would continue to raise issues concerning welfare and public interest.“The LDF will act as a responsible opposition and pressure the government to implement social welfare measures,” he said.Vijayan also described the BJP winning three seats in the Kerala assembly elections as a “serious” development, indicating concern within the Left camp over the saffron party’s growing footprint in a state where it has historically struggled to gain electoral traction.The BJP’s performance marks one of its best-ever showings in Kerala assembly elections. – The deaths of four members of a family in south Mumbai last month were caused by zinc phosphide, a chemical commonly used in rat poison, and not by consumption of watermelon as initially suspected, PTI reported on Thursday, citing officials. The chemical was reportedly detected in the viscera samples of all four.The case came to light in April after the muslim family, comprising a husband, wife and their two daughters — died following suspected food poisoning.Earlier, deputy commissioner of police (Zone 1) Pravin Munde had said the investigation into the deaths was under way and that food and body samples had been collected for examination following the post-mortem.In a self-recorded video statement issued last month, Munde said the family had hosted relatives for a meal at their residence on April 25.“A report of unnatural death has been reported at JJ Marg Police Station. Four members of a Muslim family – husband, wife and their two daughters – died. On 25th April, they had invited a few relatives to their home and had a meal with them. Around 10-10.30 pm, after the meal, the relative left,” he said.“The family consumed watermelon around 1-1.30 am at night. Around 5-6 am, they started complaining of vomiting and loose motions. They were rushed to a nearby hospital and yesterday, all four of them died,” Munde added.He had also said that a post-mortem was conducted and samples were collected as part of the investigation.“A postmortem was done, and food samples and samples from their body were also taken. Further investigation continued,” he had said.Earlier on Wednesday, officials said post-mortem examinations had been conducted and the viscera of the deceased preserved for chemical analysis, adding that as part of the investigation, the microbiology department of JJ Hospital submitted a preliminary report to the police stating that no bacterial infection had been detected in the victims.“As per the report, no bacterial infection has been detected so far in the bodies of the victims. However, the report also identified Canada-based Khalistani extremism as a major national security concern.The report stated that some Canada-Based Khalistani Extremists (CBKEs) were using Canadian institutions to promote extremist agendas and raise funds allegedly diverted towards violent activities. It further said Sikh extremist elements use Canada as a base to “promote, fundraise or plan violence primarily in India”.Compared to the agency’s 2024 assessment, the latest report adopted a more restrained tone on India. NEW DELHI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is reportedly in talks with a section of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) MLAs over a possible power-sharing arrangement as the political battle over government formation in Tamil Nadu intensified on Thursday. The development comes as 28 AIADMK legislators were shifted to a private resort in Puducherry.The legislators staying at the resort in Poorankuppam are supporters of senior AIADMK leader CV Shanmugam. Their relocation has fuelled speculation that sections within the AIADMK may be considering extending support to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay in the ongoing government formation exercise, ANI reported citing sources.Follow live updates on Tamil NaduThey claimed that a possible power-sharing formula is also being discussed, under which CV Shanmugam could be offered the Deputy Chief Minister’s post along with key ministerial portfolios. Former Tamil Nadu minister and TVK candidate KA Sengottaiyan are reportedly involved in the talks.However, the AIADMK leadership itself appears divided over the issue. Party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has not agreed to the proposal of supporting TVK, triggering differences within sections of the party.At the same time, leaders including CV Shanmugam and OS Manian are believed to be in favour of supporting TVK in exchange for major positions in a possible coalition government. Sources, cited by ANI, also indicated that some senior leaders have advised TVK to explore legal options, including approaching the Supreme Court or the high court over the government formation process. Others are said to have suggested the possibility of fresh elections if the deadlock continues.TVK, despite emerging as a major force in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, remains short of the majority mark by 5 MLAs.
